  • Were those (or kendo) real fight movements used by soldiers of the time,or exclusive to the sport?

  • Naginata was a military arts for daughters of the samurai class

  • I don't know much but red seemed as whole different level then white white did strikes but none where successfully implemented while red stayed calm and waited for openings deflecting all her strikes

  • Kendo point system is: Head (top), throat, left and right torso and left and right underarm.

Naginata has also the legs below the knees.

  • AHAHAHA kiai! sounds like a pokemon sound :}

  • Naginata is a superior weapon in my opinion. Most battlefield weapons have always been unusually large and two handed. Often wielded from horseback. The reason you wont see too many samurais carrying it outside the battlefield is because of the inconvenience of drawing such a weapon in a casual setting. Imagine a world where there was open carry for blades. A katana would be a more comfortable blade to bring to the workplace rather than a naginata.

  • can you score with the blunt side? or is it just for blocking?

  • Yea, Naginata is a women's weapon. Some people declare its because its the weapon men often leave at home and not take with them to the battlefield. I suspect its because it offers more reach for the women so that it can give women a slight advantage over men who relied on swords. My humble opinion.

  • @Lordofthenipplerings Actually during the senkoku jidai the yumi, yari, teppo and naginata were the primary weapons of samurai and ashigaru alike. in ages before, mounted archery was the way to go. So the naginata is most definitely not a woman's weapon and the katana was normally not used as a primary weapon but to be used when your spear or naginata broke or in close quarters when spears became impractical

  • @Insomnium2188 Its a woman's weapon. "The naginata has become associated in modern Japan as a woman's weapon as it is studied by women more than men"

It wasnt always a woman's weapon. Its a better weapon than a katana in most cases except for ease of use and carry. But for whatever reason. The naginata is now mostly trained by women, while katanas are mostly trained men.

  • @Lordofthenipplerings accept in Europe and Australia.... The naginata being a woman's weapon is very relative and it pretty much all depends on the martial arts demographics of a region. it isn't based on any kind of historical accuracy. but w/e its a trivial matter anyway :)

  • @Insomnium2188 Its not a very important issue. In its country of origin, the weapon evolved towards the perception of being a woman's weapon. Doesnt make the weapon inferior. Its actually a much more powerful weapon than a katana. However, thats how the weapon is perceived today in Japan.

  • I'd hit that... with a Naginata.

  • Traditionally women were only allowed to train with spears, such as the yari and naginata, as well as daggers. Don't know where I was going with that but it never hurts to know such things.

  • Lot of leg strikes but looking at the flags no points for them?

  • Zombies don't exist.

  • who won exactly? O_o

  • omg just stab allredy

  • That strike at 4:21 was awesome! I must have jumped back and rewatched it a dozen times.

  • A naginata is a shock weapon. Zombies have no sense of self preservation so the weapon won't fair well. It is also too heavy and too broad.

  • @Dinyang I disagree. The only way to kill a zombie is to destroy the brain or sever the head, correct? With the weight and the power that can be applied with a two handed weapon, the force needed to penetrate a human skull or sever a human neck is available in the naginata. Since zombies wouldn't have any sense of self preservation, they wouldn't move out of the way or try to block.

The range of the weapon allows for more safety. It may not be good in extreme close quarters, though.

  • @Riddley0848

/the naginata REQUIRES an opponent that values his/her life. The swing style is supposed to make your opponent back up(hence the circling). It will kill zombies but it’s far from the ideal weapon,

  • @Dinyang Didn't notice I got a reply xD. Look, a weapon is a weapon. Just because it is meant to be used one way against certain things doesn't mean it can't be used a different way against something else. Are you saying that a naginata can't be used for powerful strikes? Like a hard horizontal slash, an untrained fighter using a naginata isn't go to try to scare a zombie.Likely decapitation will be the goal. Even a trained fighter would do the same. Your statement about requirements is invalid.

  • @Riddley0848

Required for effective use. In the history of zombie lore have you ever seen someone killing a zombie with a polearm?

If you still disagree with the Naginata combat style there's other issues. The Nagantia has a hack and wait combat pattern, it's has an equal centre of gravity making slashes fast but adding extensive cooldown/lag times. Like the No-Dachi Sword the Nagantia was never meant to be a close proximity or duel weapon (seldom used by infantry).

    Fight Z and you'll die.

  • @Dinyang You're right. The Naginata has it's weaknesses. However, there is only one way to prove how effective it would be against zombies. :P and that is to actually use it against a zombie. I don't see that happening though. I'll concede, though, you have won this little dispute :D. Good luck, Dinyang.

  • Oliver how would I order a copy of all your videos regarding naginata?

  • Hm, that was a pretty disappointing show; I was honestly expecting MUCH more dynamic movement in foot speed and in their attacks. Naginata/Kendo definitely looks less interesting than I had previously thought *sighs*.

  • So does hitting the other person in the feet count?

  • Sorry, I meant to add thanks for sharing!

  • A pleasure to watch! I would love to learn more about this tradition.

  • @theevilninjadude It's my understanding that to kill a zombie you have to get at the brain. So you need something that can pierce the skull. Aside from firearms, I think a war hammer would be good. Once of those cold steel war hammers would work wonders on a zombie skull :D

  • too bad this isnt a death match, that would be fun

  • really good fight

  • I wonder if anyone has ever gotten severly drunk, blacked out, and came to in the semi-finals of the world naginata championship? That'd be random. Just some regular smuck that unconsciously accessed very specific high level martial skills in the throes of inebriation one day.

  • I wonder if anyone has ever gotten severly drunk, blacked out, and came to in the semi-finals of the world naginata championship? That'd be random. Just some regular smuck that unconsciously accessed very specific high level martial skills in the throes of inebriation one day.

  • I'm unfamiliar with the naginatajutsu, so it was difficult for me to tell....was the more defensive woman or the more aggressive woman announced the champion?

I wish I had a better method of identifying them... I just noticed that one was more cautious and about drawing her opponent out whereas the other was more about intimidating and catching her opponent by surprise.

  • @RocktheSocks Depends on how you define aggressive. The one who started on the left, the smaller of the two, was a lot more active, but she didn't go for big attacks. She lost. The one on the right was a lot more passive, but when she went for points, she did so with really dramatic movements. Very impressive technique. She won.

  • OMG they are impressive O.O

  • Are there different stances in naginata like kendo? =0

  • Does anyone have any experience with the sport? Is it fun?

  • @Bookstop1337 it looks fun though

  • hadn't realized how much I miss Naginata... after Arizona I'll have to find a dojo where I can resume training.

  • lol i am learning naginata! had first lesson yesterday!

  • why are people talking about zombies here?

  • i can't wait to go to japan to study naginata!!!! ^^

  • can someone explain to me how the point system works?

  • @TommyBShow Same as Kendo's So how is Kendo's right ? So I will get you there : Same as Kendo's So how is Kendo's right ? So I will get you there : Go to Wikipedia there is a kendo section, and a competition area. For some reason I cannot directly post the link to it. There is a 2 competition section have a look :) I hope that will answer your questions There is a 2 competition section have a look :) I hope that will answer your questions
  • @TommyBShow

there are 4 points of contact on your opponents body they are:

    1) (men) the left or right or middle of the head

2)(kOTE) the left or right wrists

3)(Doo) the left or right lower stomach

4 (??) the ankle, I'm not sure what ankle is in japanese.

depending on how you his those areas will determine from 1-2 which points you get. At the end of the round who'm ever has the most points wins.

  • @iwatcher69 The 4 is the Sune, I believe.

  • @TommyBShow

If its anything like Kumdo/Kendo, its more than just getting a "touch". Both warriors are armored, You have to hit a point with enough power and focus to be awarded a point.

  • But isn't the naginata pretty much only used by women now? I mean, it was what they used in olden days to protect themselves if need be, especially if they were the daughter or wife of a samurai. I'm not sure about current times, though.

  • @Satochan123 ya I'm thinking of studying it but my cousins like "oh its a womans art" and its like well maybe back then, like saying only men should be in the army, that would piss people off if you said that

  • what are the rules cause i kno ive seen hits that would be a point in fencing and most likely kendo but nobody call them

  • I dont get the rules with this one.. looks like its taking a while to score a point

  • Wow, quick reflexes they both have. I'm really interested in this now.

  • Intressting with ningata. I'm myself a girl kendoka from Sweden, that's really dominated by men (at least in Sweden). So it was fun to see a budomartial art that many women are training. Are there any bigger diffrences between rules (How you get the points etc) of Kendo and Ningata? :)

  • @XxRosaPanternxX Well no difference, just another zone to hit (leg), otherwise it is pretty similar. If you practice Kendo, then you can try Naginata :) and even have a match Vs a naginata.

  • @XxRosaPanternxX sure try naginata its cool, as a kendoka you shouldnt have many difficulties the naginata is bassicly a long stick with a sword attached , however if you are a beginner i wouldnt recommend a match against a naginata wielder it could be dangerous so watch out,ok? :)

  • is it slashing AND thrusting? or just slashing?

  • Excellent competition, very fast reactions and great moves

  • I might be able to beat them in a duel. They were using the naginata as more of a spear rather than a bladed staff. Neither were very aggressive. A persistant and controlled attack would force them into being defensive and they would have to react, meaning they would have no control of the fight and would be more prone to mistakes.

Unless there is a rule against being too agressive.

  • I'm just wondering, but are weapons contests limited to two contestants using the same weapons? Fencing using epee/foil, Kendo using bokken/shinai, or here with the naginata all have their own circuits, but does anyone know about mixed contests?

  • Well there are several type of competition in Naginata and Kendo, and one of them is a team VS team where you can mix Kendo and Naginata.

To my knowledge there are no 100% Kendo VS naginata competition as individuals.

The other way to have mixed fight is to visit other style Dojo and have "friendly" match.

  • Why does it seem as hardly anything scores?

  • It's only so in this battle. Both Ogata and Sato are so experienced, that they forecast each others movements. The only chance for them to score is if their opponent will make a mistake.

But if you look closely you'll see a couple of "almost" hits. For example in 4:15.

Since neither of them were able to score in this fight, the final decision was left for the referees in the end.

If you search other battles in youtube you would see more fluid scoring.

  • I wish that just once I could see a fight with a real Naginatas....Living in the 21st century sucks.

15th-18th centuries were so much better.

Anyone know where I can find a time machine?

  • @justinhammerly I feel your pain... I feel like I was born in the wrong century when watching these videos...

  • @Gemm6905 I couldn't agree with you more.

  • @Gemm6905 I don't. We now do these things to improve our lifes and ourselves. In the old days, doing something like this usually meant that you were going to kill someone with it.

  • @k0ns0l3 Fine by me. At least then my life wouldn't be as boring as it is now.

  • can Naginata be practised with Kendo (i.e. with Shinai)??? Thanks

  • Not really, the equipment is similiar but atarashii naginata has the shinguards and of course the bamboo naginata.

  • @morbidSoulfly Well it depends what you mean by practiced.

You can fight with them, there are some kata also.

Kendo Vs Naginata is pretty interesting.

What happen is usually you lend to your kendoka opponent your "leg guard" so you can use it against him :)

  • @olivierJT

yeah, I meant along the lines of a fight, with one person using Naginata, and the other a Shinai. Thanks for the reply man

  • Yes NW. I have participated in Kendo tournaments for 8 years. Many practitioners have horrid footwork and movement. My sensai taught me kenjutsu iaijutsu and kendo. So my movements are fluidic to move as one. He taught me to cut in every motion with total restraint and control. I was always praised for my technique however in tournaments, points matter and sloppy movement is accepted. More like slapping the shinai then slicing. I truly hate how watered down these great arts have become.

  • Thats what bayonets are for.

  • Interesting that you mention that, NW - i've actually heard that exact same statement made about Kendo from a person who switched from Kendo to Kenjutsu.

I guess it's all about where you want to draw your boundaries...

  • The winner is quite hot..... though i didnt expect for them to stop alot, i thought they gonna hit each other like crazy.....

  • @Sa3L0v3 Its not really dangerous the Naginata is neither heavy nor sharp. Maybe it hurts a bit when u get hit on wrong spots but that happens in other types of sport too.

  • their kiai's are adorable

  • Have you even gotten hit on the head with a wooden pole? Can you spell 'concussion'? It's a sport, not people trying to kill eachother.

  • @SkinnyKitchen

Yeah.. Next! Get the fuck out.

This is a competition, they are not holding hit. Even flexible weapon will cause sever injury if helmet arent wear.

  • Is it just me or is there something wrong with Naginata if a fight like this is simply decided via hantei?

When you get to a certain level, there is almost no fight with a single hit before even one encho. It's ludicrous. Either the scoring system is off or the fights are too defensive/safe or everyone just knows each other too well. I find it a shame to not have them go until someone makes a 'fatal' mistake.

  • did you watch the whole thing? near the end there were some great strikes. I agree for the mostpart, amateur fighters are much more entertaining, but this was still a great fight.

  • I guess I didn't make my statement clear enough.

This IS a great fight. I'm just complaining that I can't see it play out till the end, and wondering if Naginata is just further from the "one strike, one hit" atttitude than Kendo.... and I don't find amateur fights more entertaining. I can't hold my blood watching stuff like this. 0_o

  • So are those women left or right handed? I'm confused as to how you hold the weapon depending on the dominant hand.

  • Oh well, it is like Kendo, there is no dominant hand.

These are just different "guard positions" not related if you are a lefty or a righty.

Kendo is the same (you never switch hands)

  • Just like Olivier said, there is no dominant hand. In Kendo (and all other japanese sword arts) everyone hold the sword in the same way. In Naginata you have all the Kamae (positions) trained on both sides. A good naginata ka can strike with precision and good kihon from any stance

  • i thought 0:54 had been a point .. what happen ???

  • The strike didn't touch the Men's datotsu bui.

Akiko Sato (white) has moved her head to the left just before the strike

  • why are they using metal blade ends? most sparring matches Ive seen have been with wooden ends

  • They are not :) These are in bamboo, that is for sure.

Otherwise there will be more "red" around...

  • oh, ok, the way that the vid is, it makes it look like they are using blunt metal ends

  • its Bamboo all throughout ... none of it is made of metal or u will hear a clanging sound

  • Cool fight. But i dont know why in the hantei they chose red, i mean she was patience, but white tried harder n i think there were one or two ippon for her.

  • reminds me of kendo a little xD

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice! I'm looking to join a naginata-dojo soon and hope to become as good as those sometime :)

Btw, can anyone tell me how high the costs are for equipment (estimated)? :)

  • It should be between 500 USD to Infinite.

But when you'' begin the first year (usually) you won't need to buy the armor itself.

First the naginata, then the hakama and keikogi (the "outfit"), then when ready the armor.

So for the start it is not to much an investment. Look online i am sure you can fing what you wanna know :)

  • Thank you ^^ well, it's an investment, right? So I guess I'm going to have to save some money starting now just to buy my equipment ^^

And I read we start out using bamboo, so buying the naginata itself will be in a later stadium than that, right?

  • Oh well when I mean Naginata i mean the equivalent of Shinai (Bamboo blade for kendo) The naginata used in "fighting" has the tip (the "blade" in Bamboo. The other one is in full wood (for Kata practice) Equivalent to Kendo Boken. You don't need to buy a "Real naginata" :P

  • the white is very aggressive xD and the red's defense is on a whole new level

  • Now THAT's a sweet game of hockey ^_^

  • I amo soooo not looking forward to my first match with a naginataka :) // Kendoka

  • The block on 3:03 is surreal.

  • Yeah, no kidding. Ogata's mawai is ridiculous. I hope to someday be half as good.

  • The goal is to strike one of 5 points on the armor, kote, men, do, tsune, and tsuki.

  • Im a bit confused. What is the goal of this match? Just to get a head blow?

  • To add To what HadesOmega said, you have to strike but with certain requirement.

It is not a touch or a contact, it has to be with "will" and other things (ki ken tai...)

  • and have a shotgun and a sniper ... i win guns own swords

  • reminds me of that crapy phillipine guy at james bond ..

  • fckin insane, i ould hate to trade steps with those women...

  • 4:22, holy shit

  • If there were a zombie outbreak, this is the weapon I would want on me

  • What...lol!

  • Think about it: it's a sharp blade on the end of a long pole, which gives you plenty of leverage. I don't have strong arms, so I can use all of the extra force I can get. Also, the long pole keeps your hands away from getting bitten.

  • you need to get out more often

  • WoW cool! :) !

  • did you intentionally capitalize that second W, or was it just force of habit? =P

  • I'm a kendoka and I have a quick question

You roll up your keikogi and hakama, I noticed. Is there a functional reason for this? or is it just a custom?

  • Well regarding the hakama it is because there is a piece of armor on both leg. So the hakama needs to be under them.

Regarding the arms, if I am correct it is not regular white keikogi. It is lighter material, but i am not sure. The arms are anyway shorter.

  • this is awsom. they should make it an olimpic sport.

  • I actually disagree. If it goes to the olympics, I think we'll have a shifting of styles like what happened in kendo, and people will abandon good form for a point getting style.

  • that's a good point. hopefully it would divided into two, one sport like stialised compeditive vershon for the olippics and other events and one more pratical and realistic one for sell difence and people who want to learn how to actualy fight

  • *cough cough* grammar mistakes...

Actually kendo was and must always be for self-improvement, it has its own World Cups and thats good enough ..

  • damn that so cool

  • How does scoring work? It seemed as if the smaller one was hitting the other one a lot in the beginning.

  • There are three judges per match. First person to two points wins; the time limit is three minutes with a 2-minute "overtime"/"sudden death" mode. Points are awarded when the correct target is struck with good form and spirit (which includes calling the intended target). Hitting lots won't count if you're too deep, too high/low, missing the target, have bad form, forget to call...etc. It's hard work!

  • Basicly you need to hit your target, scream the name of the bodypart you intend to hit and to be able to keep fighting and not leting your gard down after the hit. There are only a few valid places to hit. you cant get a pont if the other compeditors naginata is touching you and so on.

And it has to look good.

  • Wow my first time seeing this type of sport. very intense. I dont know the rules i am not so sure who won either but i can tell that the girl who is really aggressive is really careless. LOL

  • do just women compete in the sport?

  • Men and women.

But in competition they spare in separate categories.

In the Dojo (training/learning area) Man Vs Woman is no problem.

    Naginata originaly was for women.

  • yeah, i herd it was mostly for woman. why is that? i'm just curius. but wasn't the naginata used mostly by men in fudal times . i think woman used wakazshi, didn't thay.

  • No, the short sword was a secondary weapon.

The reason the naginata was used primarily by women is because it offsets their natural disadvantages in a melee: that of reach and strength. You can strike very hard by leveraging the long pole.

Of course, that also means that a man with a naginata or similar polearm would generate a lot of force. Upper body strength was always an important factor, which is why women usually don't fight.

  • I hope someday to be that impressive not that i will ever get to participate in a match but I would at least like to look that smooth and dedicated. Please tell me if I am wrong but the red girl blocked a lot of devastating blow and landed with more accuracy and control then the more impressive and aggressive white girl and that is why she won right?

  • i personally believe bo staff is better but this is still awesome

    5*

  • Thanks for uploading this. I practiced Naginata at my college along with Kendo, and intend to continue to do so. I haven't seen a Naginata battle before. So thanks!

  • Why don't you try getting in bogu? You'll find that its much harder than it looks.

  • do you play Naginata?

  • I don't but, I practice Kendo. Naginata, I would like to give it a try someday, but there is a Dojo Issue in Paris ( not compatible hours )

  • i practice kendo too :p (since a few weeks o_O)this looks great too!

    thanx for uploading this vid

  • i practice kendo also... i want to try fighting against naginata and kusarigama... i tried nitoryu... i forgot what it is like T.T

  • Merci pour ces videos.

    J'avais loupe l'evenement, j'ai pu me rattraper grace a toi :)

  • De rien ^^

  • Merci, beaucoup pour les vidéos! X) Je suis tellement contenteeeeeeeeee! Pour une fois que quelqu'un se donne la peine de bien filmer!

  • This is naginatado

  • Kendoka1, you are sooo nice ^^ you replied to a guy who cannot even read a tile^^ hehe

  • Hahahahahaha...suddenly i started thinking of hockey...xD figure out why?

What is the name of this? I mean...this is certainly not kendo or am i wrong?

  • I can't understand that decision?! I realy felt the other player was much more active and agressive, as well as getting more "close" ippons. Red did have one realy nice "allmost" ippon. But why give her the dicision for hantei?

  • I was very surprised that Sato lost. So much more dynamic and seemed to be in control the entire match.

  • What did it go to Hantei?

  • Hantei, yes it did, no Ippon.

  • Sato should've won

  • You commented ages ago, I realize, but based on this match alone, what makes you say that?

  • super merci !! :-)

  • Oh yes THE Australian ^^,I ll see what I can do ^^

ok je vais changer les options de "partage"

  • Great video.... can you please show footage of any matches involving the Australian team? (which consisted of only 1 person ;)

  • Well, actualy 2. Ross C. and Simon L. (I don't remember who was there-both or just one)

New Zealand was just one ^^ (Alex B.)

I have the whole list and everything if you need info btw ^^

  • Only Simon L. turned up... so anything you may have with him in it would be greatly appreciated

  • dommage qu'on ne puisse pas linker la vidéo sur nos sites pour faire découvrir le naginata :(
