no need to pretend that ur artistic opinions matter. because frankly they dont. u are arguing with history clown. not with me. u lose. reality wins.that said.i have a show opening yesterday in mahhattanat the WHITEBOX, if u want to see my work.biggest opening of the evening.
I'm not sure I agree with his thoughts on clinical depression, but those on 'bad students' ring true, if a little generalized. Not to romantize them all, but SOME of the most talented artists I know are mavericks and failing academically. They aren't ticking boxes, they're making their own.
In school, you're taught to think inside the box, but outside is where the real fun is.
this old dinosaur talks utter shit, from everything to his idea of what happens in an art class, his romantic notions of the dropout artist to his idiocy surrounding clinical depression.
i found him humorous and spot on. his insight is a by-product of 40 years as an art critic. so u would think the guy has learned a few things about creativity. and guess what? he has. u sound like one of those clinically depressed haters. not sexy.
This guy has a point, artist like to rebel and think outside the box. My friends and I, most of which are good artists, aren't A+ students though I am a freshman taking sophomore honors classes so there is an exemption.
actually this guy has a point. a lot of great artists were bad students. Picasso, Rauschenberg, and Twombly were hated by a lot of their teachers..just to name a few. Jean-Michel Basquiat did not even go to school. Yes to be a great artist you have to be smart but a lot of the time you don't give a fuck about school because you realize it's just another dumb hierarchy
Basquiat was not an artist, he was only the cocksucker and muppet of Warhol, nothing else. You are a nerd if you seriously believe that Basquiat was an artist.
@JuliendAnce art elitist alert haha how was he not an artist? he's a great artist. a better one than you'll ever be. and nerd? yeah i could be considered one, you sound like an art jock
elitist is too much cred to this sad faced muppet. basquiat was the final archetype for the abstract expressionist aethetic. his work put the cap stone on that approach to painting. no one has done it better or as good since him. and u have done what? .........except show ur #$% (?) warhol was as a matter of actual fact a groupie of JMB. do some research before u talk out of ur @#$ thru a straw.
You are just another american redneck full of cultural humiliation and believing that a only a revolution equalizing mediocrity with talent could save you... just die.
u could not be more wrong than u at this moment. u obviously are just a thin skinned hater. with nothing to show for ur loud opinions. lol. basqiats for his time when he did what he did was amazing. and u are .......yeah. save ur childish insults and come run real. abstraction is not 2500 years old as it pertains to art in the 20th century. which is what we was on about. dont try and confuse the issue.u are smug jack@#$ with hate in ur heart. simple.
really why the hate? u do realize we are only talking about art? wow.well sorry but i think living is the better move right about now. ur fake smuggery and euro trash self importance is kind a cute.
@skyjuiceification Whatever accolades you've won, whatever praise you've received, remember: "Too much ego will kill your talent." (And I'm saying this as a friend.)
Stop believing in your own hype, stop squabbling on the internet, and go work on your art. Everything else is detrimental. While your busy prancing around proving you've got everything to lose, some nobody out there still has everything to prove -- and they've already seen what you can do. Prove to them you can compete. Not "us".
@Phagott I'll give you Rauschenberg and Twombly, but in what sense was Picasso a bad student? He was bored with his classes at Malaga and so often didn't bother to attend them, but his was largely because he was a child prodigy who had thoroughly mastered classical techniques by the age of sixteen asnd had little to learn there.
As for Basquiat, he was simply a hack who's almost been already forgotten.
@polymath7 Picasso skipped classes regularly to sketch in Paris. Why is everyone so against Basquiat. And he is actually beginning to be recognize more and more. He is getting more and more major retrospectives in reputable galleries around the world
Completely stupid man, obviously another american redneck complexed with culture and talent.
Artists have to solve very big intellectual problems in their fields, in litterature, painting, music... producing a style, i.e. an artistic expression corresponding to a particular subjective experience, burn enormous amounts of energy and talent. The level required to get university diplomas is nothing compared to the one required to achieve a style.
@gbatemper123 and chances are very good that savant don't have enough people's skills and life skills to succeed, no matter how talented they are. Also, good art reflects life experience and knowledge. Savant are at best good technicians. Good artists are both good technicians and good expressers of ideas.
I disagree with this theory because its based on a cliche. In reality, great artists have ranged in type from been both structured and responsible to self-destructive and chaotic, and everything in between. what "it" is can't be defined by poses.
@oceandrew true, but that doesn't mean that cliches can't be a fallacy. the issue here is why is someone in a "Credible" position of professional opinion spouting them with such authority? this man should be fired.
@NotNamedJones People in "credible" professional positions will often spout opinions that others may disagree with. It is often said that if you're not making waves you're not working hard enough, that you're just coasting.
I have to say that our schools suck because educators keep their heads down and don't want to be singled out by parent groups who will push for their dismissal if they don't tow the party line.... whichever party that may be - evangelical, communist.... whatever.
This guy is spitting bullshit. I never seen anything beautiful my ass. John Constable said the opposite, he said he has never seen anything Ugly in his whole life. Damn modernist.
@BleachedSin "I never seen anything beautiful my ass." I'm not sure you completely understand what he is saying. The very next thing he says is that what he believes in are experiences of beauty. He then goes on the explain what that means, which comes from an idea of impermanence and the subjective nature of beauty. It would seem you heard that one sentence and latched on, and missed the rest of the video coming up with your insightful comment.
the fact that so many reading this thread felt self-concious about that one line says a lot. me thinks thou protest too much. it is a unique trait of the current generation to argue against seasoned wisdom with smug indifference to logic and eldership.
Kind of funny. I always came in late with a hangover and my work was quite a bit better than most people in my college classes. All I needed to do was apply myself.
@jannonymous I don't think money is this guys reason for not buying a nice looking suit. The "New Yorker" isn't a po-dunk magazine, I am sure they pay their Critics and Writers very well. If this guy is a senior critic that probably means he is paid better than very well. He is either making a statement, needlessly cheap, or one serious user.

You don'y even know what "abstract" means. Go to sleep. Abstraction is a 2500 years old concept and it has nothing to do with Basquiat.

disagree; the father of japanese animation, Tezuka Osamu, graduated from Kyoto Medical University, he was an excellent student.
People should stop getting those romantic notions of artist; it's just another damn job.
