Chronology really doesn't dictate style though. A good example is new Judas Priest sounding like bands that didn't exist when they came to be. What I'm thinking of specifically is the use of sweep picking in their guitar work. It's not a bad thing though. You shouldn't just make it big and stop progressing. I remember seeing these guys at the same show as Lamb of God and not knowing them, even though we were from the same area.

Also, if you look at some of the lyrics of the Christian Death Metal bands, most of them are not actually about death. Some might argue that because of those lyrics, it does not actually classify as Death Metal, but to me, music genres are classified by the actual music and not the lyrics

By professing their religious beliefs, rather than hiding or denouncing them, Christian Metal or Death Metal bands are the polar opposite of sell-outs. Also, making music about death is not the same thing as actually killing a person, so it's not technically a sin, at least that's how I see it. By the way, it's Cannibal Corpse.
