Haha I notice many kali masters are quite "chubby" and on the heavy side, but I never wanna mess with them. It is one thing to be fat but another to be fat and dangerously skilled. I think not many can even stay in a fight with Guro Tom Kier for 1 min...Probably get killed
Live blade training. Yep, very first day give noob a long very sharp blade, sharper the better ask them to twirl it it around , maybe spar some people with the live blade. Only way to go ..;)
Correct, early in my training I desrespected the live blade and i payed for it. Now, i beleave that the blade deserves the utmost respect. I've been training for awhile and for solo prictace i use the live blade also.
Will someone please tell me what is the real story behind the roots of this style? When I first heard of Sayoc Kali, it was described as a family system, generations old, coming all the way from Cavite in the Philipppines. Now I hear that it was created by the Sayocs after learning various styles. So WTF is it really? If they're going to market themselves well, they better get their propaganda straight. LOL!!!
I still don't know either. I only put this up because I light the music background. Last year I had an opportunity to attend Tuhan Chris Sayoc Jr seminar. It a family system but i heard rumors it's was taken from PTK (peketi tirsia kali).
Sayoc Kali is a constantly evolving system. So it isn't difficult to market, you're asking right now which means there's interest right? Don't get confused by the simple fact that the Sayocs took generations of knowledge on how to organize, define, research, and keep their family art growing when others pride themselves in having a finite set of methods, and basically trolling Sayoc related posts since that's the only way they can market themselves.
what really impresses me about Sayoc Kali that i have not really seen in other FMA systems is the feeder-base mentality training. Lots of systems have defender-base knife training.
Back tot he video. Look at this man's skill and not his size. He is one of founders of Sayoc Kali. The man's flow with a knife and open hand strikes are proficient. So show respect.
The skill is in the fighting NOT the campfire carenza, it's not the man's size that bothers me, it's FMA turning into a drill art rather than a fighting art
@anklecranker6 Every tribal warrior culture had dancing and form drills. They are called ritual dances and mock fighting. Also, study up on who you are commenting on about being "alive". If you've never moved a live blade in the night, and expect to fight in bright gym conditions then it will be a good lesson. You propose being alive - well these weapons are very sharp - so you have to know them very well to move around so effortlessly and with confidence.
No arguement there. Drills are important, But even Bruce Lee said rehearsed rythym doesnt work. But FMa has the best free flow I';ve scenme. They are doing free flow there. Its just ceremonial what they are doing. I doubt its all they are doing in their training.
Your right FMA does have the best flow drills, but I've sparred alot of guy's that were great at flow drills but sucked at sparring, I just think the drills don't translate all the time into fighting
If you check out the real Game of Death Movie from the Documentary about Bruce Lee. The scene where he fights Dan Inosanto with a bamboo stick he explains his weapon is "alive" while the escimador he fights is confined to his drills. Drills teach us that we have options and teaches us flow But in a real fight we apply the flow with aliveness.
drills don't teach options they teach patterns, why do you need the pattern? why not just train ALIVE with no pattern, just progressive sparring, if you train that way everything do will work in full contact, think about it
you need to crawl before you walk. you can do drills with aliveness. Its like when u 1st teachn kids martial arts. they have to learn how to stand and then move, before u do strikes and kicks
Thats why they are not progressive. you have to learn to do everything. Sparring must always play a factor. Because a fight is unpredictable. You dont know what could happen in a fight.
Answer me a question, how do you get ALIVE training from a DEAD pattern flow drill? you can't, you can only get ALIVE training from a resisting opponent, thats what ALIVENESS is
Hence sparring. thats what TKD guys do. but u can aliveness in drills as well. u justhave to give resistance. BTW man, where do u train. I'm located in Philadelphia
drills reinforce muscle memory, to react automatically to certain situations. sometimes drills can conditions bad muscle memory especially when learning a new system. learning options or variations in technique are good too. i prefer show multiple variations, for example 4-6 version of gunting against the same stike.
I totally agree what he's saying. But what basically what that is is Sparring. Thats basically what aliveness is. We sparr to understand what works and what doesnt work. There is a place for drills and there is a place for sparring. As Bruce said we must apply. So yeah aliveness "sparring" is very important. Bottom line. Drills alone doesnt work.
@anklecranker6 Check the Sayoc Stick fighting drills for "aliveness". This way you will have information before you comment about what Sayoc is about. Also, please display your live blade alive sparring.
whats the issue then?.the important is, its from the phil.before the coming of Spaniard for god, gold, glory (opression, slavery etc) we shared thesame rich culture, style of martial arts.the moro-moro dance then was utilized by the spaniards to bring hatred betwen indio and moro.thr divide&rule tactics work.thy enslave the so called filipino and using them to constantly harassing the moro in the south who are firmly protecting the rich heritage, how sad.hehehe
if you want to know more about this art go to the Philippines. there are so Grand-Masters much better than Inosanto and those Pinoy-American Masters particularly in Visayaz and Mindanao.....serious.
oh yah now i know the heavy set guy at 59 seconds and the guy at 2:00 minutes look like the technical advisers
that toght sayoc kali on the set of that movie the hunted they also teach seal teams and delta then the old guy at 2:02 looks like the navy seal from combt missions if u look up combat missions on u tube u can see what I mean cus that guy probably knows kali.
...Most of the guys are Phillipinos, who are teaching the people of the areas they reside in. So if you're a white American, there they are. If you're in Malaysia, there they are.
AFAIK, In the Philippines, moro-moro style denotes movements resembling those of dancers mock-fighting as moros vs christians in zarzuela or moro-moro(i.e. not real moro) stage shows during feasts of patron saints celebrating the victory of christians over the moros.
