Hmm, I definitely prefer the attitude and point of view of Chris Knox over that of Matthew Bannister. Perhaps Sneaky Feelings were a little too polished for Flying Nun. What did Bannister expect on a lo-fi D.I.Y. record label?
the musical approach w/ Sneaky Feelings and Enemy/Toy Love/Tall Dwarfs took is so different, you can't help but see that there'd be differences between the prime movers.
jpdkiwi, i think i'd agree w/ you that Verlaines were probably the best NZ band ever, and it's a fvcking tough field to best, w/ the Chills, Clean, Dead C, Gordons/Bailter Space, Goblin Mix/3Ds, Bats, Able Tasmans, etc in the running.
Well, some of their later stuff I wasn't that keen on, but "Send You" is one of my favourite NZ albums, better than most of the Chills albums really...but I must admit, the Verlaines are my favourite NZ band
That Matthew Bannister dude is a little whiny pussy...what a weasel. Yeah, Chris Knox seems a bit brash and obnoxious, but at least he sticks to his guns and knows what he's about. 4-track recording is what made those bands sound amazing....warm and natural. Sneeky Feelings don't really hold a candle to The Chills or The Verlaines anyways.
Matthew Bannister is a tutor at Wintec in Hamilton now and he's definately not a pussy. I've been to many of his lectures and he's very on-to-it. Knows his stuff about the NZ music scene etc and he's brainy as hell when it comes to discourse theory, semiotics and the like. I respect him and his music a lot.
Yeah, Chris Knox will never let you forget that he is Chris Knox. LOL. I would argue that the "Dunedin Sound" was not a rubber stamp same sounding music but rather an attitude that song came first and when in doubt, use a bit of reverb. There was definitely a vibe, attitude and similar "music first - no rock posing" that came out of Dunedin during that period.
Chris Knox seems like a bit of a dick... If ever there was a consistent music scene in the world, then it was probably this one... I know there were differences, but the similarities definitely unified these bands into a 'scene' of sorts... Plus they all knew each other and supported each other.
thanks for the reply! i love most of the bands in this documentary but have had a hard time getting into sneaky feelings... that little excerpt sounded really promising though. will check out that compilation.
Husband House - it was only released as a single, but was on their best of compilation. They actually have a new compilation I didn't know about called "Positively George St" which you can get at SmokeCDs pretty cheap...
