Quite a jump, the original being in C and this being in G. I'm sure they went into rehearsals and Sting said "Boys, we have to make some changes". Not unusual for singers to lose their top end as they age, not at all. Funny thing, I saw both Plant/Page and Nazareth when they were back on the road after many years and at both shows I was blown away by the fact that both singers had their range back. Now that's rare.
Yea, that wimp Sting toned and jazzed it down (sarcasm, I loved the The Police singer though) but grandpa Andy and drummer extraordinaire Stu did rock it after minute 3 and spiced it up (4:49 "welcome to this Stewart Copeland show")
sting is over fifty, but if your telling me this lacks intensity then you need to reconsider what you know about music. further more bands only do reunions for two reasons, money or memories, the fans don't factor in as much, this time it's for them.
The high notes Sting could hit in the early years could in no way be sustained in later years. I mean by Sychronicity he had dropped the register. I have to say though, the intensity of this song without him being in that abnormally high register is kind of lost. For me the thing about the reunion tours is this, you get real psyched to see them together again and then when you do it's kind of a letdown. They're playing great and as a drummer love Stew, but like most reunions the magic seems gone
Why the negative votes on my comment? It's the truth!
I am a musician, a fan of the Police , and saw this tour. It was good.
BUT, when you tune down this far, you are changing the song itself. I can understand a half step or even a full step to save Stings voice, but this is a full fifth of an octave lower!
I defy ANYONE to say this is half as good as the original. Its a lazy version.
Its tuned so low so Sting can coast and collect your bucks
Your right in a way saying that the lower pitch made the song not as strong as the used to do in the past. But come on man, If you're a musician than you must know what is like being on the road. Plus, Sting is older and he probably feel better doing the song in this way. Is not a bad version
@pflo99 Geez, give the guy a break. He's been singing for at least 40 years and he's pretty much at the senior discount age.Why would you attribute tuning down to laziness?Maybe he just can't hit the notes as consistently as he could as a young man and doesn't wanna sound like Peter Brady in front of thousands of adoring fans.
@pflo99 He's not the only person to tune down, Brian Adams also does it, and if you watch behind the scenes of Genesis dvd you can see Phil Collin's frustration as he's not able to reach the same notes he could when was in the prime of his singing career. There's 30 years between when So lonely was written and this. And he wrote it, surely it's up to him how he sings it. Not as good? Maybe. Lazy? I think that would be using backing tracks and miming, people half his age are doing that!

Sting looks a lot like Danny Bonaduce...but without the facial hair and much better.
