Actually this was a homage to Carlos Hathcock who managed to kill a Vietnamese Sniper through his sight and eye during the Vietnam War. Although Carlos Hathcock had the high ground and the two snipers were alot closer

actually you're wrong. by today's standard yes with our 12x50 power optics that snipers use, it would be very hard to accomplish a shot like that unless your using a high caliber rifle such as a .50 BMG with armor piercing rounds. even if a sniper was he wouldn't be firing at flesh, too much material spread. but back in the day when optics weren't that advanced a 30-06, which is what the springfield uses (jackson's rifle) or a 7mm mauser would have no problem with a shot like that.
