BJJ = Basically Japanese Judo. ROFLMAO. I study newaza at a BJJ school but duh. It's a particular aspect of judo training re-packaged and re-marketed to an generally ignorant public. But at least I have a place to train! God bless the J's for inventing it. GB the B's for taking it global.
Could be wrong, assuming the G's invented time travel too.
@shinjukool if it wasnt for bjj, newaza in judo would be next to dead, thanks to the gracies many people who would never be grappling are.Olympic judo killed newaza. The gracies took judo in a different direction, self defense and match fighting and they did indeed invent new variations in newaza that have never existed in judo just as the kosen judoka did in japan.
@scarred10 wrong and right. newaza in kodokan judo matches would be what it is. in "kosen judo" which is kodokan by other rules it would be preserved. Maeda applied judo to match fighting and the g self defense comes straight from the kodokan curriculum. i do "bjj". It has made newaza more accessible globally. that is true. list for us all the new techniques, even a few.
@shinjukool spider guard, knee shield guard,de la riva guard, reverse de la riva,x guard,1 leg x guard,50/50 position.Thats just positions, you have all the sweeps from those as well.Brabo chokes and variations on arm triangle chokes.Leg locks also havent been used in judo for over 50 years but were present in the original system.Kosen is so rare and nonexistant outside japan that it has no influence globally unlike bjj.The gracie combatives is unrelated to judo and twice as effective.
@scarred10 can see spider in old videos ... it's judo. Watch the beginning of the Kosen vids that have photos from the 1900s. the others didn't exist? bah. not talking about Olympic Judo. Judo. if you want to believe BJJ is some kind of original creation. go ahead. I do agree that in Brasil a nice sporting culture has been created around judo newaza. Basically Japanese Judo as the man below says.
@shinjukool if a concentration on newaza can come up with original techs in japan in the kosen universities then so can the brazilians over a much longer period involving 100 times more practitioners.Even eddie bravo has originated many techs never seen in bjj.BJJ is a developement and specialisation of a particular part of judo
@scarred10 eddie has admitted that he didnt invent anything the twister is actually a folkstyle wrestling move second the gracies were ranked in judo and taught by a 7 dan judoka maeda who was versed in newaza third spider gaurd 5050 and all you mention are are just renamed judo moves they need to take a move name after themselves to promote the school also japan teaches judo differently than in the states newaza never stopped in japan it just went undergound after roosevelt put a ban in japan
@sonnych69 a few gracies were black belts in judo but were useless enough at it,they never practised it with commitment. The 5050 and several other positions and techs were developed by trial and error only since the last few decades in bjj, they were never even in bjj before, never mind judo, its a continual process of innovation.Newaza never stopped anywhere, the rule just made it unproductive to spend time on it.It was kano and then the ijf that hampered newaza ,not the martial arts ban.
6:45 was that pulling guard IN JUDO????? This is another proof that BJJ came from Judo (to those BJJ people who say think otherwise).
BJJ (aka Judo Newaza) uses 99% of traditional Kodokan Judo techniques ... I will say that the sub-style of Judo (BJJ) did invent a few extra sweeps that were not known before in traditional Judo. Also, in BJJ, they do not like to give up their backs .. something you see a lot of modern Sport Judo... I disagree with this (on Judo's side) for self-defense reasons.
@pcjudosambo pulling guard was done from the early 1900s and before when faced with a better thrower, its a competition strategy to get to newaza quickly.Everyone knows bjj is a further specialisation of early judo(not olympic judo).Virtually nobody in judo ever thinks about self defense, its a sport, same for sport bjj.Real bjj is about self defense and vale tudo but sadly its very rare now
@scarred10 i agree that sport judo & sport bjj both have drifted away from self-defense but even with the sporting side pf the art can be used for self defense.
@pcjudosambo it can be but if youve never been punched in the face its hard to deal with. Also the entire prefight ritual isnt trained, thats more important than any techniques.Sports training can be helpful once the fight starts but often theres no fight, just a surprise attack until you go down and then a kicking.
@scarred10 Well, I see your point but I would have to somewhat disagree, especially from a personal point of view because I am a Judoka and I am also a Sambo player. I've never ever practiced Judo or Sambo solely for defense, it was more for sport yet I have successfully used Judo/Sambo in self-defense situations where fists were flying & sticks, rocks, etc. Judo/Sambo helped me by closing in the distance, taking the person down before he hits me & then performing ne-waza to stabilize him.
@pcjudosambo by the way. hats off to the founder of Sambo. DIED because he refused to say Kano was not his teacher. Shot him. He easily couldve said "oh this is Russian jujitsu". Amazing.
Good comment, well said. The two are one in the same and should be brothers, not put down one another like ignorant fools. I love Judo, Nage-waza and Ne-waza (bjj). Don't let the rules ruin the relationship between these two arts. They are not noticeably different if you read a book and study the moves, visit a dojo, etc. Ground fighting techniques (Ne-waza) are ground fighting techniques... They are not different arts, but there will always be different styles.
Actually its not bjj, Its the other way around. Bjj is actually judo newaza. Bjj came from this form of jujitsu. The jujitsu specialization of Judo newaza didn't come from bjj.
