I think it depends from the songs: some of the old stuff like this or Wishmaster were much better sung by Tarja, however Anette does an excellent job for tracks like for istance Dead Boy's Poem, whose version I honestly prefer.
Anette is not bad... but as far as she goes in Nightwish, she's horrible. It just doesn't fit, unless, they want to be a mainstream sell out radio band. Sorry but I really do miss the old Nightwish.

To be honest i think Tarja would have left the band even if they havent kicked her out... Anette is just doing her best! Tarja is one of my favorit singers but i still think the band is doing good whit Anette. Tarja sounded BETTER live than in the studio in most if not every song. Have you ever listened to the End of an Era DVD, or From Wishes to Eternity?
NW can NOT perform anywhere near that level anymore, but back then, they were truly a GREAT band. A band is only as good as it's weakest member, but a singer is even more of a factor than any other member of the band. If the singer sounds like shit, the entire band sounds like shit. Right now, they sound like shit.

I don't hate Annete Olzon, I just think she's a shitty singer and doesn't belong in a band that used to be epic. She's ok in a band like Pain, but chokes badly on stage trying to sing songs that are beyond her abiity to sing.
Concerning US tours, NW toured the US in both 2003 and 2004. In 2005 the US tours that were "postponed" until they could work out contractual obligations, but NW management decided to just cancel them rather than live up to their contract.

B) She didn't "demand more money", that's a lie that people on YouTube made up.
They destroyed themselves by firing her, it's akin to Aerosmith firing Steve Tyler, or the Doors firing Jim Morrison. They should have acted like grown men, and stopped thinking that she was easily replaceable and that they were what made the band what it was, and should NEVER have hired a mediocre pop singer to fill her role in the band.
Concerning Marco, in an interview he said he "never liked the classical vocals". Then WHY THE FUCK did he join NW, a band that focused on classical vocals? It seems like he always resented Tarja and wanted her to leave the band. He didn't want to share the stage with her and wanted the noteriety of being the vocalist. He apparently felt slighted that he wasn't getting more attention than he did, and was jealous that SHE was adored by the fans and seen as the band's lead singer.
@IDislikeCowards You really touched the wound there :) These guys weren't and aren't really friends. They just want to feed their egos and try to be 'somebody', even if they have to be cowards and hurt other elements. Then , they come and talk about greedy and band commitment...sad.
Thing is, his voice isn't what it used to be, and he messes up when he has to sing more often than he used to. Him and Anette can't harmonize, she either drowns him out with her screaching, or throws him off with her out of tune notes.
I doubt he'll ever sing as well as he did when he DID harmonize with Tarja and sing duets with her, such as Phantom of the Opera. Now he's struggling to sing backup to songs like Wish I Had an Angel.

What a great oriental sound. Although it is originally sung in much higher notes, she makes HER song out of that, and that´s the reason why she is a very good successor for Tarja.
And, btw, I respect her because she has the strenght and the brave to sing the old Nightwish songs although she knows that she will be flamed for that. She goes her own way, and this is real true greatness.

I think shes as good. It sounds better then the Opera clashing with the Metal. Now they all sound like badass duets, which is what it should of always sounded like.

Hmm... well, I don't think she did badly in there. Given her voice type etc. she can't do precisely what Tarja did and it's good that she doesn't try but makes this song her own.
The stark contrast between the Arabic phrasing and the rest came from Tarja's switching from the much "softer" opera-inspired style to harsh throaty singing. Annette sings musical style which is already rather harsh and focused. The song loses a bit without the transition but it's good anyway, IMO.

Tarja sounded BETTER live than in the studio in most if not every song. Have you ever listened to the End of an Era DVD, or From Wishes to Eternity?
NW can NOT perform anywhere near that level anymore, but back then, they were truly a GREAT band. A band is only as good as it's weakest member, but a singer is even more of a factor than any other member of the band. If the singer sounds like shit, the entire band sounds like shit. Right now, they sound like shit.

LOL, so you mean Tuomas, Anette, Marco, Emppu, or Jukka AREN'T there for "money and fame"? Tarja put a HELL of a lot more into the music than Anette ever will, and poured emotion and passion into the songs.
Anette is singing for a paycheck, and is just there as a replacement, and doing a pretty poor job of it at that.
So have you bought any Anette Olzon merchandise lately, or bought her solo album?

I don't hate Annete Olzon, I just think she's a shitty singer and doesn't belong in a band that used to be epic. She's ok in a band like Pain, but chokes badly on stage trying to sing songs that are beyond her abiity to sing.
Concerning US tours, NW toured the US in both 2003 and 2004. In 2005 the US tours that were "postponed" until they could work out contractual obligations, but NW management decided to just cancel them rather than live up to their contract.

A) Tarja didn't cancel any shows, unlike Anette.
B) She didn't "demand more money", that's a lie that people on YouTube made up.
They destroyed themselves by firing her, it's akin to Aerosmith firing Steve Tyler, or the Doors firing Jim Morrison. They should have acted like grown men, and stopped thinking that she was easily replaceable and that they were what made the band what it was, and should NEVER have hired a mediocre pop singer to fill her role in the band.

Concerning Marco, in an interview he said he "never liked the classical vocals". Then WHY THE FUCK did he join NW, a band that focused on classical vocals? It seems like he always resented Tarja and wanted her to leave the band. He didn't want to share the stage with her and wanted the noteriety of being the vocalist. He apparently felt slighted that he wasn't getting more attention than he did, and was jealous that SHE was adored by the fans and seen as the band's lead singer.

Thing is, his voice isn't what it used to be, and he messes up when he has to sing more often than he used to. Him and Anette can't harmonize, she either drowns him out with her screaching, or throws him off with her out of tune notes.
I doubt he'll ever sing as well as he did when he DID harmonize with Tarja and sing duets with her, such as Phantom of the Opera. Now he's struggling to sing backup to songs like Wish I Had an Angel.

Anette shouldn't sing Tarja songs. Tarja shouldn't sing Anette songs. Simple logic because Anette sounds bad at this. It was written for Tarja, who has had classical singing lessons, not for Anette, who hasn't. She should have singing lessons though.

@wardenec ... do you mean the digital delay? Tarja did it, those verse parts are meant to have the echoes for the "Siren at Sea" effect, they've always been there. Watch another live show with Tarja again. I like this version, it's a fresh take on it.

What a great oriental sound. Although it is originally sung in much higher notes, she makes HER song out of that, and that´s the reason why she is a very good successor for Tarja.
And, btw, I respect her because she has the strenght and the brave to sing the old Nightwish songs although she knows that she will be flamed for that. She goes her own way, and this is real true greatness.

I think it's pretty awesome to see Nighwish carrying on like this. It's a shame that some fans don't respect it, but that's their problem. I love how they still sing the old songs. Anette does most of them pretty well. <3

Anette is much different from Tarja but she's not terrible. She's actually pretty amazing on this song. Plus Tarja was so dead on stage and Anette actually moves and involves the audience.

Anette is a good singer, but her vocal range is totally different from Tarja's, the "old" songs just don't fit Anette's voice.
Imo they need a woman with a lyrical soprano voice, the old songs just lose their power when Anette sings them.

Hmm... well, I don't think she did badly in there. Given her voice type etc. she can't do precisely what Tarja did and it's good that she doesn't try but makes this song her own.
The stark contrast between the Arabic phrasing and the rest came from Tarja's switching from the much "softer" opera-inspired style to harsh throaty singing. Annette sings musical style which is already rather harsh and focused. The song loses a bit without the transition but it's good anyway, IMO.

I agree with you, but the culprit is the Tuomas! But one thing is for sure, anette try to imitate Tarja, but she can not! She sings badly, and many people agree! The Tarja should come back and save this band! ! At least Emppu save it! :)
