I know NOTHING about music, but one thing I can tell you guys, my heart goes like crazy everytime I listen to these kind of music. I LOVE classical music, not because of some technique or anything, but for what it makes me feel. And Joshua, definitely, makes me feel something.
All I can say is that you music snobs are the reason most people CAN'T STAND classical music. It isn't accessible to those "less musically informed" people, because it's all about technique instead of HEART!! JB draws out the heart of every piece he plays. THAT is what I love and appreciate. That is why he is SO brilliant!!
Bell? Less musically informed? He plays a Strad, he plays it well, and he hypnotised me last time I heard him play Sibelius at the CSO in Opera Hall. Give the guy some respect, man!
Fuck off less musically informed you wanker! He tears my heart out You are so busy hating that you cant hear the beauty you are on another vibration totally, lower obviously.
I think it's a shame that musicians aren't paid well. I think they should have one of the highest paying professions out there! Think of all the hard work and effort and time they take to create something that EVERYONE can benefit from!
On another note, Joshua Bell, the orchestra, Beethoven, and this piece are quite fantastic :)
@rhinolovingpianist77 agreed, but it just depends on how much the culture appreciates music and what type of music they appreciate. i mean, of course we have all the pop garbage out there. some of it may be crappy music, but it's still music. i'll bet joshua bell isn't hurting for cash though....on a historical note, the only reason composers like mozart and beethoven made any $ back in those days was because the had rich, and often, royal benefactors who paid them
He makes it look like you need to move every cell in your body to get something out of the violin.I don't think it is all necesary for the violin. It may be his system of a violinists trance state.
@violin614 He's moving every cell in his body because classical music moves every cell in your body. Like someone mentioned earlier, his performance is so lived!! You can't help but feel Beethoven when you perform his masterpieces!!
I agree absolutely. Bell is a showman who appeals to the less musically informed. It´s a pity really, because with another 20 years hard work under his belt he might just make a halfway decent violinist.
The orchestra is fantastic, Joshua Bell have a very personal vision and one of the most beautifull frases and tone ,and the Hall acustic is fantastic to.
3.47-3.48 aha! He makes a little finess similar to what I have always tried to imagine.
He makes a little slide down the g string.
For that open g string note alone (at 3.48) I would invest in an expensive pirastro Olive g string (or anything better).
Actually, there are a couple of things by Beethoven, which an extremely fine g string might be worth it for. Even an open G string is a great art to make it reverberate.
Yes, it is unusual without conductor. I saw a video of Kyung unusual without conductor. I saw a video of Kyung Wha Chung (who is a great violinist as well)She played with a chember orchestra without conductor, and she was conducting. By the way, it is to know about her biography and her family, especially about her mother, how she bought her daughter's violin. You can do web search and find out about her easily.
My teacher insists that his students play without the shoulder pad because not only is it really bad for your shoulders, but it also builds up you tension (to get violin up, you'll use the shoulder pad as a lever and just push down hard on the chinrest). But once you get to Joshua Bell's level of playing, I doubt it'll matter very much. I was just really surprised... a lot of professional players don't play with shoulder pads.
me and my teacher were just talking about this the reason most professional players dont use one is when they started playing there were no shoulder rests or they were very new and it is alot different to use one and takes getting used to once u r used to playing with out it all depends on the player and that players teacher
should pads are used when nothing else suffices...if your neck is long, it is long. A shoulder pad helps, although presents it's own set of problems as well. There is nothing perfect for people with a neck and long arms. Your teacher must be of old school. Unfortunately, a lot of long necked people will suffer injuries because the teacher told them to take the pad off. I should know, I was one of them. Now my teacher, now my colleague, agrees a pad is necessary. So, care for your neck.

There is nothing better than an Olive G String!!!!!! They are the best strings created by humans.

I have since tried passione by pirastro, and i've heard, and MIGHT agree that they are better. Not sure. maybe depends on violin/bow.
