I watched this doco on TV today and was disgusted by the scientologists behaviour. I have been researching cults recently and any genuine religion invites you to ask questions & research other faiths etc. They dont try break up families because of someone being a non-believer.Scientology is a cult because it doesnt allow poeple to question it. They are afraid they will discover they arent genuine. Its too secretive for a religion that supposedly doesnt have anything to hide.

and on almost every occassion someone as been able to benifit from the information I have shared, and you dont have to be looking for "converts to a new world religon. Social work are overwhelmed just about everywhere. Waiting lists for therpeies are long, too long and often dont have a good outcome. I have had two friends take there own lives. I found myslef going down that route. I did two scientology courses and read a little bit more. I can honestly say that I have not been "brainwashed" except the rubbish which was making me think that way. Only read a couple of books and recieved a little coaching. Im now back working as an aircraft mechanic and well. I consider myself Christian, have previously worked with people with multiple difficulties, offenders etc. . .
Im not so sure that Scientology does its self ant favors by calling itself a religion. A Movement might be a better way. I dont know a whole lot about R Hubbard. Then again I have never heard of a public figure which hasnt been discredited. We seem to be very good at pulling down public figures. I agree that people have the right to believe what they want but people also have the right to speak out against what they want. People pick on scientology because for something that calls its self a religion it sure does break up a lot of families. There are loads of differences. Not that i'm a fan of religion either. Scientology doesn't handle criticism like other religions. It tries to medicate people. It separates families. it charges people for the 'truth'. It isn't based on faith but on indoctrination. That's why they don't tell you about xenu until you are OT7 or whatever. The whole structure of Scientology is set up to prey on weakness and make money. Operation Normandy, fair game,= not a religion.
Of course they have...but that's what history is for! You study the mistakes of the past and take action to not let them happen again, whether in the modern jewish faith, christian church, islam or in scams like Scientology.

Anyone who has worked with editing sound can easily hear the difference. I'm no expert by any stretch, I'm no audiophile. I have friends who claim to be able to tell the difference between mp3 compressions just by listening-I can't. But I can easily hear when someone has pushed the volume of a recording beyond the quality available in the sound waves.

Loathe as I am to appear to appear to defend the non-BBC version, there are many possible reasons as to why the sound levels are different. The versions are not from the same microphone, recording equipment, etc, and so cannot be directly compared. Most notable difference is that the non-BBC version was filmed from in front of Sweeny. It is also likely that the sound level in the BBC version has in some way been modified for broadcast - for example it is faded out during Sweeny's voiceover.

Have you not noticed that the overwhelming majority of comments support the BBC and Sweeney across all the clips on youtube? That is the ones, unlike your own, where the comments are enabled. What's the deal? Do you not like when people exercise their right to free speech?
No, I don't think Sweeney's reaction was right, but if Scientology wants people to focus on its positive work it should let people see that, and not follow, supress and defame anyone who wants to take a look. Not many other religions follow reporters around with a videocamera and spend subsequent weeks after the report has aired decrying it.
I'd say it's pretty wrong for members of the church of Scientology to follow Sweeney around and see who he talks to. Any other religion doesn't do that.

John Sweeny should not be complaining about editing out. The BBC are past masters at editing out the truth in many instances. Its just that they never get confronted as the man in the street does not have the resources that the UK goverment or scientology have to take them on and bring them to boot.

is it the difference in sound what you are concerned about? it appears to be recorded with a different camera and presumably different sound. it is very distorted in the mic, which would make sense given the volume. it may be running through an effect in post, but i'm not sure that would be necessary ...probably pretty distorted at recording. i think the behavior of the CoS looks worse than sweeny, but i'm not concerned about the sound.
Yeah, I agree, the two versions were recorded on different equipment so I don't think the sound difference is so significant. More significant is that is that the voice-over guy leads into it with something totally unrelated, and talks over Tommy so you can't hear that he was the first to raise his voice.

I have had two friends take there own lives. I found myslef going down that route. I did two scientology courses and read a little bit more. I can honestly say that I have not been "brainwashed" except the rubbish which was making me think that way. Only read a couple of books and recieved a little coaching. Im now back working as an aircraft mechanic and well. I consider myself Christian, have previously worked with people with multiple difficulties, offenders etc. . .

Then again I have never heard of a public figure which hasnt been discredited. We seem to be very good at pulling down public figures. There are loads of differences. Not that i'm a fan of religion either. Scientology doesn't handle criticism like other religions. It tries to medicate people. Anyone who has worked with editing sound can easily hear the difference. I'm no expert by any stretch, I'm no audiophile. I have friends who claim to be able to tell the difference between mp3 compressions just by listening-I can't. But I can easily hear when someone has pushed the volume of a recording beyond the quality available in the sound waves.

Loathe as I am to appear to appear to defend the non-BBC version, there are many possible reasons as to why the sound levels are different. The versions are not from the same microphone, recording equipment, etc, and so cannot be directly compared. Most notable difference is that the non-BBC version was filmed from in front of Sweeny. It is also likely that the sound level in the BBC version has in some way been modified for broadcast - for example it is faded out during Sweeny's voiceover.

I don't think this reporter was very smart for what he did; but by the same token, I don't think that his bad choices elevate scientology in any way.

He had been followed by scientologists for days. They armed themselves with all sorts of accusations prior to any interviews. John and his crew had to have a meeting in a toilet as they were not given ANY privacy. Im glad he shouted at them, they're a bunch of bullies and are a farce. We havent accepted them as a religion on britain, and rightfullly so. In short, the people John is shouting at are twats.

Why would a supposedly unbiased "reporter" allow himself to be baited in that way? His outburst proves his bias. He tries to push against Davis, no doubt trying to film an outburst from Davis, but it backfires, and _he_ is the one who explodes. This is amateurish, if anything. Say what you want about journalists, they are supposed to be dispassionate. Sweeney is anything but.

John Sweeny should not be complaining about editing out. The BBC are past masters at editing out the truth in many instances. Its just that they never get confronted as the man in the street does not have the resources that the UK goverment or scientology have to take them on and bring them to boot.

Good work, thanks for doing this. I think even an impartial viewer ought to be able to tell who's manipulating who here. Scientology makes me want to puke but to prevent them spouting their bullshit stops honest, intelligent people from making up their own minds. The gullible suckers that fall for it need protection from the callous sharks that profit from them. That's why we have the freedom to debate and post videos and comments like this.

is it the difference in sound what you are concerned about? it appears to be recorded with a different camera and presumably different sound. it is very distorted in the mic, which would make sense given the volume. it may be running through an effect in post, but i'm not sure that would be necessary ...probably pretty distorted at recording. i think the behavior of the CoS looks worse than sweeny, but i'm not concerned about the sound.

Yeah, I agree, the two versions were recorded on different equipment so I don't think the sound difference is so significant. More significant is that is that the voice-over guy leads into it with something totally unrelated, and talks over Tommy so you can't hear that he was the first to raise his voice.
