They may just be trying to survive, but they're doing it by forcefully threatening others and breaking international laws. Hopefully these "real warriors" won't be in business for much longer. The International community is moving to prevent this type of activity by sending military prevention to that region. Pirates will be arrested or sunk on sight.

Any time a ship is hijacked we sink the fucking thing. Hijackers, crew and all. Just blow the thing out of the water no questions asked. Suddenly there is no point in hijacking a ship. So basically you are say that whoever owns the ship has to blow up millions and millions of dollars worth of goods just to send a message that may or may not work. It's cheaper for them to pay the pirates and make sure they have better security next time.

It would have just angered them and increased piracy in the area. As stupid as it sounds, they did supply the hostages with food and water, and from what I've read, did not torture or harm them. Most of the pirates are young and do dangerous things for money to bring back to their families, who live in poverty. The actions they take is stupid, but you can understand why they do it.
