This is the same thing happening to me, and I don't see much support or many people with this problem. Right now I can only get blackra1n to work and thats a tethered jailbreak... Only thing else I can think to try is to use a larger boot partition.

When I use blackra1n, I tend to have to use it everytime I reboot my iPhone. This is most likely because it's brand-new and Apple have upgraded it :/. So, does this 'Pwnage Tool' work; 1. For windows? and 2. So that I wont have to re-tether it everytime, because I've got alot of exams up and coming, and you have to turn your phone off, and I wont be able to re-tether it at school. :/

You shouldn't jailbreak your iPhone cause now apple made it illegal and if you do jailbreak it then once you restore if you don't want it anymore that your iPhone will be slow because you had a virus on there but depends on how long you kept it on there like say you left black rain or whatever for 4 months then it tiurns out that tour iPhone will start to act slow so don't do it but I'm not gonna tell ou what tocdi cause it's your iphone

seems like you DO NOT need to put it in DFU mode. This is what worked for me.

1-reboot in normal mode

2-open itunes(asks to recover from backup)

3-choose restore....after a few seconds, remove the usb cable

4-itunes will finish normally as if nothing happened

5-plug back in and it will be recognized as your old pod

6-now you have an option to restore with a file.

this worked for me.

If youre already jailbroken (by whatever means), you dont need to mess around with DFU mode at all. Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes. THIS WILL SOLVE THE ERROR 1600.

If you are on 3.0.1 and u used Blackra1n you can create custome IPSW through and pwnage and restore it back. You can even unlock it too, since you are 3.x firmware. Note 3.1.x can be jailbreaked but cannot be unlocked as it updates the baseband.
