federer has the ability to make roddick's serve look very average. I personally don't see why so much fuss is made about roddick's serve. yes it's very powerful and is very effective but it doesn't have the pin point accuracy.

@jamess05milan I am a federer fan. I like to see you try to return a 140 mph serve. It doesnt matter cause it will be behind you before you can move a step to reach it and if you can reach it, it be a hell of pain hitting a 140 mile bullet on your arm. The pros can do it even if it has spins but not you and me

@jamess05milan, as powerful as it is Fed always seems to be leading in the ace count by the end of the match. Check it out, look at their head-to-head statistics (on the atp world tour site) and see if Andy ever out-aced Fed in their 23 career matches.

Yeah, I think the biggest problem for Roddick when he faces the Top 4 is his movement: he is simply not a great mover and they can exploit that. Plus, he's had mono and various other injuries which have hampered his performances of late.

Okay, I will never be as good as Roddick. He has the best serve in the game, a good forehand and a solid backhand, but to be a good player you need to play aggresively or you will lose control of the match. He is hitting his balls from 5+ feet behind the baseline against a guy like federer, who can hit angles with his eyes closed. Roddick needs to rethink strategy, especially against the top guys.

@tzane94 To beat a good player*, you need to play more aggressively. Against the lower ranked players, you can usually out-consist them. But watching the top 5 or so players, we do see a difference in the rallies because their mistakes are more often due to subtler effects of adapting to the other person, whereas watching matches between some of the lower ranked players gives us more of a sense of random/technical errors.

I love watching Fed play tennis whether he wins or loses. It's pure art. Djokovic and Nadal may break his records, but when it comes to imaginative and intelligent tennis, Fed is the best of all time.

poor Roddick.Trying to use his kind of "variety" against a player with real variety at his stage of his career.If only he didn't let his arrogance get in his way.If only he had decided to add more to his 2 shot arsenal that comprised of his once powerful serve/powerful and worked on that backhand;better approach shots & volleys;drop shots and most of all becoming an all-surface player.

Had he done the kind of work Nadal and Djokovic did sooner in his career he would have won more

@MaxSk8rr yea he's been like that for a long time. I never really understood Roddick's progress as a player, I know his results against Fed must have mentally hurt him a lot, but since '05-'06 he's turned into a solid baseline pusher which has given him consistent results, winning 2-3 matches per tournament. But surely he would prefer to lose 10x second round and win a GS or a few masters? He has settled for consistency and given up any risk and surprise.Too scared of failure IMHO = no big wins.
