I remember having this album (head injuries) in the family record collection when I was a young teenager, but a place without a postcard and 10 to 1 overshadowed it, 30 years on I decided to revisit head injuries again, I now think it's their best, maybe not as well produced as 10 to 1, but what a fantastic album, raw, genuine hard rock.
Oh that dancing! Brilliant. I'm proud to say this was my favourite band in the mid to late 80s and early 90s. I was always aware of 10, 9, 8....... and previous records and singles, but was 15 when Diesel and Dust came out, then I went into their back catalogue and discovered gold.
The first time I tripped on LSD was listening to this song in a mates Kombi van with a few other uni mates from Adelaide going on a surfing trip along the Great Ocean Road in 1982. Memories!

i had been given my best 18th birthday present, an electric guitar. 3RRR (Melbourne, Oz) were still testing their FM transmission when i heard this Midnight Oil song and most of it later on my school holidays (vacation)...and the nice chorus of guitar followed by that awesome savage lead solo....changed my life. Trade on the market in my name; I endorse you in darkness so you can trade on the market in the day light; Give up that cash in a cry of deffiance in my name; start with all the comp. that start with your last name.
Too true. Grab a 10 dollar bag of pot, pay your 5 bucks and cruise on in with your tshirt wrapped around your head, just like Garrett, no-one cared. What a band, they would just blow you away every time. No faggot posing and prancing about just tear the joint a new arse. The next night you would go see Chisel, Spys, Rads, Rose Tattoo, Angels, Acca Dacca etc etc for another 5 bucks. Great times indeed....
prolonged sunlight- the fact that garrett gets off his arse and VOICES his opinions and concerns for very relevant and important issues is testament enough..ya think?? too many people like u stay silent..silence =death my friend..
e.g the aboriginal issue,Australias' hidden disgrace.
iTS NOT in the past 'mate'..the problems are still very relevant today..clearly you are just another ignoranty ey?? yes,its true, our ancestors and government are to blame, mainly, but its also important for people to 'recognize' this situation.and the situation IS still bad..many of them living in dire straits poverty..but i guess u dont care hey as you sit back and drink your VB of a nite? its not in the past pal and i suggest u change your racial opinion and show some heart.
I aint gonna chanmge my ways mate why should i feel bad there in dire straight maybee they should get off there ass and get a job or live as there ancestors did why is it our job to make them live better its up to each individual to live there life if they cant get a job thats tough luck i wouldnt ask for a hand out and they shouldnt either its up to a person to make something out of there life not a country
bit hard for them to make something of their lives when the government does fuck all to help. they cant get decent jobs due to discrimination and lack of education..if you knew anything about Australian history and politics, then you would know that howard fucked a lot up for 'our indigenous people. look to NZ for how their natives(maoris) have claimed decent recognition and rights..very hard for a person to 'make something' of their lives when the opportunities are very limited!
Fuck multination lets be honest my oppinion matches problly the majority of australian born and australian parented people now you being a "political correct "person feal it nessesary to bring up teh abo's and there strife and how its not there fault the australian people should help them and well fuck that i aint gonna lift one finger to help anyone basic line is you take care of yourself look out for number one the abo;s got to do it you got to do it everyone should do it look out for your own
I think your comment is one of the most arrogant and ignorant i've heard of in ages..so typical..ppl like u r a disgrace to this MULTINATIONAL country.like to see u say your comments to their faces.hmmm.
On 30 Oct, he knocked back a 300 room hotel and day spa, 1700 resort villas, 300 resort apartments, a ferry terminal, retail village, golf course and sporting oval, at Great Keppel. And there is or isn't Traveston Dam. Swing out wide on the driveway when you're delivering the lammies.
@TJnomadi A weird dynamic, in the US they were always classed as "alternative". American fans tend to be politically aware - even when they disagree with the band. An overwhelmingly socially liberal fanbase. Been years since I was there, but seemed to me then many Aussie fans did not care one way or another about the politics in the songs, they were there for the music first. But that's sort of like American fans and Bruce Springsteen or Rob's hero John Cafferty.
I'm offering a prize (choice of meat tray or a crate of lamingtons) to anyone who can name anything remotely useful Garrett has done since he became an MP. Spread the word.
ProlongedSunlight, one useful thing Garrett has done is show us that - A person can desire to make the World a better place, but as soon as he/she goes into the political arena, all the GOOD they desired goes straight out the window. Everyone knows politicians are liars. They serve big business, not the people. Politics comes from the word 'Poly', which means many, and the word 'Tic', which are blood sucking parasites. POLITICS = MANY TICS.
@ghosttroop perhaps some politicians are not liars & actually try to do some good. & perhaps some of these people serve the people not the corporations. think about the way you think, then you might just perhaps see our world in a more positive light...RIP Amy...
nice to see the all-time annoying American stereotypical comment made by the all-time annoying American stereotype still finds itself breathing in these times....
Don't know where you're at with that comment, but assuming you have a couple of early Midnight Oil videos added into your favourites, I'll assume you do know better. :)
I do know better as I have been enjoying Midnight Oil for over 25 years now. We Yanks are not all Bush supporting idiots. But you can't tell me munggirl's description of life isn't also a bit stereotypical?
I wouldn't know coz I am 31 and was a tad too young to really remember 1980. With an educated guess, I'd say it was a typical lifestyle for young Australians who were not studying, not living overseas, not living a life of sobriety and not listening to any other band but Midnight Oil. Australian pub culture was potent around the time this song came out, so it is possible that many young Australians at this time needed nothing more.
@munggirl Best comment I have ever seen on this group or on YouTube. I'm not from Australia or that era and so I envy you. The Oils are so cult and they play the best rock the world's ever heard. Good on you, grrl!
@munggirl Could not have said it better...ahhhh memories of the OILS at the Narrabeen Antler...booze...sweat...headbanging and not a care in the world. What happened because it seems that our generation bone headed politicians have fucked the place up good and propper ...they should be punished!!
i wonder that too... god that was a shit song. i didn't even buy the album that came off... whatever it was called... 1993 was pretty much the end of my love for the Oils. I really do wonder what 1980 Midnight Oil would have thought about what they'd sound like in 13 years time. My God, why couldn't they keep the mentality and creativity they had at 25.
I'd say they peaked in the 10-1, Red Sails era. Lots of energy but far more creativity in their music than the earlier simpler stuff. Redneck Wonderland was high energy angry stuff. Even the very lame "Capricornia" had to songs to be proud of "Luritia Way" and "Tone Poem". People mellow, bands mellow. They had a great, respectable run.
I think their last great album was Diesel and Dust. I love pretty much everything from 1977 to 1987. As far as their music goes after '87, I recognise that they still wrote some good songs, but they no longer rocked like the classic Oils did in the early 80s.
I think their best album after 1987 was Earth, Sun & Moon. Some of the tracks I didn't like at all, but I think it was an interesting album. I don't know why people like Blue Sky Mining, I think that is an ordinary album to be honest.
Renaissance Man was a great track off of Earth and sun and Moon as was Feeding Frenzy, My Country, Truganini and Drums of Heaven. However, BSM is, in my opinion far from ordinary. The title track. River Runs Red, King of the Mountain and One Country are very powerful songs.
AWESOME!!! Donnie Stherlands SOUND UNLIMITED on saturday Morning, Pulling a cone after breakfast as the Oils came on. "Crank that up" Head Injuries Indeed!
Sitting here looking at classic Australian songs/clips from 1980, This one of course, The Scientists, The Sports, The Reels.... A true golden age....sigh
sold out? This man has been singing about his ideals and now he's trying to realise them wherever he can as a politician, if you call that selling out......., then i'll rest my case
no he joined the liberal party or the labour party or who cares or gives a shit, fuck all we know is he turned his back on some of the things he believed in and hence Sold out
Sorry I just read my previous post. Stupid me, it was'nt the icebergs but the Bondi Livesaver down in Ebley st, which was shut down when they built Easgate. DOH!
As a young man my brothers and our friends traveled around to the true rock venues that dotted the Sydney rock scene. The Stage Door Tavern, The Sydney Cove Tavern, Selinas, The Bondi Icebergs,The Seals Club. Entrance was around $2 and a VB cost.75cents. The main acts were, The Oil's, The Angels, The Radiators, Jimmy and The Boys,Cold Chisel, I think AC/DC were on the scene as well.
This band had essence. Lyrics. Music. Melody. I miss it. I'd like very much to wake up one day and have the notice that they come back to play again around the world. The nowadays bands are true trashes.
MIDNIGHT OIL FOREVER!!!
Hey, KH198: "The deepest cancer of world is called businessmen/women. Politicians don't have the same power that them.
Goddamnit, why do we fuckup everything for money???
I used to cruise through Victoria on moonlight nights with me mate Philter, headlights off, Oil blasting, the old EH panelvan singing... th' only thing we broke was the speed limit... o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
Are you sure you only broke the speed limit? We fuck it up because we haven't learned any better, we think we know better...when we don't. We think we know it all, with age we learn.
Man, I like that song a lot! It's one of my MidOil's favourites. Brings me really good memories from the 90s. Yeah, yeah, I know the album is from 1979 but I first heard their music in 1990. It was nice to see that video here in YouTube. Thanks for posting it.
Like the equivilant of Headbanging American Heavy Metal
Australian Pub Rock
like munggirl said you feel the raw energy everytime you hear midnight oil songs they have the great just fuck its hard to explain you can feel the charge and viberance and its just damn
its to bad these days i reckon the 70's and 80's were the best years in Australia although myself still being young you could just relax and throw a midnight oil LP on and forget about everythin
28 years ago this band appeared I saw them Royal Anteler,Wanda, Capitol,Live,Narrra, Sydney. They were the best live act!! The Angels were there only competitors U lived for NOW U didnt give A SHIT FOR TOMMOROW! U PARTIED HARD!!! The pub rock scene in Sydney was live, raw, energy, I miss it. U only thought of your next drink. The next gig. the next venue. And how many oncores u could get from the band. That is what makes Aussie bands special. They deliver.
Les mélodies de Midnight oil ont ce pouvoir étrange de m'emporter vers des dédales obscurs où plane la folie. Provoquent des sensations mélées d'euphorie de dégout du pouvoir et de passion !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome. I saw the Oils at Memorial Drive in Adelaide in 1991. I was 16 and they changed my life. I had swatted up on everything Oils going into the concert...even watching an old video copy of the Goat Island concert my Dad had taped off the telly 6 years earlier in 1985. I remember going absolutely mental when they played this song. I was second row centre. One of their best.
!!! I was at Goat island too ... I won a ticket via a radio promo. I wasn't near the front, but cutting loose half way up the hill. That Oils concert was special.. I can still feel it.
Midnight Oil could have been the greatest band ever if they had Guy Sebastian or Shannon Noll as a leadsinger. Not some bald-fuck who put everything into his performance, looked like a freak and had a voice you could recognise.
That's ridiculous. Go visit his myspace. Wikipedia says Garrett quit band in 2002 to refocus on political career. In 1984, Garrett ran for Australian Senate under Nuclear Disarmament Party banner, and narrowly lost after recount! He won seat at 2004 General Election for the Australian Labor Party and was selected Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Heritage and Arts. November 2007, Labor Prime Minister elect named Garrett Minister for Environment, Heritage and Arts.
I love all the Oils bassists. But you simply don't get in that band unless you're a shit hot musician to start and as a bassist I have to say Bones is as good as they come. No disrespect to Giffo, a true and original talent, but Hillman stepped into his shoes nicely and has one of the best backing voices in rock to boot! Oh yeah, and he IS a bloody nice guy!

the oils were one of the dominat bands on the australian circuit
this was when all u needed to get into gig was shorts and a pair of thongs and a sin glet
before random breath testing
when u lived and got wasted for today
and didnt give a stuff about tommorow
i pity u poor bastards who have to put up with all the rules and BS of today

Joyfullmask 2 years ago
iTS NOT in the past 'mate'..the problems are still very relevant today..clearly you are just another ignoranty ey?? yes,its true, our ancestors and government are to blame, mainly, but its also important for people to 'recognize' this situation.and the situation IS still bad..many of them living in dire straits poverty..but i guess u dont care hey as you sit back and drink your VB of a nite? its not in the past pal and i suggest u change your racial opinion and show some heart.
TJnomadi 2 years ago
I aint gonna chanmge my ways mate why should i feel bad there in dire straight maybee they should get off there ass and get a job or live as there ancestors did why is it our job to make them live better its up to each individual to live there life if they cant get a job thats tough luck i wouldnt ask for a hand out and they shouldnt either its up to a person to make something out of there life not a country
Joyfullmask 2 years ago
bit hard for them to make something of their lives when the government does fuck all to help. they cant get decent jobs due to discrimination and lack of education..if you knew anything about Australian history and politics, then you would know that howard fucked a lot up for 'our indigenous people. look to NZ for how their natives(maoris) have claimed decent recognition and rights..very hard for a person to 'make something' of their lives when the opportunities are very limited!

Fuck multination lets be honest my oppinion matches problly the majority of australian born and australian parented people now you being a "political correct "person feal it nessesary to bring up teh abo's and there strife and how its not there fault the australian people should help them and well fuck that i aint gonna lift one finger to help anyone basic line is you take care of yourself look out for number one the abo;s got to do it you got to do it everyone should do it look out for your own

the oils were all about political issues..not just a bogan rock band for bogan flanalet fans ;)
TJnomadi 2 years ago

ProlongedSunlight 2 years ago
ProlongedSunlight, one useful thing Garrett has done is show us that - A person can desire to make the World a better place, but as soon as he/she goes into the political arena, all the GOOD they desired goes straight out the window. Everyone knows politicians are liars. They serve big business, not the people. Politics comes from the word 'Poly', which means many, and the word 'Tic', which are blood sucking parasites. POLITICS = MANY TICS.
ghosttroop 2 years ago 7
@ghosttroop perhaps some politicians are not liars & actually try to do some good. & perhaps some of these people serve the people not the corporations. think about the way you think, then you might just perhaps see our world in a more positive light...RIP Amy...
vaikasas17 7 months ago
@vaikasas17 Perhaps politicians want to do some good...but do they? POLITICS = Poly (MANY) + Tics (BLOODSUCKERS).

I do know better as I have been enjoying Midnight Oil for over 25 years now. We Yanks are not all Bush supporting idiots. But you can't tell me munggirl's description of life isn't also a bit stereotypical?
Tubernaut 2 years ago
I wouldn't know coz I am 31 and was a tad too young to really remember 1980. With an educated guess, I'd say it was a typical lifestyle for young Australians who were not studying, not living overseas, not living a life of sobriety and not listening to any other band but Midnight Oil. Australian pub culture was potent around the time this song came out, so it is possible that many young Australians at this time needed nothing more.

I think they'd probably vomit and never be able to look one another in the eye again.
drew1974 2 years ago
i wonder that too... god that was a shit song. i didn't even buy the album that came off... whatever it was called... 1993 was pretty much the end of my love for the Oils. I really do wonder what 1980 Midnight Oil would have thought about what they'd sound like in 13 years time. My God, why couldn't they keep the mentality and creativity they had at 25.
nzoz1980 2 years ago
Fair enough,
but you've gotta keep trying new stuff - otherwise you end up looking like Keith Ridhards

theres a difference in trying and failing, and continuing to go on in the wrong direction...

truespyfan 2 years ago
I'd say they peaked in the 10-1, Red Sails era. Lots of energy but far more creativity in their music than the earlier simpler stuff. Redneck Wonderland was high energy angry stuff. Even the very lame "Capricornia" had to songs to be proud of "Luritia Way" and "Tone Poem". People mellow, bands mellow. They had a great, respectable run.
JeffChristopher 2 years ago
The Golden Age was a great track off of Capricornia.
Tubernaut 2 years ago
I think their last great album was Diesel and Dust. I love pretty much everything from 1977 to 1987. As far as their music goes after '87, I recognise that they still wrote some good songs, but they no longer rocked like the classic Oils did in the early 80s.
I think their best album after 1987 was Earth, Sun & Moon. Some of the tracks I didn't like at all, but I think it was an interesting album. I don't know why people like Blue Sky Mining, I think that is an ordinary album to be honest.
drew1974 2 years ago
Renaissance Man was a great track off of Earth and sun and Moon as was Feeding Frenzy, My Country, Truganini and Drums of Heaven. However, BSM is, in my opinion far from ordinary. The title track. River Runs Red, King of the Mountain and One Country are very powerful songs.

What can I say about this? Plenty.
