My grandfather, George H. McRae was assigned to battery 4. Seaman Second Class. His job was the raising and lowering of the gun.

By todays standards note just how SLOW the state-of-the-art heavy batteries are able to assemble and direct fire.

They were siege weapons only able to assault massive FIXED defenses.

BTW, 18 inch British railroad rifles were abandoned in the retreat to Dunkirk!

They were legacies from WWI.

Subsequently, railroad heavy guns were abandoned for the remainder of WWII by England and America. ( BTW -- always Navy manned.)

One of my great uncle told me that he did remember ' bloody big guns on trains' in the great war, maybe these.

The Germans DID start WW1 by invading Belgium!! If they had not it would have been an 'just' Eastern European war.
