This 'tutorial' is meant for people that are already quite advanced. Then you pick up the strum pattern + cords a lot faster. Try easier stuff first.

Free strumming: improvisations are in the D chord and Em chord. for D chord, D twice (d,u,d,u) and notes B and C. for Em, play notes B,E,F#,G. For syncopated muted strumming, improvisations are in G chord: the melody is G,A,B,F#,G. Watch his little finger and the G shape, its different.
