I live in Germany and I can tell you the system here works very well, BUT, we pay monthly a part of our earnings, and our employers the other part to the various
Healthcare Companies. There are various levels of coverage. We can choose to pay more and be " privately insured" which would increase comfort in a clinic . People who are unemployed may NOT be turned away from an ER. That would be a scandal. Generally our Tax system includes such people as there are always those who cant pay.
Thats the point, public health care should only include ER cases. Canada is a great example of how public healthcare works well and horribly at the same time. As far as ER is concerned, it is excellent, you are in a car accident and are dying, ER will take care of you, no charge. But the problem is with the rest of public health care, where it fails miserably (long lineups for simple x-ray, waiting 2 years to get cancer checked out, when its too late etc. etc.)

The NHS since 1997 has gotten better and better its not perfect but no health care system is, you can even use your national insurance contributions to top up a private plan and healthcare is actually much cheaper in the UK and drugs are much much cheaper than they are in the US and even Canada!

What about this: A person is on the health plan, goes to the doctor, and the doctor prescribes something improper like Prozac, Ritalin, abortin, vasectomy, electroshock, flu vaccine, RFID chip "to streamline medical records," or some new concoction containing who-knows-what. The patient refuses it. The government kicks him off the plan, saying that refusal of "treatment" will make him sicker and cost more money. Now, with no health plan, they put him in jail until he accepts it.

Fix the health care system by not alowing lawsuits for one. two get insurance out of the industry.. I had real good health care plan. It was $500 deductable plus the monthly fees.. had an MRI over $5000to insurance! Lost my job and need an MRI cash price is $350! I dont even pay a monthly fee or deductable!! Insurance getting involved makes it insane to get health problems fixed.

I do agree with you that healthcare should be made much more affordable, but full on government takeover of the healthcare system is asinine. Furthermore, your argument that we are 50 years behind the rest of the world is false, America is at the front line of virtually every medical breakthrough, and IS second to none in terms of quality, and quantity of care. We seem to be choosing between the European style of rationing (which Michael Moore applauded in Sicko) as opposed to the current system which can deny care on the basis of pre-existing conditions (even if we've paid for insurance). The fact is competition does NOT always create a better product, especially when the insurance companies have been allowed to write this bill. In either case we don't see free enterprise. I live in Germany and I can tell you the system here works very well, BUT, we pay monthly a part of our earnings, and our employers the other part to the various
Healthcare Companies. There are various levels of coverage. We can choose to pay more and be " privately insured" which would increase comfort in a clinic . People who are unemployed may NOT be turned away from an ER. That would be a scandal. Generally our Tax system includes such people as there are always those who cant pay.

Thats the point, public health care should only include ER cases. Canada is a great example of how public healthcare works well and horribly at the same time. As far as ER is concerned, it is excellent, you are in a car accident and are dying, ER will take care of you, no charge. But the problem is with the rest of public health care, where it fails miserably (long lineups for simple x-ray, waiting 2 years to get cancer checked out, when its too late etc. etc.)

alex is wrong about the tax in the UK,its worse than what he said,we pay 20% tax on our salary,then on top of the 20% we pay national insurance tax & this is another approx 10% that goes on health care,so in essence we salary in tax,then everything we buy has VAT(value added tax) on it & this is 17.5 %,thats everything that gets sold has that on it,also we are paying £1.10 a litre of fuel which is approx $1.85 a litre so its about $8.00 a gallon roughly ,about 75% of that is tax as well

The NHS since 1997 has gotten better and better its not perfect but no health care system is, you can even use your national insurance contributions to top up a private plan and healthcare is actually much cheaper in the UK and drugs are much much cheaper than they are in the US and even Canada!
