I love Hamill's Joker... just wouldnt have fit into the context of the film. As Nolan said - he wanted to follow the story, and that their 'spin' on the Joker fitted the mood. The good thing about the character is - it's adaptable. Cartoon. Burton-esque. Or otherwise.

This is all true, but Mark Hamill had made the animated Joker famous. Now, I honostly thought even before he died that Heath was going to be fantastic. He caught the very essence of the Joker from the comics, where Hammil had to play down because it was an animated cartoon show.

In short, Hamill is the animated Joker, and Ledger is the film Joker.
