not to minimize the effort but really towing into this wave is a huge advantage- usually the most critical phase of surfing is the line up paddle and then pop up- these guys are towing into the wave and are moving at the same spped as the wave, haven't had to really worry about the drop in and then its just a matter of don't hang a rail. paddling into this wave is the heavy part.
still if you screw up even on a tow in you can really get worked..

Laird does the ultimate in surfing by finding, challenging, & conquering the biggest & most dangerous waves on the planet. He is also surfing's greatest innovator ever.
Slater is unquestionably a great surfer but his "tricks" on far smaller & less life threatening waves pale in comparison to Laird's achievements. I'm not aware that Slater has ever contributed anything of an innovative nature to surfing. If he has it certainly is of lesser note than Laird's.
I dont know much about surfing. But I feel Laird Hamilton's surfing has the science, techniques, arts and above all the the fearless spirit given by God himself.

I think you can say that Kelly Slater is better than Laird. Kelly is backed up by 9 world titles and has proved himself in the big wave realm by surfing and winning the Eddie and he has towed in at jaws. The world tour is hard and it takes a certain skill to know how to play that game to win.
Laird chose not to go the pro tour route, so Kelly's 9 titles shouldn't matter in this discussion. I'm sure Laid could've won some titles had he gone down that path. That being said, they both charge hard, they're both gnarly watermen, but they're 2 completely different types of surfer.

Hamilton surfs all sized waves; you should see him in small surf on a longboard. It's insane. He makes a living surfing big waves, so that's what everyone sees. His conceptualization of the wave from top to bottom and from start to finish is better than anyone else, even Slater.

What? You are kidding right? Laird is a BIG guy and he does an entirely different kind of surfing. The talent and ability of Kelly is so far beyond Laird. Laird may be the ultimate waterman, but Kelly is unreal. Watching what Kelly can do in less than perfect conditions seals the deal. A couple of years ago at Pipemasters when the waves were big but the wind was messing up the conditions I saw Kelly go backdoor on an insane ride. It was sectiony and bumpy yet he made it through three cover-ups.

Absolutely! Especially when it comes to competitive surfing. There ARE a lot of phenomenal free surfers out there. I've surfed many times the last couple of winters with Archy at Logs and his performance is inspiring! Fast, fluid, amazing timing and acceleration. Archy reads the wave with perfection. I love watching him surf and it is nice to have him living nearby.

OKAY wow seriously fuckers, They both two diff genres okay? Slater rides little 5-20ft waves with a bunch of tricks and turns, Hamilton cruises on big 30-50ft waves. In my opinion hamilton risks his life a 101 times more than fucking slater, but if it was for stricks, flips, and turns kelly would win. Simple as that.

All of the Greatest Surfers did Comps. Gerry Lopez, Curren, Thompson, Butch, Da Bull, Carroll, Nat Young, Nuuihiwa, M.R. , Pottz, Hakman, Sunny, Buttonz, the Ho's, ,A.I, Machado, Slater, it is crazy if you think about it. Too many of them to name. .So you when you pipe off about Corpo and for the soul. You are dismissing the most influential surfers of all time. Why did they compete, to give our sport legitimacy and to win!. They use to broadcast surung on ABC Wide World of Sports!

You know when I hear people ranting about Corpo B.S. At Least Slater surfs for a company started by surfers, ran by surfers. His biggest check comes from Quik. Lairds biggest check comes from AMex. But your right, the credit card companies are righteous! Gotta Love those APR's that change for no reason! Laird wasnt up for the compeition in the 80's but sure did pursue the righteous path of male modeling!

This is the stupidest argument ever. Dudes these are two different types of riding seriously it's like trying to compare ski-ing with snowboarding or park to freestyle Slater is the king but laird is too. I'm sure they don't even class themselves in the same genre of riding. There's no point even trying to fight about this. Here's a little secret for you. Any real surfer surfs for waves-FACT. Not a medal, not a women, not for money they do it for the rush of riding waves. I'm assuming you surf so i ask you why do you surf????? i've been surfing and bodyboarding for many years and i do it for fun and thrills. Let me get right to the point. All you wannabee never surfed a day in your life losers need to keep quiet. Laird hamilton is a god compared to slater. Laird was surfing 30-60ft waves when kelly was playing with g.i joe toys. It amazes me how many wannabee kooks think they know surfing .LMAO. As far as 9 titles go gimme a break a surf comp has so many luck factors that are out of your control like what wave you catch also the judges are people with opinions and opinions can be persuaded.

I cant believe this is even up for discussion... Slater is easily the best surfer on the planet! Laird didnt do contests because he would get killed. If you want to get best all around surfer....Then Dorian kills Laird...He's gone bigger...He's towed gnarlier....He kills it at 2 feet to whatever the ocean throws at him...People jock Laird because hes so marketable...If Laird looked like Machado or Dorian....He wouldnt have a Amex commercial or be on 20/20.

I think you can say that Kelly Slater is better than Laird. Kelly is backed up by 9 world titles and has proved himself in the big wave realm by surfing and winning the Eddie and he has towed in at jaws. The world tour is hard and it takes a certain skill to know how to play that game to win.

Laird chose not to go the pro tour route, so Kelly's 9 titles shouldn't matter in this discussion. I'm sure Laid could've won some titles had he gone down that path. That being said, they both charge hard, they're both gnarly watermen, but they're 2 completely different types of surfer.

Laird's a beast, but Slater can hold his own in huge surf, too (he won the Eddie in 20+ ft Waimea). and he's from Florida, not exactly a big-wave mecca. And he's a much better tube rider than Laird. I have the utmost respect for Hamilton, but he surfs like a statue. no style

Slater wins. No contest. Of course he rips huge waves too - he got second place at the Maverick's contest - THE FIRST DAY HE EVER SURFED THE PLACE. Plus he's humble about it all, Lance Burkhard - not so much. Burkhard does have giant huevos, however, no argument there.

Hamilton surfs all sized waves; you should see him in small surf on a longboard. It's insane. He makes a living surfing big waves, so that's what everyone sees. His conceptualization of the wave from top to bottom and from start to finish is better than anyone else, even Slater.

those of you who criticize laird of being just a big wave rider dont know a thing about laird...ever watched endless summer 2? laird is a true waterman he has set records of paddle boarding, he windsurfs, and another important thing he does surf smaller waves and its apparent when you watch him that he is up there with professionals...im sure whoever said he can only surf big waves has only seen clips of him riding big waves and nothing else

What? You are kidding right? Laird is a BIG guy and he does an entirely different kind of surfing. The talent and ability of Kelly is so far beyond Laird. Laird may be the ultimate waterman, but Kelly is unreal. Watching what Kelly can do in less than perfect conditions seals the deal. A couple of years ago at Pipemasters when the waves were big but the wind was messing up the conditions I saw Kelly go backdoor on an insane ride. It was sectiony and bumpy yet he made it through three cover-ups.

huh? Mad titles? Not a chance. Doesn't believe in wct? He never could have qualified. But Laird has been smart to stick to the kind of surfing he does. Curren was always my surfing hero, but Kelly has raised the sport of pure surfing to a whole new level. What Laird does is completely different.

Both these guys are better than me, but I believe that I could one day do a lot of what Laird does, but Kelly's surfing is so far beyond anything I have ever been able to do. Absolutely! Especially when it comes to competitive surfing. There ARE a lot of phenomenal free surfers out there. I've surfed many times the last couple of winters with Archy at Logs and his performance is inspiring! Fast, fluid, amazing timing and acceleration. Archy reads the wave with perfection. I love watching him surf and it is nice to have him living nearby.
