  • one of my favorite pieces for classical guitar by far.

  • Just unbelievable how he makes all voices sing !

  • A beautiful piece brought to life by a master. Too bad Fisk and Yamashita have lost their musicianship...if they ever had it.

  • @Knocktua Have to agree with you on that.

  • "Hey, hey Paul... I want to marry you!" Anybody else recognize it?

  • Only Perfect

  • im curious does anyone know what kind of strings they used back or type of guitars they used back in segovias time when he was a young man or is it pretty much the same ?

  • @mastertrasher666 When he was young he used gut strings I think. I read somewhere that he was one of the first classical guitar players to use nylon strings. He even helped to develop them according to the article.

  • @Ugallardo oh really? interesting =) i gotta look more into this =P but thanks for the info i appreciate it

  • does anone know where to get the music...or perhaps tablature

  • @ereherats you could try classtab.org there's a ton of good (and rare) classical guitar music there in tab...if not you can learn it by ear right here (the melody is clear and the chords are really easy) won't take long (much faster than using tabs) give yourself 20 - 30 minutes..remember your not learning the entire vid because a section repeats.Best wishes!

  • Really puts in perspective the talent of this guy when you see him play it live

  • Segovia playing Manuel M. Ponce is probably the greatest contribution Mexico and Spain have ever made together to the world. I simply float when I listen to stuff like this.

  • Muchas gracias.

  • It´s almost 1 AM and now I´m going to sleep with this wonderful soundwaves still bouncing in the hollow space between my ears...

  • que guapo

  • Nice one!!! Thanks for the post, Good to see the Master at work.

  • Bravo!

  • Espetacular!

  • speed in guitar playing is impressive but it's not just 'speed ' that makes a guitar piece ear candy ....it's the way the notes are sounded , approach , fade , rest....For me , it is much more enjoyable when the music becomes the vehicle and takes you along on a journey .... Segovia is one of many artists who do just that

  • what a peaceful sound, if god plays a guitar, it must sound like this

  • These kinds of videos are what keep me going! Some don't seem to like the sound quality, but I think that kind of vintage lo-fi recording brings out the best in Segovia's sound; and this video is one of the best examples. Just imagine this video being recorded with some high end condenser mic...just wouldn't be the same. 2:28 when the camera shows the fireplace...I got chills. Thank you Segovia for persuading Ponce to write so many beautiful pieces for the guitar!

  • this is segovia tone

    bravo

    but bad mic (>-<)

  • GREAT!

  • His expression is outstanding. Hats of to the Master.

  • Wow! This is MUSIC and not guitar-music only......

  • A really moving piece and a perfect execution. Its "simplicity" makes it beautiful.

  • Superb.

  • Master of Masters. Unforgettable!

  • @icarokar really? haha

  • @davinci0524 yep :-) Was a natural born teacher.

  • He is playing a Ramirez guitar, and he is playing it the way no one else ever has or will, because how did Shakespeare phrase it? We shall not see his like again.

  • @nickyzorro While it is true, he was a tremendously great guitar player. I don't I'll ever get that good. But it really bugs me when people say that we will never see anyone like him again. That's a phrase that can be applied to anyone, whether they be a guitar master or a piece of crap player. Sorry, I've just been in rant mode lately.

  • does anyone know which of his guitars he is playing here?

  • @echoman123456789

idk, what did he own apart from the famous Hermann Hauser?

  • in these years he used a germany guitar HAUSSER

  • Agustin Barrios is the true master of the poetic guitar

    Segovia? hmmm not even close

  • You don't compliment a musician by insulting another. Leave your comparison at the door.

  • @davinci0524 ulol

  • old school new school

we all had to learn some where

new learns from the old masters

classic is the learning point appreciate

  • segovia -- the master.

  • the best!

  • Absolutely catchy!

  • Nice crib.

  • just kickin it old school

  • In this piece I can hear an interesting similarity of Ponce and Llobet. Love them both, played and recorded pieces of both of them.

  • Why yes...yes he is the greatest... I'll be that good one day.

  • he really is the greatest isn't he.....?

  • technique and dexterity comes with a lot of practice...These masters of classic guitars practiced a lot! Master Segovia, you'll always be the great!

  • This is it.

  • Wow! Beatiful! Beatiful! Hermoso de verdad... Andres Segovia es grande....

    Venezuela...

  • fantastic expretion and tone produccion with grat emotion and understand the obre

  • Comment removed

  • All is "technique" - not to be confused with dexterity.

  • the only problem with that statement is that his technique requires dexterity

  • Thanks for your comment.

I meant that technique is not limited to fast fingers. Andres Segovia's interpretation of JSB's Chaconne, also available on YouTube, where he demonstrates his command of colors, timbres and volume range, his ability to keep concurrent melodic lines separate, illustrates this rather nicely.

  • why cant he have both? I believe it is possible to use technique to express an expression (lol that sounded wierd

  • Which why I used the - rather ugly - term "dexterity". How can you "express" anything worth listening to without the technique of a master?

  • Exactly, otherwise it would just be yet another person randomly strumming a guitar with no coherent thought or pattern. I see what you mean now.

  • Damn now i gotta learn this now!!

  • my thoughts exactyl! Fucking awsome song

  • giiuu :S

  • Excellent!

  • barrios > segovia

    FACT!!!

  • this was beautiful and sad

  • DjoesueD,

This is a movement from a larger work called Sonata III. It is the second movement of three. It shouldn't be too hard to find.

  • This is magical. Where may I find the music sheet for this song?

    R.I.P Master Segovia

  • It's from Manuel Ponce's sonata III. Schott sells a good version the complete sonata.

  • the best.

  • He sure was close to that fire. I'm surprised

the Ramirez stayed in tune, mine wouldn't have.

At least his back was nice and warm.

Truly the patron saint of the guitar for all of us to admire and honor.

  • It's a case of bad mic-ing, I think. That, and poor sound quality, which is expected. I doubt Segovia would mess up something as simple as dynamics...

  • @Grooviliciousness yeah i hate when people who hear bad quality or over distortion(if it being electric metal guitarist like Nile they are bad for over distortion for demo stuff but are amazing guitarists) and then automatically say its sloppy guitar work

PAY ATTENTION STUPID i swear some people have no ear for music!

  • Andre Segovia.... a GOD's gift to mankind.

  • How wonderful!

  • If one man made an honest living out of the instrument it was Segovia.

  • Thanks......... only once!

  • Magnifique interprétation du Grand Ségovia

    Ryorda

  • Just Brilliant!!!!!!

  • Legends only come once.

  • lol! some d*ckweed tries to give cobain props here!!! LOL! you made my day!

  • I love Segovia's playing at slower tempos and on evocative/elegiac/atmospheric pieces such as this. Marvellously soulful and really shows off his range of tone.

  • such a lovely music and you lot of idiots just spend the time talking shit

  • yea segovia is amazing and a much better guitarist. Classical Guitar is TRUE TRUE music, and it take s a great talent to be good at classical...but u gotta give cobain credit

  • are u comparing master segovia with kobain? hahahahahhaha...he can't play guitar for shit..

  • Ok, ok...you have got to be joking. You have to be. Only logical explanation. You can't seriously think that Cobain has anything in common with the grand-master of classical guitar.

  • Christopher Parkening, (who once studied with Segovia before putting his own mark on the Guitar world), would probably be as close as possible to being known as the best Classical guitarist after Segovia.

The Romero brothers (Angel, etc) are great too.

  • I would have to agree with you McRat. Too bad there's not many candid performances like the many Segovia left us.

  • Parkening ? No.. Bream, along with Williams and Baruecco

  • Julian Bream? :) Yes, certainly. John Williams, definitely too.

I did not mean to exclude them; but Parkening came to mind first as I was writing because he had studied under Sevogia himself before embarking on his own marked career back when.

  • Sorry, but you must be mistaken if you consider Williams to be as good as Parkening. Listen to his Villa-Lobos, where he changes notes to make it easier for him to play it. It's god damn pathetic, and not even a 12 year old guitarist would do something like that. Williams has not the slightest clue... Not only that, but Williams doesn't care about anything Segovia taught him, especially since he says that Segovia taught him nothing useful.

  • As far as I was aware most modern guitar pedagogues have discarded most of Segovia's styling and teaching. And to disparage John Williams' technique seems a little low. Even if you esteem Parkening as a better player I don't think you've given fair regard to Williams.

  • Someone who chooses (instead of learning the proper music and proper technique for playing it) to change notes around to make it easier for him to play should NOT be considered to be good. Especially if his playing is dry as chalk. Williams is highly overrated, and this is not even debatable, in my mind. I think you need to look more into Williams, beyond his technical clarity. There is more about him than meets the eye, and it's very dissapointing.

  • I value guitarists for how well they play a composer's music. Guitarists that take too much liberty with legato, phrasing, tempo, and tone do not honor the composer. Williams plays much to a composer's written script. I've never been disappointed by him.

  • If you don't know for yourself how much neglect Williams is responsible for with respects to the Composer's intentions, then you are not someone who knows the music you're talking about.

  • There is an absense of interpretation in Williams playing which makes him rather boring.Amazing techncally nobody would deny that. He would have made a great dentist.

  • LMFAO. You still have to give him credit for having technique. Hilarious but true.

  • I was going to debate you on williams untill you said it is not debatable. You are very authoritative on your bullshit.

  • Your comment cracked me up man. Got anything else?

  • Comment removed

  • ....I think there's less about him than meets the ear imo

  • I'm afraid I must agree with sab3156 John Williams is merely a tecnician! Little feeling or musicality and lack of tone. Julian Bream is streets ahead as a world musician with great feeling, tone and talent !

  • Get yourself an urtext edition of Ponce's music and read along as you listen to Segovia, then you'll see who taught Williams to change notes.

  • How about you figure out who influenced Ponce to write such music, and who was responsible for the music being played in the first place.

  • @sab3156 that would be Segovia

  • @aitkenjoshua This music was written for Segovia. He regularly wrote back and forth with Ponce when he wanted something edited. Get a book called the Segovia Ponce letters

  • @percey That book was so much fun to read! My teacher let me borrow it and I read the whole thing in like one sitting. You can really get a feel for what Ponce's life was like during all the ups and downs.

  • I do agree Parkening is fantastic, BUT at least Williams hasn't rested on his laurels like Parkening has since he retired the first time...talk about a shameful waste!!!

  • Amazing

  • he's got the touch

  • As always, enchanting.

  • BIG thanks for this historic video. A must for most guitar player.

  • Just beautiful music and tremendous talent. Great video of the master too. Definitely one of my favourites.

  • Buddybear, I can't agree with you more! I just love that fat man with the guitar. What a groove he was!

    Cheers,

    Dr. Gene Wong

  • Nobody since, or ever will be able to produce the nuance of tone colors Segovia did.
