...i've been watching the NHL for 20 years and vesa toskala was the single worst goaltender (starter) ive ever seen play at the NHL level. you finns can make believe jarkko ruutu and vesa toskala are great players, but the only person being fooled is you.

here's my observation:

both in person and from watching on television, vesa toskala was the most unimpressive and fundamentally flawed (he also appeared extremely lazy) goalie i have ever seen at the NHL level.

Toskala's problem is that he didn't have the consistency, stamina or endurance to play in a starting role for an 82 game stretch. When he plays backing another goaltender up or alternating starts, he plays better than some goalies in the NHL today. This has been proven on multiple occasions (See Nabokov, Kiprusoff, Raycroft). Sure he played for a highly skilled San Jose franchise, but he was also named Goaltender of the month in December of 2007 as a Maple Leaf, while sharing starts with Razor.
