I am a career bass player with 40 years professional experience and I just learned from you. Thank you for helping me find a couple mystery riffs that have been missing from my own rendition.
If you would be open to any advice, I would tell you that you need to anchor the thumb of your right hand. That's the only way you're going to get any power behind your playing. If you watch videos of John Entwistle playing, although his fingers are flying all over the place, his thumb is anchored and never moves too much. But that was very impressive. Good luck to you !!
Keep it up! alot of bass players these days don't like the classics because its to much work. Glad to see some younger people driving the bass and keepin it rockin!
Ggreat job ! Just a suggestion tho. Take the time to learn to read music. Its sooo worth it!! Learning to read will open doors that tabs just can't. You will have a better understanding of music in general and the fact you are so young and already doing what you are bodes well for a long and very satisfying future. Best of luck..as the old saying goes...the harder I work the luckier I get.
i think you would benefit greatly from investing a smaller bass, you could wear it higher and it would help develop your hand muscles in a much more constructive way. but great job!! keep practicing, and dont ever let anyone tell you what you cant do!
Nice!! The song because of which i PICKED UP the bass!! :-)) really Awesome. Maybe you should also try the bass for 'The Dirty Jobs' you'll love it :)
@vivek17s2004 same here. This and a few Zep songs - Always found Zep good for rhythm and Melody, Who also, then Maiden for speed and stamina. Wish I hadn't quit after 10 years of fun - sold most of my gear and never found a bass as nice as the '75 Precision I used to own. Still have a Washburn XS4 and an Epiphone T-bird but I'm so damn rusty.
You have great taste in music! Keep pursuing your dream and it will come true. You sound great and have obviously put in the time. Thanks for posting these videos!
I think if you stick at it, and keep practising, you've got a career ahead of you. It's quite obvious that you've put in a hell of a lot of work learning this song, just as a guitarist spends hours learning ''Stairway to Heaven" (guilty as charged), and it shows that you're willing to put the work in. Try emulating a selection of different bassists, and you'll create a style of your own without realising it. Great work!
check out Tal wilkenfeld who plays with the jeff beck group , best female bass player period you might be inspired ,pretty good job on "the ox"best bass player in the world
Just remember when you try and cover Entwistle, he was a classically trained musician and his first instrument was the French Horn. That is why Pete wrote their music so the bass and drums, traditionally rhythm instruments, played the actual lead. It was all because John and Keith were so unprecedented and so magnificently talented.
You have a great talent and obvious technical skill. Thank you for sharing this.
Concentrate more on the beat and the timing. It's no good playing lots of notes unless they are dead-on in-the-pocket. That is the bass player's first job. It's all about locking in with the drums and holding down the beat. Listen to AC/DC. Their bassist sticks mainly to the root notes, but the rhythm is fat and deep, makes you wanna move. Tons of people have been telling you you're doing great, which is fine, but you need to hear the truth, you need to find the groove and keep locked into it.
When I were your age, I were still listening to them Backstreet boys and Nsync! It would be another six years before I chanced upon The Who and was commanded by the spirit of John Entwistle to play the bass. Now I'm 21 and I've been playing steadily for 3 years and I've loved every minute of it!
Bloody good show ole girl. 12 yrs old? Good lord. Hope you are very proud of yourself. That was great. I love The Who, well done. One thing though, maybe turn it up a bit, wasa little low, knock it up to 11 maybe???haha!
Awesome job! When I was about your age, I started playing bass. I told some kids in my class about my new hobby, and they all laughed at me, saying "Girls can't play bass guitar!" and cruel things like that. They made me feel so embarrassed that I stopped playing. I regret giving it up, I wish I had kept playing even though they made fun of me. Hopefully your friends give you more support than I received, but even if they don't, don't give up playing! You are truly talented, way to go!
@beachcomber614 - @beachcomber614 - Oh no! Start playing again! If you love it, get back to playing. My friends and family completely support my love for the bass. The only negative remarks I get seem to be mainly on YouTube from males and usually ones my age. They never say the 'girl' thing, but they are the rude ones!!! :) I don't let it stop me, and you should't either. Get back at it!!
@tamnabo I plan to at some point! I need to actually go out and get a bass guitar, lol, and right now grad school takes up nearly 100% of my time. I'm much more confident than I was way back then (well, it was about 13 years ago), so comments from stupid people won't bother me anymore! But I'm really glad you have so much support, and are confident enough to ignore the negative comments!
@beachcomber614 Why the fuck did you do that girl.... Girls playing the Bass are awesome and smoking Hot these Days... you shouldnt care what others think about what you do thats what Rock 'N' Roll Is About not giving a damn about others opinions of what you do what matters is ur opinion and "I WANT YOU TO GET BACK TO YOUR BASS AND ROCK TO THE WORLD"
@pglewis25 - I learn/play and figure out songs by ear. I seldom find tabs that are accurate throughout a song but sometimes if I get stuck at some part, refering to tabs might get me in the right general direction!
WOW!!!! AMAZING!! Im a 34 year old woman just starting..been playing for 3 years! You're teaching me this song girl! WAY TO GO!! I'm totally impressed!
I've been wanting to learn this for ever!! THANK YOU! I'll let you know when I get it all down! LOVE YOU! Michelle
bloody hell-fancy picking entwistle to copy!!!!! i've been playing 30 years and the who's stuff is still scary to tackle.....the tone/feel is there though-keep on practicing.....
pretty good!! i've heard a few better covers but this is awesome considering your age and this song is difficult! work on perfecting the sound of it and make sure there are less mistakes but great job!!!
Fantastic - my favorite bass song/performance of all time. Entwhistle sounds like a 747 taking off 50 feet away. voom VOOM Voom... You did great covering it. This is one of my anti-depression songs. Wake up, switch it on, and TRY to keep your feet from moving happily. (Same with David Lee Roth's "Just Like Paradise".)
When this girl loses her timidity she's gonna play some Phat sounds. Of all the songs to pick by the WHO this is one of the more difficult entwistle masterpieces.
All little girls should learn the bass. Now she needs to get into some Squire or Stanley Clark.
Wow! Killer job. That is a great band to get in to as a bass player(I've been playing a very long time)My two cents? Look in to Gezeer Butler(Black Sabbath),Cliff Burton (Metallica),Less Claypool(Primus) I can't wait to hear you in your first band that hits it big!
Well done girl, this is one of my fave Who numbers (bassist myself for over 35 yrs & this is an infuential song for me) and you play it well. Heed StagfromTOS's comment tho, & wear it a bit higher for better access & control, but just keep on doing what you're doing coz you're doing it ok. & check out Jon Entwsle Band at Woodstock '99 posted by xaz77. Wish I could play half as well! THAT'S how to do it! Keep on picking! :-)
You're very talented, though i'd advise you to wear your strap a bit higher, it'll help you reach the higher frets easier and will generally give you more control of the bass. Don't wear it too high, however, or the bass will go horizontal and then you'll have difficulty playing the lower notes. Find a comfortable middle ground and you'll notice the difference.
Yep ericx777 I agree with you! Also as a vet... too. Part of playing a song is letting your emotion pour into every note. I don't know if this can be taught. Hey is that an Ibanez SG? Advice from a 30-yr vet...
Make the bass an extension of your soul... hard to explain but think on it for a while.
Also, get angry... don't let the instrument play you, YOU play the instrument. I know you're just starting out but "attitude" has a lot to do with "owning" the instrument.
Watch Billy Sheehan, Getty Lee and Jaco Pastorius for more inspiration and perspiration.
Keep at it... if you're into The OX, you're on the right path!
