What a "BEAUTIFUL" locomotive! I can still remember them in daily use everywhere back in the 1960's & 70's! Great engine, and with the SD9's & GP9's they killed off the Steam Engine. Thanks for posting!
i was up in this a few years ago...maybe 2003? anyway, i was younger and didnt know much but now im older im interested in what kind of hown it has....do you know?
nice video....as to steam generators, they were built with them, CNW rebuilt the locos for commuter service in chicago, part of the rebuild was replacing the steam gen with a modern HEPgenerator, they usually used a cummins VTA 1710 v-12 diesel. the "steamgen" water tank is actually the prime movers water tank- anyone notice what the water level was? these locos are for sale at the moment....
Btw, the crew gave a pretty good description of everything, hope that you listened. P.S. Don't pull the big red lever near the front of the prime mover.
You mean the layshaft manual control lever at the end of the injector control shaft? Of course I listened; I already knew everything that he told me. P.S. that was NOT a steam generator, like he said. There was a plate on the unit that said "Cummins Engine Co." These units were rebuilt with HEP. So, he was wrong about that.
Yeah, the "Big Red Lever" was a joke, and the layshaft is a very useful thing when an engine gives trouble starting on a cold night/morning. Thats a shame that the engine doesn't have a steam generator still, I know that engine probably did use to have one.
I do not think that CNW ever had steam generator-equipped F7's. The engineer's name is Jim Jacobs, and yes he did give a nice description of the equipment.
I remember riding the Gettysburg Railroad back when I was younger, being pulled by the -ex Western Maryland GP9 number 39. Although I've got to say that an F-unit fits this line. Excellent walk through of the Engine room.. Gotta love those roots blown prime movers.

The only thing the motor does is drive the generator, huh? What drives the air compressor? What provides hot water for the heaters?
