Hannibal is a bit overrated in my opinion. There's no denying his brilliance as a tactician, but as a strategist, he severely failed. He never had a successful campaign plan. He just roamed around Italy beating back armies until he ran out of supplies. He should have gone straight to Rome after Cannae.

Was Hannibal black? Not entirely, but yes it is very likely Hannibal's bloodline included Nubian blood. Like my ancestors, we are a hybrid race. I've admired Hannibal since childhood, and had an even bigger interest in Alexander the Great. Someday I'd like to write books about each of them. I appreciate you taking time to respond.

Hannibal is a bit overrated in my opinion. There's no denying his brilliance as a tactician, but as a strategist, he severely failed. He never had a successful campaign plan. He just roamed around Italy beating back armies until he ran out of supplies. He should have gone straight to Rome after Cannae.

I don't think his plans, whatever they may have been, were to "roam around" Italy aimlessly. One possibility was that he wanted the subdued Italians to rise up against Rome and launch an overwhelming attack against the city herself, something he never was able to do. Supplies is something he expected, or so it seems, from Carthage: it is possible he didn't even have the necessary...

Starving a city out can also be a risky move, as you leave yourself open to attack from behind and possibly a reprisal from the city itself, and there were armies larger and better equipped than Hannibals' around. It is clear that he did tremendous damage to Rome's land and agriculture, eventually causing the Gracchan Reforms, and if he had been able to continue his campaign...

In one of the villages though he was nearly killed and so he was saved by his officers and returned with his men home. Many historians see this as a turning point and as a psychological defeat for alexander. Others don't agree.

At night, when the city and its dwellers were celebrating, he attacked and killed all the men, women, old, young, children. At this battle, even women were witnessed picking up swords and fighting among their men to the death. Alexander was a great general, but not invincible, and not humane, either. This isn't taught in Western History, btw.

@mastana247 This sounds a lot like the Siege of Sangala, where the Indians were doing a good job of holding Alexander off, and he asked for terms. He then asked for a group of mercenaries to fight for him in his army, and so when they tried to escape, Alexander surrounded them and slaughtered them. However, the siege was far from a loss.
