This song is very moving and beautifully sung by Steve Lawrence! Right now with the precarious situation in Israel and so much anti-semitism STILL in the World, this song is very important. WE CAN NEVER FORGET THE PAST!!!!
This song is so moving...I am saving this to share on Kristallnacht next year...Kristallnacht is on November 9th and although I am Christian, my friends and I decided to send a piece of crystal to a Jewish friend on November 9th to repent on behalf of our ancestors not doing more during the Holocaust.
Written before WWII by Oscar Strock and S. Kortnayer, a Yiddish actor who died in Warsaw Ghetto. Johnny Mathis' version (in English) was recently re-issued on "Jewish Soul" (Hatikvah Music in Los Angeles). This compilation also has Tom Jones' "Yiddishe Mama" and Jay Black's "Vi Iz Dos Gesele," among others.
@KameaMedia You actually answered my question, but I also wanted to know, didn't Billy Eckstine or Nat King Cole also sing this? My dad had a 45 when I was little that we played all the time, and I'm trying to find it. But this is the song. Thank you for the info!
@1ster1 The only question is - to what extend your stupidity and ignorance can progress, although Einstein said that "only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former". You are the finest example of it.
@1ster1 It looks like you been educated by marxists and other leftist bums, who brain washed you big time. You are so stupid that even facts you take as propaganda. What a waste of life. You are the good company for ahhhmedinagad and his ilk. Get lost, idiot.
Albie Diner is doing holy work. The visuals accompanying this poignant song demand that we remember. I was born in Brooklyn, 1942, as millions of people of my background were being slaughtered. For many years the world turned its back.. My father sang this to me when I was young. Did Sammy Davis Jr. also record this song.? Leo Fuld gave voice to the Holocaust generation and the Jewish diaspora, who have sought safe haven for millenia. Albie Diner keeps the memories alive.
@FlorienBloem777 god hates Jews, coz they killed his son. and coz of that he sent his grand crusader Adolf Hitler to clean the world of them, but forces of evil where to mighty. Our time will come! and then Israel shall burn!!!
You see its easy to affirm god would love anybody or curse anybody. this aint my opinion i dont think so. but it was just an example to show you that the things you said, can be used in the same principe against you, so better shut up.
@sgreen71778 do you wish to bless those barbarians who have murdered yesterday four including pregnant woman too? They too "all people". "All people who celebrate afterwards this horrendous act. Shame on you.
Thanks for the "memory from the internet". My mum too was an English Jew from North London. Her mother tooke mom and my aunt to total strangers n the country to shield them from the London bombings. They all survived, and my mom moved to the US in the 50s and married my American father. Beautiful, thank you soooo much!
I keep coming back to view our History, whcih we must never forget! Steve is singing about the way it was...his Cantorial training really comes through. My Father's cousin's survived Auschwitz and the March, and eventually wound up in Israel. I heard the stories straight from them in Israel....... I have not been able to purchase the CD with this song on it....
It's sooooooo sad, i'm crying right now, thank you very much for posting this video, it's one of the best that I've ever heard.I will try to get this cd so I can listen to all his songs.
This song was played frequently in my home when I was growing up as my parents were big fans of Steve & Eydie. We all saw them at Valley Forge, The Latin Casino, and other clubs and they always put on a great show. Those days seem to be gone forever. I think that this is Steve's best recording, but there are several others that were wonderful as well. He waa a real performer and I loved Eydie also.
This is an incredible history of my great great grandparents and half of my great grandparent's family who never made it out of Hungary during the war. Over half were killed in the camps. I have watched and listened to Steve sing this hundreds of times. Never Again.......

Does anyone have recording of the Hatikva as sung in Bergen-Beltsen camp soon after its liberation. I'd like for someone to put it on youtube. It's an audio recording, I believe, so one can add whatever visual stuff is appropriate.

My Sear Mr Diner its very early here in Argentina but I woke up and wanted to thank you with affection for this fantstic video and interpretation Renee 725
What a wonderful document this video is! It is a historical masterpiece full of pictures that I have never seen! The song by Steve Lawrence is magnificent! God bless always the Jewish people who are the most talented and inspiring people in the world today and I suspect FOREVER!
My Grandparents knew where to go, to Argentina,a generous country, yours to the Us For freedom and success They did well and here I am moved, emotionally trying to share it with you........THANHS!!Renee
I haven't heard Steve Lawrence for too many years. Cannot believe the power, the tenderness, the sweetness, the timber of his voice...seems that he sure has improved with age. does anyone out there know if and when Steve and Edie are coming to South Florida
Yep, I agree whole heartedly! I was also at their concert at the North Fork Theater (formerly the Westbury Music Fair) on Long Island this past Saturday, November 3rd, 2007. They were fantastic! And this song was so moving. You're right about the standing ovation for this song....I got chills!!! And I'm a younger guy, being 54 years old, but am a devoted fan of Steve And Eydie. I wish I could see a video of their interview with Larry King from 2003; I've searched youtube but can't find anything.
I am 22 and I love them!! I was just there all three nights! AMAZING!! THIS WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG! More of an Eydie fan, yet this song def made me love STEVE!!
SAW STEVE & EYDIE AT NORTHFOLK MUSIC FAIR THIS PAST WEEKEND on LONG ISLAND. THEY WERE INCREDIBLE. WHEN STEVE SANG "WHERE CAN I GO" it brought tears to my eyes as he was FANTASTIC and the words were amazing. Steve got one heck of a STANDING OVATION that lasted more than usual. I cannot stop playing the SONG and looking at the VIDEO. If anyone has never seen them perform in person, do not hesitate to get tickets to their show
StTeve Larence performed this at his Westbury Concert and tore the house down! He told the audience that this was on U-Tube. Thank you for posting the recording and video.
It is unfortunate that the same political and economic climate that existed in Germany, exists in our country today. Greed creates Hate and racism and leads to fascism.
Struma was a ship chartered to carry Jewish refugees from Romania to British Palestine On February 23, 1942, with its engine inoperable, the ship was towed from Istanbul through the Bosporus out to the Black Sea by Turkish authorities with its refugee passengers aboard, where it was left adrift. It was torpedoed and sunk within hours by the Soviets on February 24, killing 768 men, women and children, with only one survivor
I will not forget nor forgive until my dying breath
In 1941, a Rumanian Zionist group chartered the Struma, a 74 year old ship formerly called the Macedonia. They took on about 769 immigrants and 10 crew. The charter was later transferred to a private firm for legal reasons. The Struma set out from Constanza on December 11, its passengers crammed into a 160 foot long ship meant for 100 passengers, in bunks stacked 8 to 10 high.

Thank you,Mr Albertdiner!
This is my favourite song! Are you like F.Kafka also?
Am Jiszrael chai!
lehava960 4 years ago
i have liked this song since I first heard
it in the 1960s. F. Kafka is a fascinating
personality with a vivid imagination.
Yet he had many personal problems he
could not overcome. People should have a
positive outlook on life.

BTW: FORGOT TO GIVE A RATING. AND I RATE STEVE SINGING "WHERE CAN I GO" EXCELLENT (+10 or better). I will get the hang of it!

I still have a few treasured 78 rpm discs of Leo Fuld, the only vocalist who sang Yiddish with a Rotterdam/Rumanian accent.

Thank you for informing of this tragic incident. It was the worst of times for the
jewish people.
albertdiner 4 years ago
tell me who chartered the ship?
paulagloria 4 years ago
In 1941, a Rumanian Zionist group chartered the Struma, a 74 year old ship formerly called the Macedonia. They took on about 769 immigrants and 10 crew. The charter was later transferred to a private firm for legal reasons. The Struma set out from Constanza on December 11, its passengers crammed into a 160 foot long ship meant for 100 passengers, in bunks stacked 8 to 10 high.
