Go Veggielution! It just makes so much sense! I especially like the idea of kids connecting with the whole growing process and learning where our food comes from.
Don't be such a sour-puss! Millions of people live in cities and they need local food. Urban agriculture is WAY more sustainable than importing food from far away via diesel guzzling trucks. Go Veggielution!
I shouldn't have stooped to name calling, but I don't think millions of people going to move to the country because it's more sustainable. Urban farming reduces the impact of city dwellers that have no other option for living situations. Not everyone can afford to buy land in the country. They will continue eating food, urban farming helps people stuck in cities to reduce their impact.
okay, let's say that theoretically you are correct. what is the future of cities? are they overall in a sustainable way? will a few gardens do anything to ameliorate a toxic and generally unhealthy lifestyle in the urban areas?
Yes. Urban farming does help. The average pound of produce served to Americans travels more than 1,000 to reach the plate. We can't overhaul the food system or move people out of the cities, but this project reconnects people with the land like they've never known. Many city dwellers are far removed from our roots and don't know the joy of the natural world. Getting people involved in urban farming will reduce the impact of the dominant food systems AND inspire people to leave the city.
what we need to do is pickup a piece of paper. Try. Detroit loves you!

that process is too slow. we need fast change because very tough times are coming. it's time to harvest the countryside.
