@chex383 I dont know shit about music theory, but I find that in creating trance melodys its just a matter of playing around. Lots of dropping keys by a couple of notes. C to A for example is a good one. Eg... p[lay C and E togeher, than switch to A and E. Really simple trance. You can create loads of melodys from this. For your bass therefore you would go from C to A... whilst playing a range of higher notes that sound 'right' tohether.

I still mix up techno and trance too at times, it is different though trance seems to have more soul to it, I like techno but I grew out of it, it became to kiddish. Cant sleep by above & beyond is a good song to check out btw.

I will have to disagree with you somewhat, I think most of the techno songs have no piano, but the ones have usually are really nice and they tend to be called TRANCE, because they are more melodic driven.
