Just FYI, the first album is self titled and the second is titled "Idlewild South" The first two were also re-released later together with the title "Beginnings". "Brothers and Sisters" and "Eat A Peach" came later. Enjoy.

I have often heard that artists and athletes have their best performances when nobody is watching. Greg Allman was just messing around during a sound check and we got likely the most emotional and perfect version of this song EVER RECORDED. They were also just playing Sweet Melissa right before they were asked to take 5 mins. Both songs to me express that inability to leave a woman you love ...

I feel as though the "chord mishaps as he comes to the bridge" add to the song ... He reacts to them emotionally and seems to punctuate the lyrics with a frustration very similar to the emotion expressed in the lyrics ... it's as though he's playing out on the guitar the dilemma in the song of not getting it right ...not understanding her ... and he seems to bellow in anger at that moment and several spots of the song ...

my mistake it's open G. Play an A7 shape on the 3rd fret and move it down to the 2nd then 1st. Alternating bass. You can take it from there. I tabbed it but it's too big to paste here.

Yes, I am a hippy and damned proud of it. You can tell when music is classic. It is loved by generations to come. gregg interviewed on late night radio once (remember when d.j.'s did that ?) and he said the riff to midnight rider came to him when the band was on a break (tech diffs?) and he got the studio janitor to sit and pick the riff while he worked out the rest.
