@jeffro99518 My cousin is afraid, too. She grew up on the 40-Mile River and her mother successfully frightened her from venturing out on the ice there.
No this is about an hour north of Anchorage, Fairbanks is another 260 some miles north of biglake i believe, i know its about a 6 hour drive from biglake to Fairbanks, I grew up there.
i went there last year!!! i flew from md to texas then 12 hour plane ride from huston texas to ancorage aslaka ! it is VERY pretty there and i would def recomend going there! but the only negative thing is the gas price.. it was nearly $5 around denali national park ! so watch out
Being scared is very good. If you don't drive on the same ice road every day you don't know how conditions are changing. We drive on I-5 (Ice-5) every day. When it's over four feet thick we are very safe. Once, though, the road split and one side for about a quarter mile went under water and the middle popped up as a ridge. A snowmachincer drove into the wet side and had to get help getting out. They flagged that section and just plowed a new road around the ridge.
I was watching somthing about the ice roads on discovery channel.I have an Uncle thats a truck driver!! im never gonna let him drive on those roads again..scary stuff!
I generally travel at 55 to 60 MPH. It's when you get close to shore that you have to slow down so the ice doesn't buckle up at the shore. I wish more people knew about that. We get some really big hummocks toward breakup and then the ice fractures there sooner than it has to and makes the road difficult to get on to or off of. I read about the wave physics in the book "Ice." Where did you hear about it?
she probably heard about it on the history channel . you guys are famous now. its the rave for all the truckers in the lower 48 they wish they could be ice road truckers. but some are super truckers in they're own right ,ice skating on pavement on interstates here is probably more dangerous than there. there you just fall trough ,here you do 360's and jacknife
good ol' big lake... I water skipped all the way across the lake this spring when the road your on was almost like a river, 2-3' of water on it... what a blast.
we have 2 cabins right off of big lake, and im just not brave enough to drive on it, was there today,, i wont even walk on it--scares me!!!

I have driven across that lake many of times. It's pretty safe depending on how thick the ice is.
