  • Fuck Ayn Rand. Always amazed at these "anti-authoritarians" who advocate for free market capitalism. sick.

  • @RecycledCinema Yes, those silly anti-authoritarians. What are they thinking supporting people's right to engage in acts of commerce between consenting adults? Truly whacky.

  • @SuzeraintyNow Wow, you should probably take a look at where unrestricted capitalism has brought us. If it were acts of commerce that didn't have devastating ecological effects on the entire populous, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. The IPSO (international Program on the State of the Ocean) just released yesterday devastating news about how over-fishing, pollution and climate change have shown mass extinctions of a once unimaginable proportion. This is one example among many.

  • @SuzeraintyNow The notion that Randian anti-altruism is going to possibly work on a mass level completely ignores the basis of human survival on a planet composed of a delicate ecological system. Rand was informed by a completely different context of capitalism, one that was essentially opposed to Marxism. Fine, but in the process she created a monstrous philosophy.

  • @RecycledCinema Three points:

1.) What we (any nation really) have now is far from the unfettered capitalism you imply.

2.) If ecological issues are your primary/only concern, then you'll find few arguments from libertarians. "Tragedies of the Commons" are well understood and accounted for in libertarian philosophy.

3.) If ecological impacts concern you, one way to mitigate them is to make the commons not common anymore. People treat their own property better than public property.

  • @SuzeraintyNow I have to address your third point first.

    3) How can you possibly have such irrational faith in corporations that they will act as stewards to land considering past behavior? Corporations act on the basis of a short term bottom line for profit production. In other words they will (and have) decimated their own resources for short term gains. Happy to offer examples. Aren't you the least bit concerned about the privatizing of resources?

  • @RecycledCinema First of all, it needn't be Corporations that own the commons, it could easily well be individuals. Secondly I'm not sure why it matters. Third, corporations that focus only on short term gains very quickly become ex-corporations.

I don't need faith in corporations, it's pretty well documented that private ownership tends to lead to better stewardship. For example, one of the only reasons we still have Buffalo in America today is because of private herds.

  • @SuzeraintyNow Explain to me why private owners wouldn't just sell their land instead of preserving it for public use?

  • @RecycledCinema I never said they wouldn't. Some would choose to sell it. Some would choose to keep it. They'll sell it to other private parties and as long as no coercion is involved on either side, I fail to see how anyone can reasonably object.

  • @RecycledCinema And now I've posted so many comments that YouTube thinks I'm a bot. :-P

Which is my queue to stop spamming YouTube comments.

    Have a nice night. :-)

P.S: Lindy, awesome tune. Sorry to drag your comments into Internet flamewar territory.

  • @SuzeraintyNow Point 1 and 2

    1) The way I see it, only a corrupt legal system has allowed for the punishment of malfeasant corporations now. The assumption that unfettered capitalism would solve the problem is unfounded and frankly naive. Are you implying capital has no effect on government judicial appointments?

  • @RecycledCinema This strikes me as not even wrong, just incoherent. You seem to be arguing against yourself. Corporations are being punished by the government despite the fact that completely corrupt the government? You seem to be contradicting yourself.

Secondly, I completely acknowledge that capital has a profound effect on governance, which is one why we should reduce the amount of power vested in government. Less government power effectively takes the teeth out of inevitable corruption.

  • @SuzeraintyNow That is a very interesting point, as in the notion that reducing governance reduces the political sway of corporations. But, it puts us into an ideological checkmate insofar as my point concerns the fact that the lack of government oversight is allowing for this to happen. My point was that governments have only vaguely punished corporations--with paltry and ultimately insufficient payouts. The gulf oil spill is a good example. Furthermore, even money can't pay for some things.

  • @SuzeraintyNow Point 2

    2) I have respect for libertarians, and yet I see it as an essentially agrarian philosophy which doesn't understand the nuances of urban life. More and more we are seeing a population shift from the rural to the urban and this seems to challenge libertarian ideals. I respect the notion of personal responsibility and yet I am repulsed by the inclination to ignore those who cannot fend for themselves. I am not a social darwinist.

  • @RecycledCinema And your implication that libertarians ignore those who can't fend for themselves is a strawman pure and simple. Many libertarians oppose government exactly on humanitarian grounds. Being a libertarian is perfectly compatible with strong belief in humanitarian ends and, in my experience, they in fact tend to go hand in hand.

As for the rural/urban distinction, I fail to see why libertarianism works in one situation and not in the other.

  • @SuzeraintyNow Look, I have many libertarian tendencies. I can't exactly say I have a firm ideological perspective, but it does acknowledge the failure of capitalism. I'm not advocating for communism, but I don't see how you orchestrate an independent body to oversee and support humanitarian projects without government intervention. Do you think charities are the answer? Personal contributions? I am doubtful that these could replace government.

  • @RecycledCinema Okay, you baited me into one more comment:

Suffice it to say, that yes I think that Charities are a big part of the answer. I don't think large central bureaucracies are needed and, in fact, I think they tend to make problems worse. They also make people feel absolved of their personal moral duties to their fellow human beings.

I think that individual and privately-organized charity are the answer.

    Nice talking with you, @RecycledCinema

  • @SuzeraintyNow Really nice talking to you too. Despite our disagreements, I feel honored to have met such a well spoken and thoughtful person in the dregs of youtube.

  • @RecycledCinema Thanks. I feel similar. This is definitely a topic about which reasonable people can and do disagree. Thanks for the stimulating conversation.

    And now, sleep.

P.S: Isn't "two people amicably agreeing to disagree about politics on the Internet" the 7th sign of the apocalypse or something? :-P

  • @SuzeraintyNow Well then the end is nigh. G'night.

  • @SuzeraintyNow Many of us city folk fear that the privatization of services wont result in good old capitalist competition, but in costly and poorly run services. This is contentious, because so many government controlled services are poor in the U.S. But I live in Canada (though am from the US) and have found that the privatization of public transit or the deregulation of ISPs has far more devastating consequences.

  • I love the tune Lindy, I hope it rises to depth of its content. Which is Very DEEP.... :) We need more songs to remind us of the Blindness we are accepting as, the way business is done. Thanks for Sharing.
