I can remember hearing this 28 years ago when i was 18 and i just blew me away. And hearing it again now, it still does. Its funny to think back to all the old friends who cringed and said "this sucks, Billy Squire rules !!!" I have to laugh and say "boy were you wrong" dumbass. Good bye guys the memories and music lives on forever. Oh, and where's Billy Squire these days
this album was recorded using only a 4 track tape recorder.....not like todays over polished, over produced music....talent is raw and fresh for the 80's it's cool!
I remember when Michael Stipe used to go to The Color Box (which changed its name to The Chameleon Club) in downtown Athens and dance without his shirt on and pick up gay boys to have flings with. Good times.
@nothingup123, This video was filmed in 1984 at the home of Reverend Howard Finster in Pennville, Georgia. Finster was a well known local folk artist in the area for many years. He built all of the whirlygigs that appear in the video. The elderly man in the video is Finster, I believe. He died in 2001.
Saw this on Night Flight on the USA network back in the day. I'd never heard of R.E.M. before, but I remember thinking "this is genius" and got the album asap. I was not disappointed.
I've always wondered: what would happen if you put Mike Buck & Mike Campbell (The Heartbreakers) together? Two awesome guitarists with very cool chording styles!
REM was so great in concert. Seen them a few times but the one I remember most was the Grand Ole Opry on the Life's Rich Pageant tour - they had to stop the show, and after conferring with some guy on the side of the stage, Michael got on the mic and in a very nice way, asked the people in the balcony to please stop dancing so the show could continue - you could see the cracks in the plaster around the edges, there was a genuine fear it might collapse.
Sorry, for Finster's art you need to see Radio Free Europe. This is R.A. Miller's art.
I took a folk art class at UGA back in those days '80-82 with Professor Art Rosenbaum (I was an art major with Michael Stipe) and we went to see both Paradise Garden and R.A. Miller's place, plus many other artists and musicians. It is one of my fondest memories from college.
the were so cool then. had a friend who went a private hs in athens in the eary 80's. i remember the first time i listened to chronic town. wow! when michael cut his hair, it went to shit!! lol
I remember reading a review of REM in Rolling Stone back in the day in which the reviewer wrote "now that we can understand what Michael Stipe is saying, we still don't know what Michael Stipe is saying"
@cultssuck He does have a point!! haaa.I just loved the harmonies and melodies on early REM tunes. This came out when i was 17 i believe-- my buddy Seth played it--the album, all day till i jumped into the hudson river with a rock ,threatening suicide!!!! hehe but seriously i had it so stuck in the cranium i was goin batty!
It was on USA network's "Night Flight" back in the 80's, that night I was introduced to REM with this video. Couldn't understand a word they sang but I loved it immediately.
Hey, thanks! Well, nice to meet another (not fan) but follower at heart of R.E.M.
They changed our lives, the one thing we could do to thank them is just listen to them, forever, as we promised the first time we heard one of their songs.
You're right, guschavoman, and that's what I'll do :)
You know, unluckily I was too young to listen to their music during the '80s, but I know if I wasn't I would have been a fan for sure. I discovered them at 13 and all I have done since then is just filling the gap... :) have a nice day!
My favorite band. This was such an important song for me. I was 15 when I heard it. At this point in my life I was trying to figure out who I was, so to speak. One way of defining myself was to look at what music would I pick. I liked many types of music, but none of them I would say completely described who I was as a person. Then one day I heard "Pretty Persuasion" for the first time. I started hearing other REM songs from that era, and I thought This is who I am.
I passed the same experience somehow. The first song I've heard from R.E.M. was The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite. I heard and I said: this is how I feel, the way I am, this is the only way. R.E.M. has been my favourite band since I was alos like 15. My first 2 albums were "AUTOMATIC" and "RECKONING". They are now my favourite 2 albums. No one could or can describe my feelings such as R.E.M. Also my favourite band. It changed my life, and I owe them so much.
I completely agree with you. They also changed my life and I owe them so much for what I am now. I wouldn't be as I am if I hadn't found out their wonderful music. They helped me so much since I discovered them in 1994, and it's impossible to descibe how good they make me feel every time I listen to their songs, no matter the album... I love them for their unique way of being and playing, I really think their music is a miracle.
The video was filmed in Gainsville, GA at R A Miller's whirlygig garden. R A worked in painted tin and is known for his whimsical whilygigs, angels and devils and 'Lord love you' crosses. He died 2006 at age 93.
