As for the domestic car manufacturers, the gov't took part ownership in order to best protect the taxpayers money used for the bailouts. If GM continues to surprise and delight, the government may even make some money when it goes public with a stock offering this year or next.

@1georg57 The bailouts gave the government zero more control over the banks & financial institutions. eg: they couldn't even persuade them to forgo the big CEO bonuses, even though they tried.
As for the domestic car manufacturers, the gov't took part ownership in order to best protect the taxpayers money used for the bailouts. If GM continues to surprise and delight, the government may even make some money when it goes public with a stock offering this year or next.

The domestic auto industry is again healthy. The rise in unemployment, which developed during the Bush term & continued to about Oct. 2009, has leveled off.
However, jobs are the last to return after a recession.
It's a horrible situation, but the last thing the country needs is the GOP sol'n of "tax cuts for the rich".

The only thing we did to "ruin" Mexico was by allowing it to exist. Mexico was ours, for the taking at the end of the Mexican-American war, but the liberals then, just as now, had no vision. If he were to lock down immigration reform this year, it will be with NO Republican support! If I were Obama, I'd be brave and go for it even in a midterm election year. If were to get something by 2011, he will have probably have (could be wrong) the Latino vote locked up like a criminal. This would ultimately destroy the GOP party for the next 3 or 4 elections.

Welfare started after WWII, for those white lower & middle class women who were widowed b/c their husbands died in the war, so they didn't have to work & could stay home & take care of their kids. Men returning from the war wanted their jobs back, those jobs that women stepped up to do during the war, in most cases, did them just as well as men!
