Think of AIDS - this is a disease that is now completely and utterly manageable given the medicines we have available to us. According to Buddhist teachings, desires need to be accepted before they can be transcended. You can't ''program'' away or ''cut away'' desires if you have not fully investigated them. Buddhist psychology goes pretty deep into this and I agree with it from personal experience.. If you view them as 'rotten' or 'bad' then they will only keep bothering you.
