  • Died this day in 1983...I think I liked his solo music best of all.

  • oh how I love this song <3

  • Stellar.

  • @jakethesnake10000: To answer your question VDP and BW have a huge history of collaboration. . .I was not making a comparison between Smile and Orange Crate . . .that would be ludicrous, as they are two completely separate musical visions. That doesn't mean that I don't like OCA, but it's no SMILE

  • This song is really fantastic!

  • This version is more touching than the L.A Album! Beautiful!

  • @blue29eyes

    Yep, you make perfect sense.

  • Cool! A different version! Yay! So....where's 'Love Surrounds Me' ?

  • 7 people were born with no soul

  • I love this song!!!! Wish you lived longer Dennis. I was just one of those kids there to see you at a State fair. I wish I had known your true feelings, pains, sorrows, and joys just waiting to be released. Wish they had gotten their chance to do so. RIP

  • @DillPickleet I believe in my heart Dennis knows he is doing much more for people through his music even today. Does this make sense to you? I am sure Dennis is fine and happy now. xo

  • dennis is just incredible

  • DW # 2

  • I lose myself in this song and the whole emotion of it.

  • all we can say to much to young to soon he was the youngest beach boy from the beach boys dennis wilson farewell he plyes the piano and the drums also sung in a back up vocals R.I.P dennis wilson you ..ROCK IN PEACE( R.I.P).

  • @cealend Carl was the youngest, he was 14 when the Beach Boys began 50 years ago; Dennis was 17 and Brian 19. But, yes Dennis' was a significant loss to the world. I think the remaining Beach Boys should do a 50 year reunion/tribute to Dennis and Carl. Mike and Bruce should not be a representation of the Beach Boys while the true geniuses' (The Wilsons') masterpieces remain relatively unknown to mainstream society. We need their music to inspire tomorrow's artists, not Lil Wayne & Lady GaGa.

  • @BeachBoy420Beef

    I agree! Good post.

  • " . . . still have what's left of Brian"? What does that mean exactly? He wouldn't be where he is today without the life experiences he had over the years, both good and bad, we would probably never had seen a release like "Smile" . . . which is probably one of Brian's greatest personal works ever other than the stuff he did with Van Dyke Parks. . .

  • @brienb1770 the 2004 release was great but for the most part it was constructed by people who were not brian wilson. eugene landy successfully extinguished brian's spark in the 80's and i think it's a testament to the man that he is still able to write better pop music than the majority of people peddling it today. and did you just compare Smile to Orange Crate Art? if so, that's hilarious

  • Ethereal... ♪♫♪ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♪♫♪

  • One of the absolutely TOP Songs from Dennis ..... and from the Beach Boys. LOVE IT!!!

  • won.... won.... wonderful!

  • One of the best off the LA Light album (both we're Dennis') funky kinda Randy Newman middle eighth and strange horn bursts make this an odd tune and that's what I dig about it--

  • Oh Dennis, we all miss you sooooooooo much. My heart aches without you.

  • Is that Charles Manson at 1:00?

  • @FuckingStanz lol actually that looks like James Taylor i think it is him

  • @cowboys4life956 It's Denny and JT from Two Lane Blacktop.

  • @FuckingStanz that picture was taken while filming the movie Two Lane Blacktop.

  • @warcat69 Cracking film as well actually. Utterly brilliant.

  • Thanks Denny for all your wonderful music.

  • Karen Lamm .... So beautiful .

    The quintessential California Blonde .

  • @DCLAURIE Actually, to what I know, all of Denny's wives, Barbara , Carole Anne and Karen were midwest beauties(Michigan, Indiana), Shawn was a California girl. Can't beat Mike Love with what 13 wives and counting. Barbara and Carole are still great looking, especially Barbara,

  • Dennis Wilson was a very personal friend of mine. I had no idea I could see him on video. It brings back a vision of a man that was so unique and had no idea of it. What a great honor to have know him and loved him and his family. Dennis you're awesome still!!!

Rick Pearce (Meatless Messhall) Venice Beach, CA

  • Another beautiful song...Dennis wrote from his heart and sung from his soul.

This song really touches my heart, I only hope Dennis and Carl both know how many lives their music has touched...soo sad that someone couldn't have given him the type of love he needed.

  • This is the kind of song that makes me think that all people from all cultures could cure what ills their souls, if they ever bothered to open their minds, and let the healing begin.

  • That's Carl in the chorus. Denny is doing the verse (middle part). What a beautiful track.

  • Dennis sang barritone with Mike. Look up In My Room here on YouTube, there is a version with the boys singing live to an instrumental background. You can clearly hear Dennis' voice. Also, he sang in studio but not live. If anyone questions wether or not his voice belonged, check out Do You Wanna Dance. He sang lead. Unfortunately by the time he recorded Baby Blue he'd damaged his voice which gives it that smokey Joe Cocker sound.

  • Dennis didn't harmonize on most of the songs. He did not have the vocal abilities of the other group members.

  • Once you begin to recognize the tone of Dennis' younger voice you can hear him in a lot of the harmonies. He's all over 'Today'

  • @redkerr He didn't do the harmonies live, but he did in the studio.

  • in your ass

  • I read in the liner notes to a Beach Boys CD I have, that if we could Angels sing, they would sound like Carl Wilson. I'd add, they would sound like the harmonies in this song.

  • Absolutely "haunting" love song since both incredible talents are now in Heaven. Sounds like their spirits singing back to us.

  • Rock on , Denny ! Let da angels sing !

  • An incredible Denny/Carl song fron the 1979 ' LA Light' LP. Carl's voice is so tender and is in such contrast to Denny's, which is equally as emotive.

    GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!

    John Hunter Phillips

"If We Ever Need A super Man"

  • Great guy, he is sorely missed.

  • dennis' voice sometimes reminds me of joe cocker, but not overstated.........

  • Sure does. Love ya Denny.

  • What an absolutely beautiful song.

  • So beautiful. That piano followup to Dennis's beautiful voice kills me everytime. As if his voice wasn't enough..........

  • I find it great that Dennis stepped up and just had these wonderful songs and the material just cemented the Wilson brothers legacy. I miss Carl and Dennis and wish that they were here on this earth to join Brian and company and sing for the world today.

  • A very perceptive comment.

  • I had a chance to open for the Beach Boys in Knoxville in '66 and Dennis was having a bad night...the sound system sucked and his microphone kept turning away from him, frustrating him to the point of saying "f it" and walking off stage. His manager talked him into going back and it he put everything into it. Miss and bless the man for his contributions to our lives through his music.

  • Don't know if this was mentioned, but this is a "in-progress"-version from Bambu (actually it mixes the Bambu with the LA(Light Album)-version). Dennis recorded and released the song finally with the Beach Boys.

  • One of the most evocative songs to come out of the Brothers Wilson.

  • Truly amazing song! All 3 brothers had amazing talent.

  • Yes they did! God Bless Them!!

  • "...the progressive era (67-73)..."

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!

  • cool recond

  • Guys aren't supposed to cry. That's what they say. But, Dennis KILLS me on this song. Always has.

Sounds like an aging rocker at the end of the trail, reminiscing...

  • Me too man. This song gets me right inside! Same with some of his other sweet melodies on Ocean Pacific!

    Regards.

  • @tommyrock69

Dennis kills me on more than one song, to say the least.

  • yeah the progressive era (67-73) is definitely very underrated and i agree they should have incoporated those songs more into the live sets. Blame Capitol for releasing Endless Summer, I think the band felt obligated to appease the crowd with the oldies rather than serenade them with those late 60s early 70s gems

  • The group in some ways missed out not using the other members as much. The albums between 68 and 79 are proof of this. Because they had to produce more WITHOUT Brian. It made them work both as a group and individuals better. The result is devine songs like this, Add some Music to your day, You need a mess of help to stand alone and Promised road. Its such a shame that they went down the goldie oldies route. The music they created was in some ways superior than the earlier stuff. Legends.

  • Denny looks so much older than his earth years, A rough life and his demoms. Blrdd him, and the talent that was overlooked for so many years,

  • Oh my, this is just such an exquisite piece of musical art. WOW!

  • Beautiful.. God bless you Denny

  • i heard this first back in 79 on the LA album ,when the BB resurfaced with lady lynda in the charts , it's as much beautiful now as it was then ..that voice of carl WOW

  • This is gorgeous. Hard to believe we lost Carl and Denny. What a huge loss. (Sigh)...Thanks for posting this incredible song.

  • @tylermeatball thank god we still have whats left of brian

  • Is Bambu being released in the UK, not heard about that. Lovely song by the way.

  • Baby Blue was originally intended for Denny's Bambu solo album , But ended uo on the Beach Boys LA album in 1979 .

Pacific Ocean Blue and Bambu are going to be released on double CD and on a special 3 record set on June 17th .

I asbolutely love this song !!!!!!!

    Very haunting melody .

    RIP CARL & DENNY :(

  • That was very nice! I like it - I like this stuff they were doing! A little overproduced with that "vibey" sound - I would have stripped it out and just let the voices roll, a cleaner sound. But it sounded good!

  • RIP denny

  • Man this song makes me cry! Thats a killer melody!!! Can't wait for the re-release! Finally!

  • this song is so good.

  • Baby Blue's on Bamboo, so you'll probably only find it as a bootleg.... But Pacific Ocean Blue is getting re-issued in the next couple of months and well worth getting. Have a listen to 'Thoughts of You,' probably one of the most poignant songs I know.

  • Fantastic, thanks for the info. I know "Thoughts of You" already, got it in my favourites list. :)

  • Bambu is being released with Pacific Ocean Blue -- in June. It's a double CD set. Also "Baby Blue" is on the Beach Boys' Light Album (L.A.). I recently bought it as a single.

  • Is this on Pacific Ocean Blue?,and is that album re released? (yet!)

  • Dennis & Carl RIP !!!!!!!

    You are so missed :(

    I agree with Markcruiser64 , Carl's

    vocal is so beautiful .....

  • beautiful song i get chills every time i hear it

  • SOOO GOOD to hear this.

    thank you for posting it.

  • I know that Carl sang the first part of this on the released (Light Album)version, but I'm fairly sure that this is Dennis all the way, with Brian on fade out harmonies at the end. Great version - thanks for posting.

  • Nope. This is Carl Wilson sing lead with Dennis coming in on the "Late at night, while the whole world is sleeping" section. I can't believe people think that's Dennis Singing all the way. If they heard the LA (Light Album) version, they'd know it's the same. By the time this was recorded, Dennis' voice was no longer anything close to what's being sung by Carl here.

This version is only slightly different from the LA (Light Album) version. But the lead and secondary vocals haven't changed.

  • Also Chritie McVie sings background vocals. She starts this track off after whistle. Her painted portrait is on the LA Light album (Baby Blue). Great song!!

  • Nope it's Carl on Vocals, Dennis and Carl on Chorus and them multitracking some of the vocals for a larger sound. Brian Wilson is NO WHERE on this song in any of it's three know incarnations. This is a mix of the two versions Dennis and Carl worked on blended together AKA The Jason Pennick Mix. Pennick felt the two different tracks were actually meant to be mixed to together to form one mix of the song. An impressive feat but I think the the Babmu version (whistled bridge only) beat is by miles

  • I know that Carl sang the first part of this on the released (Light Album)version, but I'm fairly sure that this is Dennis all the way, with Brian on fade out harmonies at the end. Great version - thanks for posting.

  • wonderful, thanks for posting

  • I wouldn't say Carl was just a supporting member, he was the glue that held them together after Brian stopped performing with them, Carl was the soul of the Beach Boys, but yes Dennis was alot more talented than Mike Love would ever give him credit for.

  • Carls' deeply heatfelt vocal makes alsomst anyone tear up hearing this.

  • Well done!!

  • Without the Wilsons...they are a tribute band.

  • Worse actually

  • i have to agree. theyre hurting the bands legacy with the shows theyve put on in the last few years.

  • Words don't describe how much I absolutely love this song...always been one of my favorites.

  • This is among Dennis's best! So sad he left us so young. After Brian he was the best. BBs, has a name: Wilsons, all the rest are just supporting members!!

  • Great song. Beach Boys has a name, Wilsons. W/o them they are just the pseudo beach boys!

  • awesome! love this version
