It really wasn't unusual in Classical and Renaissance circles for artistic and literary men to be bisexual or gay. It's likely, from historical evidence and the intensity of his compositions, that Caravaggio was homosexual or at least bisexual. BUT the point is, Jarman is taking looking at Caravaggio from a gay perspective; it's inevitable, and intended I think, that this aspect of his nature is intensified for the camera - and with Sean Bean as his lover, who's complaining? ;)
Gay people are just like everybody else. You don't have to have an issue with them, or black people, fat, short, poor, stupid, or anything different. Mush gay history has
been taken out of the books. Leonardo, Michaelangelo, were gay.
@alvaritooooooooo They didn't go for period accuracy with this film. The costumes and other visual elements are modern day. I think because of the low budget they chose to do this.
@alvaritooooooooo I don't think it's bad - it just means the production could not afford period costumes and accoutrements so they chose to give the film a non-descript vaguely 20th century visual style.
This is a GREAT film by a great artist about another Great genius/artist.......gay/ straight/ whatever! One of the best of Derek Jarman! God Bless his soul!
it's very stupid how italy of 1600 is recreated in this way, with these costumes and others things definitely stereotyped. why this choose??? it's completely wrong, (i'm italian but I think that all of u can understand this mistake) maybe do i not understand a counscious choose by the producer??
@Smoovelly: You are not asexual, you are simply a heterosexual with a masturbation addiction. So what if someone cheats. You either forgive them or move on. That's life.
Funny how terrified straight people get when they realise how some of the greatest men in history were gay - and were often great BECAUSE of their sexuality, and not despite it. Ay, Socrates?
@MoveOverCasanova Dear silly-person: Who you love greatly influences the creative process: they are are integrally linked - this is true for everyone, not only artists. To divorce the artist's sexual - and therefore emotional - well-being from his creative output is foolhardy, and if you are a scholar it is almost criminal. However, since you are obviously not a scholar, you may continue grovelling in the mire as the rest of us play equestrian.
@MoveOverCasanova Actually, I don't wear trousers. I'm a woman. Funny how homophobic people always assume gay people are mainly men. But you are welcome nevertheless.
the camera obscura does not take photographs and to transfer the forms onto the surface you need to be a draughtsman; no master, even those that did not leave behind drawings, could not draw
@MoveOverCasanova Goodness me! Someone failed Psychology 1 at university. Please keep your ignorance enclosed tightly behind the thick boundary of your skull - for the benefit of posterity, I beg of you.
@MoveOverCasanova it is not ignorant to assume someone is gay?? looking at the homo erotic theme that runs in most of Caravaggio's work it would be easy to assume he might have been gay, or atleast bisexual
besides the fact that it is not worth considering at all, i just wanna say that our society goes wrong in the way it faces it´s sex - - caravaggio was a damn brilliant painter with a highly erotic eye - and only because he painted men in a very natural it way does not mean he was gay -
THE REAL GAY ONES TO ME ARE THE ONES WHO SHOUT LOUDEST ABOUT GAYS - it is no shame to be openmind - it is just a laugh to make a topic out of it!
@MoveOverCasanova I didn't say he was gay....It is just very likely that he was? A painting like Boy Bitten By Lizard to me seems a work of art that really and truly only a gay person would be able to create...sexuality does have a profound effect on the work you create, i believe this as an artist...im not saying caravaggio made gay art...but there definatley was an attraction to effeminate boys and strong men...all very revealingly depicted...
anyway, where do you take that "evidence" from? biographies? or do you see it in the pictures? i find some of his pictures extremely arousing in their purity sometimes, and really not in a gay way! not that i really despise homosexuality, but i think the opinion that caravaggio was gay or bi comes from philistine narrowbrains who have no clue of an artist´s real motivations!!
@MoveOverCasanova Why is that? If a male artist portrays a beautiful man in a very erotic and attractive way - why is it stupid to consider he may be homosexual. Just as if a female painter did the same thing, one may assume she is heterosexual. Either way, where is the harm in drawing a conclusion?
@MoveOverCasanova I don't think that is the fact he painted naked men but the fact he puted erotism in them which can make us belive he was gay. gay or not he is a f***ing genius
Painting is more than outlines. It is texture, colour, light and shade and a lot of things non artists can barely comprehend. Hitler didn't use a camera obscura. Hitler's sexual orientation was much more weeeeerd than Caravaggio's.

Non credo proprio che all'epoca vi fossero questi usi e costumi.
I do not think that at that time there were these traditions and customs.

well then, come then down from your high horse and teach me, little knowitall!
"Because of their sexuality"?? woooh, that´s as significant as when you´d say:"he made great art because he was alive!"
don´t go telling people things so obvious that they have already forgotten them, HAYL, PLATON!

i divorced noithing from noone, i only doubted that c.
was a homo, a matter we both will not be able to throw no real light upon, right__ - and if you are one of those who
believe homos are the better and more creative, please leave me alone.
besides i do not believe in homosexuality - it is more
attitude than real inclination as i mentioned before,
if you have write-diarrhoe, please fart on someonelse, ok??!thank you very much, scholar!!

you see, auntie, and like me about your person, you do know nothing about me and my
notions, just blind diagnoses!
"homophobic"???
in not one word did i say anything against homos.
i only object against the simplification that an artist who paints naked men is automatically homosexual.
this is the typical "two and a half men" - idiot´s view,-- alike ppl. accused schiele of pedophilia just because he painted nude children.

being "gay" is to a certain extent part of human nature, even of bestial nature. and caravaggio was definitely a child of nature ---
people who divide between hetero, homo, metro, bi etc. etc. are definitely not.
there is just a bit to little oxygene in their twisted minds
MoveOverCasanova 2 years ago 3
Yes, indeed... Also when we try to judge Caravaggio's sexual life through twisted minds far away in a 400 years time.

Caravaggio didn't paint like that. He used a camera obscura to trace over the reflected image. In other words, he didn't know how to draw.
gaud123 3 years ago
as did most of the artists who hold hallowed places in todays conciousness. but there is no doubt he could paint. see his work for proof.
