It really wasn't unusual in Classical and Renaissance circles for artistic and literary men to be bisexual or gay. It's likely, from historical evidence and the intensity of his compositions, that Caravaggio was homosexual or at least bisexual. BUT the point is, Jarman is taking looking at Caravaggio from a gay perspective; it's inevitable, and intended I think, that this aspect of his nature is intensified for the camera - and with Sean Bean as his lover, who's complaining? ;)

@alvaritooooooooo They didn't go for period accuracy with this film. The costumes and other visual elements are modern day. I think because of the low budget they chose to do this.

@alvaritooooooooo I don't think it's bad - it just means the production could not afford period costumes and accoutrements so they chose to give the film a non-descript vaguely 20th century visual style.

This is a GREAT film by a great artist about another Great genius/artist.......gay/ straight/ whatever! One of the best of Derek Jarman! God Bless his soul!

it's very stupid how italy of 1600 is recreated in this way, with these costumes and others things definitely stereotyped. why this choose??? it's completely wrong, (i'm italian but I think that all of u can understand this mistake) maybe do i not understand a counscious choose by the producer??

To divorce the artist's sexual - and therefore emotional - well-being from his creative output is foolhardy, and if you are a scholar it is almost criminal. the camera obscura does not take photographs and to transfer the forms onto the surface you need to be a draughtsman; no master, even those that did not leave behind drawings, could not draw

A painting like Boy Bitten By Lizard to me seems a work of art that really and truly only a gay person would be able to create...sexuality does have a profound effect on the work you create, i believe this as an artist...im not saying caravaggio made gay art...but there definatley was an attraction to effeminate boys and strong men...all very revealingly depicted...

anyway, where do you take that "evidence" from? biographies? or do you see it in the pictures? i find some of his pictures extremely arousing in their purity sometimes, and really not in a gay way! not that i really despise homosexuality, but i think the opinion that caravaggio was gay or bi comes from philistine narrowbrains who have no clue of an artist´s real motivations!!

Caravaggio didn't paint like that. He used a camera obscura to trace over the reflected image. In other words, he didn't know how to draw.

Painting is more than outlines. It is texture, colour, light and shade and a lot of things non artists can barely comprehend. Hitler didn't use a camera obscura. Hitler's sexual orientation was much more weeeeerd than Caravaggio's.
