Excellent! This version is the same version I was taught several years ago by Jerry Warren Sensei, Placentia, CA. Warren Sensei was taught this kata himself by Master Trias and Warren Sensei is also listed in Master Trias' Pinnacle as one of his shodans from way back. The only difference I see is we are taught to be a little quicker on the stance changes, otherwise it is identical. Good to see!
This is a good running of go pei sho... if you want to see a great running of this kata look up Randy Cura.. i think the kid is 15, but it looks really good. Not trying to take away from you, but i just prefer the way he runs it.
@martialarts18 I took a look at the kata of Randy Cura. For tournament competition, his performance is fine. But, I'm not a fan of "dramatic interpretation" of traditional kata. Dramatizing a kata removes the original techniques from the arena of combat and throws it into the realm of "performance art". Might as well be ballet...
I was always trained to believe that the downward motions in the beginning were tearing and ripping motions.Hence the "Advanced Tearing Peacock Form". This is a very interesting way of running the kata. Its interesting seeing the different ways we are taught. 5 points for the ice cream truck. lol.
Different then what i was tught...I have seen Dominic Nelson who is AZ Chapter head of The USKA run similar to this. I trained under Hillhouse(Who Trained with O'Sensei and Pte Rabino. and Mark Neutzman and Mark Knighton. Mark Neutzman has some of the Original Photos in his Possession of photos used in The Pinnacal of Karate. He and O'Sensei Trias were very close. The way i run Wansu is extremely Powerful and explosive with emphasis on the 'Dumping form" I feel maximum Chi with this form,
I've seen that Kata very nicely done !... I Was A Student Of Grand Master Trias' ... At Double Dragon DoJo ... I was Trained By Head Instructor Jerry Pickeral And Sinsi Bud " Druma " .. Noted as The Oldest to get a Black Belt By Master Trias' That Kata was ran around 1936 -1926 ? I have San-Chin From them ... Both , open and closed hand . These Are 1200 yrs old . I will not post them on here .I would Like To Talk With You Some Time.
I train Okinawa Shuri-Ryu in lineage from O´Sensei Trias ( Shihan Vitue Bilking) and this is not at all how we do it. It has some similaraties but far from at least what is thought now as Gopei Sho.
I was contacted by another direct student of Master Trias that was there before and during the early days of the USKA. The kata was recognized as the "kenpo" version. I'll take that to mean that it was styled for an American flavor that would appeal to a broader community of karateka in the arena of standard tournament kata. It's my understanding that Master Trias reverted Gopeisho to its original form a few years prior to his passing. So, this may be the only surviving alternate version.
Let us also realize that O'Sensei Trias is the originator of the kata GoPei-sho. He had whatever rule he would want in changing it so many times. Your 'version' of the kata seems to have a blend of Tensho in it. If in saying kenpo, likely you are referring to the Shorei-Goju days? Also, Bob Bowles ran this kata in competition during the '70's, but ran it in the form as we know it today (without 'kenpo' influence).
I have never seen this version before, I worked out in Trais Inetrnational in the mid seventies and 80"s and know karatekas who worked out back in the 60"s with Master Trais and I've never seen it run like that, must be another style.
Very impressive, and very interesting - thanks a million! I never saw or heard of this before; what's its origin? Is it a White Crane form, or am I just showing my ignorance? In some few ways it reminds me a little of Miyagi Osensei's Tensho kata.
His vercion of Kata Gopeisho or Kujaku has more movement and less movement. The Mudra is repeated only 3 times throughout the Kata, which he learned from Sensei Shinzato Heizo, a disciple of Sensei Shiro Saito, direct student of Sensei Choki "Saru Oji No Gozen" Motobu. .Pablo Luis Villamor, date of birth :10-May -1942, karate training from 6-June-1960 to date.
Who taught you this Version, because my Sensei's are Stan Hillhouse, Mark Kneutzman, and Mark Knighten. I also still play with Mike Wall once in a while. I do not see the peacock form in this version. Anyway I won world with my name...You're doing Shuri Ryu good usssss!
With the ice cream or the kata? As for bunkai and oyo for this kata, I'll have to make arrangements for a demonstration partner...if that's what you'd like. I'd very much like to include bunkai and oyo in future demonstrations. But, I'll do it as time permits.
Thanks for noticing! Since Hakkakukei Nunchaku Ep. 6, I've dropped 5 lbs. I didn't actually buy any ice cream. I went out to a vegetarian Indian Cuisine place instead.
