So I got an umbrella but noticed it shoots in the upper portion of the upbrella and with my pocketwizard on it I can not aim it down. The umbrella that is angled would work great, which mount is that and is there a link so that I could purchase it?
@starstalkerz Speak for yourself mate. I'm a pro who watches & learns from Marks videos. I doubt you have any info which justifies your claim that most of Mark's 'users' as you put it, are just amateurs & therefore his videos should be dumbed down to things you can do. Mark's brilliant & should kept doing what's made him successful & other people better photographers.
@starstalkerz Wow you're sensitive! I never said I was 'so pro', stick to facts & don't exaggerate. You don't have to be a master at ALL types of photography to work professionally in a couple of areas of it. Mark is brilliant at teaching a wide variety & amateurs aren't the only people who learn from him.
@global001 and i never said that he should only make videos for amateurs... i said he should do more videos which normal people can use (doesnt need expensive gear)
@global001 I guess even pros have to come back and learn about exposure and bracketting cause they never went out of auto mode. Please talk for yourself, see the episodes he has and think what his audience is....
Btw I'm no newbie either and looking at your other comments it seems you have issues with what other people think. Look through his channel, see which videos have more views and then talk.
@starstalkerz LOL you have no idea how many of Mark's videos I've seen or not seen nor do you know why I clicked on this video so stop pretending you do. If you don't want people to counter your view that his audience is mainly amateur & therefore he should change the videos he does then send a private message to him. Publicly anyone can voice their views & respond to things they disagree with hence the reply option. Name calling is not big or clever but obviously makes you feel better.
Mark, I love your videos but you need to get a better concept of cheap! a $400-$500 flash isn't what some one shooting in their own house will most likely use. A third party flash is more likely
...so use a cheap flash to do the same thing. I have the YN560, its $70 on amazon. It's manual but does everything else the same.
This video is so basic (even for me, I've had a camera for 3 weeks), that if you really want to learn about flash, you need a more in depth video elsewhere anyway :D
@Ipoditouchreview3r I don't think he ever said that you need to use new or branded flashes. He's teaching concepts & ways of creating images here not telling you that you have to spend a lot of money. Most would think you'd be happy with a free top class photographic education from him. Some people are never pleased!
speedsnoot? xD really? here's a tip for people on a budget like myself: duct tape and some empty tp rolls. Also, for nikon shooters: there is no need for the SU800 with the D7000. It's pop up flash can do the job of commander module for most of the SB-xxx series..
Beyond that, thanks Mark, you are very inspirational.
I do have a Nikon D3100 and my SB600 also a Yongnou NY460 and a pair of Aputure trigmaster triggers. and Im ready to start my lowbudget home studio, Thank you mark for the tips keep the good work and Happy New year to all of you in Adorama TV.
one question,. when u're shooting with flash or studio strobes specially indoor shooting do u switch the auto white balance to manual as well?. thank you!..
i have d3100,sb700,and cowboy trigger. my question is do think i can use YN560 or any suggestion of not expensive flash that trigger by cowboy? also how i can make ttl mode my sb700 off the camera using my d3100? because i only use manual mode when off the camera. the problem is i'm not sure when to use the right power in manual mode. hope you help me. thanks
@tieman172 I wouldn't say it's "obscene." But you're right they could have mentioned that people on an extremely short budget can probably get away with using the on camera flash to trigger the off camera flashes.
@akmalrosli pick up a new Yongnuo yn-460 II, used Nikon SB-24, or a used Vivitar 285HV. These are all good MANUAL flashes that you should be able to get for under $50.
Using this steps I got really professional looking results with my Canon 5D M II. And it was sooo easy to achieve! Thanks , once again Mark (ultimate photo instructor)
Apparently I'm the only old guy on here. Sliding in the 'Les' reference at 1:18 was genius. However, I do live near Cincy and my father-in-law worked at WQRP in Dayton a long time ago. Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming.
@JMLubag...I did a test to see if the commander flash was visible in an exposure...it is. I had to cross 1/400th before its reflection on a shiny surface could not be seen. Now does it really effect an exposure to any appreciable level is beyond me. THough it will show in a shiny object. One bit of advise...never hold a speed light directly against your chest to block its light. You will melt your shirt!
This is by far the most useful video you have done so far Mark!!!! Great job. I have just bought myself a westcott umbrella, stand, bracket and radio triggers. I had mostly worked out the settings in M mode on my 60d but it was just fantastic to hear a clear explanation on how to set it up.... Feeling more confident to do my first job taking photo's of children in a play school. Wish me luck!!

The SU800 he used on the D7000 is not needed. The on board pop-up flash will do the commander work. I am a big fan of Mark and these videos, but this one leaves me very disappointed. I get the product placements they need to do to support the cost of making of these videos, but the addtion of the, completely un-needed, SU800 in here is obscene, especially when discussing working on a budget.
@tieman172 We used the SU800 to demonstrate the gear needed for the majority of photographers (Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc) who don't have a specific camera. We're trying to teach principles not specific gear.
@snapfactory I appreciate your response. As the others have said this really is one of the best videos you have produced! Thanks again for all that you do!
@snapfactory Exactly. My Canon 5D doesn't have a pop-up flash. In fairness I didn't need the use of the video but still very informative for those with a Canon lower end setup where you need a ST-E2 or a 550/580EX on camera as a master (Nikon Commander).
@tieman172 you want him to use a cheap $20 external flash for this video? would you sleep good at night if he does that for you? You didnt criticized him using a D7000 if SU800 was such a pain in your ass. Its not a cheap camera to begin with. Whatelse do you have in mind to point finger at? Im sure it must be Mark and his team spending money on paying people to build this set/room for this particular video. Too expensive for you isnt it?
@tieman172 ( I agree I don't have have the Nikon su800 all I can afford right now is the pop up flash on my camera. But now I want a su800. I still found this video very helpful.
@tieman172 you're right... it's just OBSCENE. Relax, pal. They do a great job with the videos, and you've apparently taken offense to something minor... actually no nonexistent.
there are a lot of other cheep options for pocket wizards. You can get 3 Radio trigger Transceivers for about 50 Buggs a strong flash for 70 bugs each. Much more better and Cheeper when working in Manual Mode, but not so comfortable as shown in your video.
my garage = sutdio soon! to give an idea of costs: my setup: SPeedlight EX 580 II by Canon + 2 budget ones China made: Yongnuo Digital (ETTL II,IR sensor& Master/Slave too) all OK+. wireless set: 1 sender,3 receivers by Cactus( no ETTL here :( ) 3 stands and 3 umbrellas(as in this vid), shootthrough& silver/white bounce (Small modifiers I've built myself). all for +/- 300 €; excluding the Speedlight, off course.
