This is indeed a brilliant gut-wrenching version of the great Lorraine Ellison original, which strangely has been withdrawn by Google. I have no idea what they're thinking sometimes, but if anyone out there is able to access the original, I promise you, it will make the hairs on the hairs on the back of your neck and arms stand on end.
this reminds me of when i was little and my mum playing it loud, tears in her eyes, now i understand why........ ruby turner has done the best version of this by far xx
Does anyone else remember the British TV series "Comics" from the 90s? This song was used repeatedly in (I think) a flashback sequence. It's probably sacrilege, but I prefer this to Scott Walker's version.
Flawless, for a Studio version (I don't see much of the Ambulance Garage!). I have an even better tape cassette recorded Live version that makes your hair curl, recorded at the Isle of Wight Garlic Festival (in a field) and Broadcast by BBC Radio 2 live, about 10 years ago. As soon as I pressed Stop, I jumped on my old Triumph and caught the end of the gig! (5 miles away). She is/was Awesome.
lorraine ellison's version is the best - her voice is absolutely spine tingling..ruby does a good job, but it pales in comparison to Lorraine's. You can't get her original on Youtube anymore:(
@LKProductions Michael Grimm has this as a cover on his new album that is out May 17th. Michael won America's Got Talent last year - awesome soul singer!
@LKProductions - funny, i'm from holland! michael grimm won 2010 america's got talent & kills any song he sings, original or cover! this song will be on his new album “michael grimm”, but pls listen to his version of: “fallin'” (on the ellen show) & you won't say michael who? anymore! he plays crazy guitar, too! see: “guitar talk” & “bang bang”!! he is unbelievable!!...
@gemalauren This is where I first heard the song and why I love the Ruby version in particular - the 'film' with the motorbike down the hill is 'Comics' TV drama by Lynda LaPlante about a comic who witnesses a gang related murder or similar.
I remember the original of this by Lorraine Ellison in 1966. Powerful!!! The song is used in a wonderful scene from the movie Pirate Radio, about the pirate rock radio station, Radio Rock, broadcasting from the freighter anchored off the British coast in 1966-67. Excellent movie. However the scene was deleted but can still be seen on the DVD. The movie was so long that they had to delete almost 1 hour of film (which is still over 2 hours)
This is real music, good morals and a good song for da soul,i hope there would be more songs like this now,if there were more songs like this the world would not be like this,it's a shame.
thanks firstly to BLTHEROINE, FOR POST HIS COMMENT, ive been try to rember for years this song was played in that progarme Comics could remember the film tile..Thanks.... ie the song is played, as Jonny Lazers mums walks into the cold sea to end her life, stay with me baby is played, very very moving end to the short film... tear in my eyes.
I've seen Ruby a number of times with Jools Holland...what a singer. Out of the many covers of this fantastic song, this is my favourite...but the original is unsurpassable...in my opinion
Hi this fantastic version of Stay With Me was used in a TV drama called Comics written by Lynda La Plante. The central character was a stand up comic called Jonny Lazer. He was a screwed up lad running away from his traumatic childhood memories.
Ruby has a knock out voice and in my opinion sings this from her very soul.
I worked for her promotional company back in the 80s. Thought she was pretty good but she snubbed anyone who wasn't 'cool' at a big record company event I was at , so I got the impression she was a bit stuck up and so I thought 'f*ck you and binned her records and didn't raise a sweat on her promotion. It pays to be nice to people. And quel surprise - her career bombed. I wonder why. :-)
Went to see Jools Holland and his band last night in Derry.Ruby Turner made a guest appearance as usual.Mother of God she was amazing! This is the second time I have seen her.I have to tell you folks it doesnt get any better than Ruby singing 'Peace in the Valley' live with the big band behind her.Jools,Ruby and Dave Edmunds with the band are very special group of musicians. If you get the chance to see them live dont miss it!

That film was full of good songs, but this one was the best.
