The 2006 World Cup was a classic tournament. Memorable matches--the Italy-Germany semi-final (maybe one of the greatest world matches ever), the final, a phenomenal Argentina team that possibly crashed out too soon. The group matches were electric. Italy-Australia. A resurgent France. Easy to go on and on.
2006 was an amazing World cup, Best atmosphere ever, that only European football can do. there was a terrible atmosphere in South Africa, and there wasn't the same excitement in the games altogether it was a poor World Cup. 2006 on the other hand was truly special.
@rogeedodge Yes, what with U2 being so fucking integral to German culture. Goddamn Goethe, Mendelssohn and Bruckner, getting in the way of true artists like Bono.
@Giovanni222 sure. make a montage about german culture and have those composers over the top then. i find that most of the time the audio and visuals in this video tell two different stories.
anyone of you know the BBC video of this 2010 world cup that shows clips like this video but with a diff song lie i can fly o i can dream,,, or dreaming flying,, and Robiho is in appears as the image of the video!!
@smiffy124 how was it a dive? in that match italy got a red card they shouldnt have, and with 1 man down italy still dominated that match, as the aussies could only get 2 good attempts on goal whereas italy still had 5 or 6. as for the foul, neill holds down grossos foot, its a clear foul
just before the video starts gary linekar says " the news from gelsenkirken is that England are out of the world cup" anyone seen that i think bbc took it off ?
this was shown after the final. they just put an extra focus on england cos that's the bbc home nation. this was the bbc's last piece of tournament footage after the final
@Giovanni222 ahh yess i see this is a montage for the full tournament. i like the england montage, they play pet shop boys over the video. cant believe i was in numremberg 5 years ago?????? :O wowza
The BBC's theme tune for the 2006 World Cup is 'Sports Prepare' by celebrated composer Carl Davis. Adapted from George Handel's "See the Conquering Hero Comes", Davis conducted this modern rendition with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the BBC Singers.
Going against the grain of us English being very down on our country lately, I personally hope we do get 2018. It needs to be in Europe at the very least. I also root for Australia to win 2022.
yea right. they couldnt beat south korea or switzerland. so stop crying they lost. italy only let 2 goals in because of their kick ass defense. oh, and if your a zidane fan i feel bad for you. forza italia.
Wonderful, beyond the world cup this video and event had alot of meaning for the german people. Its the world extending its hand and demonstrating that germany is a great nation again. Kudos to BBC for using quotes from goethe's work and Bach' s jesus mein freude. Initially i prefered ESPN's U2 closing but after understanding the significance behind this video i am at awe.
it dosint really matter about the penalty because they were denied one later in the game and any way.... italy deserved the win because they should have at LEAST made it to the semis in 2002 and if they would have beat france in the shootout in 2000... thts 3 euros 5 world cups
the best sport in the world, thats all, all sports are good and each of them have their own styles,etc.. but football have a lot of things that any sports have (more passion, most popular in the world and other things)
sorry to all americans who says that soccer is for pussys and other things really sorry to all of them because they know that soccer is #1 and the most beutiful in the world and always be the same
Italy lost 3 World Cups on penalties in 1990,1994 and 1998 and were robbed in 2002. Their time had come, I am Irish, I am a neutral observer who admires Italian football
They deserved it throughout, unlike France who relayed on dives to get them free kicks and penalties to get them goals. Italy was the best and most consistant out of all of them, even in the final France was lucky to get a penalty, Italy scored via a corner, then hit the bar via a corner and had a dissalowed offside goal that did not look to be offside.
but when italy played austrailia you got that lucky penalty which was never in the solar system a penalty. yeah france dived but italy are worser. they bribe refs and they dive too much. france are more class then italy
Uh, rewatch that game. France clearly outplayed the Italians. Italy was lucky to beat Australia in the Round of 16 on a cheap penalty, then played UKRAINE. France, on the other hand, defeated Spain, Brazil, and Portugal to get to the final. Italy's competition failed miserably in comparison.
I agree.. but this tournament was destined for an Italian win.. France had already won too much, and they were VERY lucky to beat Azzurri in Euro 2000 final, when Italy were clearly better.. what goes around comes around.. also Germany won WC in Italia 90, so we won it in Germany, it's only appropriate.. plus the scandal gave the players that little something extra instead of distracting them.. all in all they deserved it while France's players had already won some tournaments (with luck)..
I gotta say, Italy had the relatively easier quarter-final against he Ukraine, even though tht still went to penalties. I dislike how Italy got Thorsten Frings banned at such a late stage on te Eve of the semi-final, but in the end, what you said about Italy winning in Germany like Germany did in Italy is true. Although, it hurt to see the Italians win in our tournament. But hey!
Ok, my mistake about the score. You certainly beat them well then. Nevertheless, the easiest game on paper out the lot of the quarter-finals. Also, 'our' tournament as in our tournamnt that we hosted! Just as it was 'your' tournament in 1990. It was our backyard, and we organised it, but we couldn't participate in the final - that hurt the most, just as you migh know, being an Italy fan during the 90s.
Don't think so. Facing Germany in Germany is extremely hard. It was an extremely tiring match, while on the other hand France had a easier semi-final with Portugal (beaten by Germany 3-0 later). In the final France were less tired, they had an amazing ball possession, but were capable of making no real threats to the goal. The only goal they succeeded to score was a penalty obtained by a dive. Italy on the other hand played less impressively, but scored a real goal and hit the bar also.
I'm guessing you conveniently forgot Zidane also hit the bar only minutes before he was sent off. Believe me, I have the game on tape and have seen it multiple times, and every time I've seen it, I've come away with the impression France deserved to win. Yes, winning vs. Germany was good, but their 2 previous games were against very inferior nations. Remember, in those 2 games France faced Spain and Brazil (certainly beats Australia and Ukraine, doesn't it?).
I've also watched it a couple of times. Italy played better in the first half and France played better in the second half. France overall had more chances than Italy, but failed to take advantage of them. Winning is winning mate, on the day it mattered most Italy won it, they should've won it 2-0 at full time, if not for the dubious penalty and a goal which was a goal but not given, but justice was done in penalties, France made a barrage of attacks, but the Italian defence stood firm.
he did not hit the bar, it was saved by Buffon.. and it doesn´t matter who you beat to get to the final, in the end France, and every other team in the world, wanted to be in Italy´s place when they lifted the Cup.. end of
I agree that it was no penalty when ITA played Australia, but the ref gave it. Both ITA and France were lucky regarding penalties and free kicks. ITA clearly deserved to win the cup, they scored from a corner, hit the crossbar, scored another goal in the second half, which was a goal, and France had a dubious penalty. It should've been Italy 2-0 at full time, but justice was done after penalties. France had chances but the Italian defence stood firm.
best time off my life has been when the world cup has been on 2002* and 2006*...i rember other but thoes 2 was the real 1s i rember were i watched every game !!...carnt w8 for 2010
man why does the world cup have to be every 4 years?in my opinion thats too long i think it should be like 3-3 1/2 years...but this world cup was awesome
great video, love the goethe. the whole thing captures the epic and ultra-magical atmosphere of the world cup very well. The tournament in 2006 was especially good too.
Although i was supporting England i thought all teams played well and Germany hosted a Excellent world maybe one of the best...now 2010 to Africa! Greetings from England/Northern Ireland
classy vid as usual for bbc, but to be honest, i prefer the ITV montage with the Nick Cave song "there she goes, my beautiful world" as the music...much more exciting!
I already loved Germany. I've never been there, and can't speak the language, but somehow I'm a Werder Bremen fan. I'm not sure why, but I think it's something to do with Pro Evo 4 and Real Madrid...
Although I'd rather Italy won which they did, France deserved to, France had a way harder route to the final: Spain-Brazil-Portugal. Italy only really had a hard game in the semis and were certainly not the best team in the competition.
but don't you think that either the Spanish or the Czech team should have deserved a better luck?? I would have preferred France winning rather than Italy...and now AC Milan has won the Champions ( I think that MIlan shouldn't have played, as Juventus did, but they are soooooooo lucky and sooooooo expert in their game style.........oh, men, this champion sucks...
I love football so much!! The World Cup always brings the whole world together and it is so awesome!! Fans mingling with each other. This WC brings so much memories, Argentina looking the best, Germany surely were going to the final, Australia and Ghana surprising, Magnin,Cambiasso,Ballack and Gerrard in tears, I love Football so much!! What would of made it perfect was England winning!
this was the best worlcup ever. I am so proud of my country. finally the people saw how nice we are and we are no nazis. thank god for this great year
Germany hosted a great world cup, well organised, no problem at all, perfect. And I've been to Germany myself and all the people were nice and your economy is probably the best in Europe. Whoever keeps calling you and other German people 'Nazis' are probably uneducated idiots, plus they are living in the past. This is the 21st century after all and be proud of where you come from! Greeting from England ;-)
Thanks for your words. I like them very much and it makes me proud that you liked the worldcup in Germany. It was such a great time: these different cultures, languages.... I will never forget it. Maybe the next worldcup in Europe will take place in England then I will come to you to discover your country, your culture and especially your language;-) Greeting from Germany
They do everything well, except Adverts. However, could NOT agree with you more. It's so obvious how good their sports montages are - check their montage for Liverpool VS West Ham. A great use of Sigur Ros's Hoppipolla.
Bring on Euro 2012. Can't wait for the draw on December 2nd.

The BBC stand alone when it comes to showcasing a sports event. Handel's See the Conquering hero comes and the last bit is by JS Bach.

Well you can't have England losing on penalties EVERY year can you? Otherwise it'll get boring.
fulham4eva2464 4 years ago 3
Exactly.
Plus the press need adequate time to mentally prepare their lambasting of the scapegoat for when England eventually fail.
Concocting lies takes a lot of effort.

classy vid as usual for bbc, but to be honest, i prefer the ITV montage with the Nick Cave song "there she goes, my beautiful world" as the music...much more exciting!

Italy only really had a hard game in the semis and were certainly not the best team in the competition.
wakeywakey1988 4 years ago
The final should have been Germany v Argentina definatley...
Rossheaton 4 years ago
but don't you think that either the Spanish or the Czech team should have deserved a better luck??

What would of made it perfect was England winning!
dazcouz 4 years ago
Yeah the Germans were really good. They were unlucky against Italy. If it had gone to penelties, they would have probably got through.

this was the best worlcup ever. I am so proud of my country. finally the people saw how nice we are and we are no nazis. thank god for this great year
german3171989 5 years ago
We haven't accused you of being 'nazis' for 60 years. This isn't why you hosted the World Cup, because the WC is about bringing countries together.
Lysimachus 4 years ago

G.F Handel "see the conquering hero come" and JS Bach "Jesu joy of man's desire" on there as well

I've got the first part. It's Mendelssohn - 'The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave)'
The rest of the clip merges into the track the BBC used for the title openining of each show. I don't have a clue who it is.

Smetana From Ma Vlast Vltava Handel Judas Maccabeus Bach Cantata Sleepers Awake Wagner Gotterdammerung I thin or Mendelssohn Die Schone Melusine
Great use of Goethe. If theres one thing the BBC does well its sports montages.
