It's funny- there are versions of Laid (good song) and other later songs out there that have 1 million plus views and seem to be Euro anthems but I'm always drawn back to this early raw stuff. Man, this is real bona fide James at the cutting edge. Glad I was there to experience it. Also glad for the upload. Good job fowlersmate!
totally awesome. Paul Gilbertson never gets the credit he deserves for starting, shaping and leading this band. Paul & Gavan never get the credit for their instrumental prowess.
This is my favourite era of James - the most intriguing. Somewhere there's a version of Discipline from the same set.
any offers for any of the records of james i have?...7" single folk lore, whats the world and fire so close (signed)7" if things were perfect hymn from a village...12" sit down 5 songs by james(all of the tracks above are on it...)i have the one man clapping lp (mint and many more...i just dont have a turntable anymore)
my brother was at this gig...i first saw them supporting the smiths at the palace and they blew my mind in fact they are still the only support act i have ever seen get an encore..they were responsible for some of the best nights out i have ever had in my life...sadly they were never the same after that sit down nonsense and gavans departure...incidently to my mind this is the only footage of the original line up and sadly the guitarist (paul) past away in the early 80s
wonderful! i wish there was more stuff from the stutter/pre-stutter era, i used to have loads of stuff on tape in the olden days, live, bbc sessions, piccadilly radio etc
I had 7" of Peel Sessions with 'Discipline' on it. I sold it on Ebay a couple of months ago, after converting it to mp3s. If I can find it, I'll send you a copy (can't promise it'll be any less "scratchy" though).
Love this... thanks for posting

James early singles and first album were so great. So far away from the bloated stadium rock idiocy they moved on to.

Paul never passed away, he just left the band due to heavy drug use. He was last heard of driving taxi's in Manchester.

Is this from the Factory vid? I'm sure I've seen 1983/4 footage of them doing 'Discipline' at the Hacienda, too. Same gig?

Yep I think so. Would love to see 'Discipline' as I only have an old scratchy version on cd somewhere.
