I defer to you 39sharman. I've just checked my Arsenal history and it says the Cup Final was on 29 April, and Arsenal played two more League games - 5-2 at Stoke on 6 May and 2-0 home to Portsmouth, listed as being on 3 May. You say 2 May. Maybe the book's wrong.
Anyway, if I'd checked the history before posting, I'd have read in the text that Compton played - and brilliantly - against Portsmouth - the champions-to-be - though it was Peter Goring who got the goals.
@simonvaddan Just as a matter of historical interest, Arsenal wore their old-gold cupfinal shirts for the game against Pompey on 3rd May 1950.Prior to kick off, Arsenal had their official team photo taken with the cup in front of them.God, where have the last 60 years gone?
Wish Match Of The Day was presented like this.

This was Denis Compton's last game for Arsenal, and he famously required a half-time whisky to keep him going for the 90 minutes!
