Regarding having fully customizable builds in MMOs: Fallen Earth does it very well. You spend points in skills, which unlocks the use of abilities at certain values. You can pick and mix whatever values of whatever combination of stats and abilities you think will give you an edge, up to a maximum value of points.
Two weapon specializations, healing and crafting? No problem. Single weapon, high DPS and debuffing? Sure. Crafting, 1 weapon and being extremely adept at escaping danger? No problem.
FFXI is a perfect example of a game that did away with the need for alts (mules excluded of course). You could eventually have everything available on your main character but restricting your ability to change 'on the fly' seems to be a nice middle ground imo.
TB - Thank you so much for responding to that particular gentleman's email about the person complaining about the difficulties in MMO's. It sickens me that people think that they need to have handouts and refuse to put work towards getting items, even if that challenge is finding a specific way up a cliff, like in Rift. @TotalHalibut i wonder from last weeks topic u said every aspect of a MMO should be fun or dont play it. i think this is an impossible ideal nothing is always fun no matter wat people can get annoyed with any manner of thing to do with any aspect of any game (any lol) i mean i have recently become a raid leader of my WoW guild and i have found the behind the scenes work ridiculous between us we spend 20hrs a week setting up 4 every raid and not every second is fun however the raids r (NO SPACE)
I do just need to say that in SWToR that you don't have a minimum with every advanced class. Sentinel/Marauder and Gunslinger/Sniper only have DPS skill trees. If you just mean base class, then there are classes that have a choice of all three, Bounty Hunter/Trooper and Inquisitor/Consular.
Certainly datacrons are not mandatory to get, at least for now. However, if you compared this game to WoW, which you should, higher end guilds tend to ask their players to do these kind of things to get that little extra power. For example, I was JC/BS in WoW, as a dps, and when I applied for a guild they actually asked me to switch, which with levelling and everything would have taken hours upon hours and lots of gold.
I am not saying it's too hard, and yes, that guy is a moron.
EvE online being the only MMORPG where you can in theory unlock "everything" the only limit is the time... I think Final Fantasy Online had a system where you could switch between classes and level them seperate aswell.
Try Eden Eternal. It is a rather good MMO that allows you to freely switch between all classes and rank them up separately with some base stats preventing you from dying immediately from playing a relatively new class. I've had plenty of fun with that title and may in fact return to it sometime soon.
Dots Per Inch, or something like that, it basically affects mouse sensitivity. High sensitivity is great for things that require more precise control and quick reflexes.
Finalfantasy both XI and XIV allowed you to play pretty much every class with a single character. XI only didn't allow you to work on all crafting skills. XIV allows you to do both all crafters and all classes.
One of the things that i hate about MMO is huge stats. Health more then 10k, dmg more then 4k. Then whats a point in having +1 str which gives you 100 hp, when you have 20k health, and minimum dmg is like 1k. Thats why i play moba, where stats makes sense.
@00Krohnos I have played that game for years and it sucks... its sad because everything in the game except gameplay is so great, but then the gameplay comes and completely murders all the fun.

And as for the MMO bit with a single character doing everything? FFXI. Had it. 1 Character could do everything. Could switch between any.
The difference in graphics between a pc and console isn't all that much especially if you use an hd tv. You yourself have commented on the fact that the difference is hardly noticeable . I don't think you should slander the graphics on consoles so much , they really aren't bad at all.
@Som3on3p3rson I think it was more the case of, he didn't participate because TB did. That way, they can win first prize twice and give it all to charity, instead of 1 first prize and 1 second.
I really liked the way FFXI did the class system, you had one character, you have the basic classes unlocked at the start, and advanced classes you earn through quests at level 30(? forgot), and changing class was no harder than going into your house and switching your main and sub class
You were talking about weapon models and I want to ask everyone, did anyone ever get the sniper scope for the shotgun in BFBC2? It was the biggest scope ever and put onto a shotgun which was big to start with...... I couldn't see what was infrount of me half the time.
The Secret World is an MMORPG with no levels and no classes. You have 500 skills, and you can learn them all if you wish. It's actually looking pretty cool, imho.
FOV 65 is just absolutely re-freaking-diculously small. I won't ever play those games. You get hit half the time while not seeing a thing. That's just fucked.
FOV 110 is not extreme. Back in the day of Quakeworld (Quake1 optimized for network), FOV 100-120 was normal and that was on a 4:3 17" monitor, not even a widescreen 24"+
FFXI did the "all class unlocked" with it's Job system. If you spent the time you could play every Job on 1 character. Didn't cost you to change, just went home and chose a different Job. Granted you still had to level the Jobs up since they all started at 1.
Hey TB. Could you give recommendations on the Weekly deals/Daily deals on steam or/and gamersgate on the mailbox. I think i speak for everyone with this idea!
TB, your rant on Datacrons and effort is a huge part of why I love you. Really, man. If only everyone had half your common sense, the world'd be a better place :D
As a PC player, it was very difficult to situate myself with the 65 FOV in MW after spending years in 90 FOV. I complained a lot about this at the time I was playing and getting accustomed. It's a decision they made, and it has real impact on the way the game is played. If you don't like it you don't have to play it. Would I have changed it (early on) if I could? Yes absolutely. But it would have altered the game completely, and on a level not all of the other players have agreed to.
Isn't The Secret World going to be exactly what the guy in the last question was talking about? As far as I understand there aren't classes in that game, you just build your characters the way you want.
@ampdgmr No, it's not. Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive fan of GW2, it is my number 1 anticipated game, but you don't have the same freedom to create a character the way The Secret World is offering. It is exactly the type of system the last letter was asking for, total freedom to use whatever skills you want. In GW2 you don't have set roles, but your weapons and class limit you to certain skills. That's not a bad thing, but it's not near the level of freedom that was being discussed.
@Mothhive Yeah, from what I've seen, that's exactly what it is. You choose your character and that's you. Nothing hard about it, but lets see how TSW works out before we judge it the perfect system.
Star Wars Galaxies Pre-NGE was amazing in terms of non-class play. Dozens of professions running on different kinds of experience, where you can have multiple professions (I don't recall how many, I want to say 4.5? mastered). So if you wanted to be a bounty hunter/teras kasa master who can heal a little from the medic tree, you can do so. Alts were still viable after unlocking Jedi, or to have people with different skills without releveling.
I think Nicholas pretty much described Mabinogi as far as class creation goes. It's been around since 2004 in South Korea, 2008 in North America, and 2010 in Europe. My point being, Second Generation MMOs have been around for quite a while.
For that final question, I would suggest looking at a game that goes by the name of 'The Secret World' over on Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
Upcoming MMO that looks very cool and may well have classless gameplay. Read the articles, looks amazing! Would be cool to hear TB's views on the game as well, it has been met with some scepticism that it will actually deliver what it promises, but the RPS guys seem pretty pleased with it :]
One should definitely not be able to change the FOV in games. Take a look at Modern Warfare, as you mention. The game's FOV is intentionally restrictive in order to promote the use of melee and close range attacks. Whether this was designed or unintentional, it has the effect of making the checking of corners and blind spots part of the challenge of the game. I found this to be very odd, coming from the large FOV of the quake/source engine, but eventually I got used to it and appreciated it.
"Also, the only pure damage dealer in SWtOR is the Sniper class." Remember to put pressure that it is an Advanced Class and not a class. I was thinking the same thing, but when you say it you should really bring out that it's an AC as well.
TB on the king of the web site (see what I did there) I got to the point where I was about to earn an extra ten votes to the ten bonus votes that I already have, but it made me spend the bonus votes before allowing me to spend the daily votes to allow me to get 10 more bonus votes, it would appear that they don't want people utilising the kind of tactics you have in mind.
@HellsingRuler It looks like a small box that shines partially in flashy colours. As an example, for sith inquisitor you can find first one close to where you get the daily elite quest in first area, behind a wall.
I understand what you're saying about FOV settings. When I play TF2, I find that with a high FOV setting, it does allow you to see enemies flanking you, but it takes the focus away from what's staring you in the face, and not to mention the way enemies seem further away. 90 is just about the best FOV I've found,
I personally like Quake Live 130fov more than the 90 of TF2. Maybe it's because of my low sensitivity(~32cm/360 degrees in-game in both Quake Live and TF2) and the unwillingness to move my mouse around all the time just to check places. 90 is about the minimum I can play with like that -_-
swotr is not by far the first mmo to put the advanced class system in place, for example nostale ( some game i played yonks ago) did that, dragons nest did that, example the archer could go acrobat or sniper, so you know it isn't really a new idea, but i AM a bit dissapointed this isn't in more games. Technically WoW also has this feature with the talent tree, as it is kind of similar as you can spec into something more specific. But anyway, i do enjoy these videos :D
Final Fantasy 11 and 14 both allow you to create a character and swap your class/sub-class at your house. You still had to level them and gear them separately but it could all technically be done with 1 character. And I believe there are a few pure DPS classes in SWTOR, one being Sniper, I only have 3 DPS specs not tank/healing sadly.
yeah I have a 9 year old pc thats upgraded to maybe 1 or 2 years ahead...it sucks XD

The difference in graphics between a pc and console isn't all that much especially if you use an hd tv. You yourself have commented on the fact that the difference is hardly noticeable . I don't think you should slander the graphics on consoles so much , they really aren't bad at all.

@LouisKing995 The difference is pretty big actually

'He was kind enough to not campaign in the last one so that we were able to win.'
What?
So he was like: 'If I compete here you won't win, TB, so I'll just join the next one.'
What?
Did it really happen like that or is that just a misunderstanding? 'Cause I don't no Cap'nS that way...

@Som3on3p3rson I think it was more the case of, he didn't participate because TB did. That way, they can win first prize twice and give it all to charity, instead of 1 first prize and 1 second.

I really liked the way FFXI did the class system, you had one character, you have the basic classes unlocked at the start, and advanced classes you earn through quests at level 30(? forgot), and changing class was no harder than going into your house and switching your main and sub class
cyrexFFXI 1 month ago
In regards to the 3rd question: didn't FF11 have the ability to change your class at will?

You were talking about weapon models and I want to ask everyone, did anyone ever get the sniper scope for the shotgun in BFBC2? It was the biggest scope ever and put onto a shotgun which was big to start with...... I couldn't see what was infrount of me half the time.

The Secret World is an MMORPG with no levels and no classes. You have 500 skills, and you can learn them all if you wish. It's actually looking pretty cool, imho.

Actually, Sith Marauder and IA Sniper (and their Republic counterparts) are pure DPS classes in SWTOR.

FOV 65 is just absolutely re-freaking-diculously small. I won't ever play those games. You get hit half the time while not seeing a thing. That's just fucked.
SinisterSkip 1 month ago
FOV 110 is not extreme. Back in the day of Quakeworld (Quake1 optimized for network), FOV 100-120 was normal and that was on a 4:3 17" monitor, not even a widescreen 24"+
FOV 80 and 90 still feels limited to me.
SinisterSkip 1 month ago
FFXI did the "all class unlocked" with it's Job system. If you spent the time you could play every Job on 1 character. Didn't cost you to change, just went home and chose a different Job. Granted you still had to level the Jobs up since they all started at 1.

Mothhive 1 month ago 24
@Mothhive no...gw2 is gonna be like that
ampdgmr 1 month ago
@ampdgmr No, it's not. Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive fan of GW2, it is my number 1 anticipated game, but you don't have the same freedom to create a character the way The Secret World is offering. It is exactly the type of system the last letter was asking for, total freedom to use whatever skills you want. In GW2 you don't have set roles, but your weapons and class limit you to certain skills. That's not a bad thing, but it's not near the level of freedom that was being discussed.
Mothhive 1 month ago
@Mothhive
true but The Secret Worlds has AWFULL animations it's really sad D:
it would be an awesom game.
Laroac 1 month ago
@Mothhive Yeah, from what I've seen, that's exactly what it is. You choose your character and that's you. Nothing hard about it, but lets see how TSW works out before we judge it the perfect system.

Not every class in TOR is hybrid. Marauder can olny be a dps.

Jedi sentinel in TOR is pure dps, there is no way to heal or tank.

Penguinator3ooo 1 month ago
@Penguinator3ooo Agreed on that, Mabinogi is exactly what Nicholas is hinting (Although it's a cute "anime" game, so it might not appeal everyone.)
Although, it's quite funny how it's been out for such a long time, still alive and expending, yet ignored. :P

The fact that SWtOR has 3 full difficulty levels for dungeons. This is a great thing. Also, the only pure damage dealer in SWtOR is the Sniper class.

@TheGreatRakatan

I understand what you're saying about FOV settings. When I play TF2, I find that with a high FOV setting, it does allow you to see enemies flanking you, but it takes the focus away from what's staring you in the face, and not to mention the way enemies seem further away. 90 is just about the best FOV I've found,
pokemon2539 1 month ago
@pokemon2539
I personally like Quake Live 130fov more than the 90 of TF2. Maybe it's because of my low sensitivity(~32cm/360 degrees in-game in both Quake Live and TF2) and the unwillingness to move my mouse around all the time just to check places. 90 is about the minimum I can play with like that -_-
Airact 1 month ago
swotr is not by far the first mmo to put the advanced class system in place, for example nostale ( some game i played yonks ago) did that, dragons nest did that, example the archer could go acrobat or sniper, so you know it isn't really a new idea, but i AM a bit dissapointed this isn't in more games.
