@AngelikavonDeutschla ... You see 5 acres in the videos. Go online and find a planting guide for your area or contact your local county agent. I have some about a foot tall that I expect to make before the first killing frost. I'm in Zone 8........Donald
Ok, how long does it take for my cucumber and squash to come up (planted seeds)? I'm beginning to wonder about them... Been in the ground for about 5 or 6 days now. Also, how often should I water the seeds and plants once they come up? Thank You Again!
Ok, I'll be planting cucumbers soon. How much of this wire do I need, how much does it cost, and how many t-posts will I need? I want to do exactly as you have done. Nothing different (because I know yours works). I'll be planting a row of Straight Eight Cucumbers about 80 ft. long.
Also, will this same set-up work for squash and tomatoes, each planted on an 80 ft. long row (using the same wire)?
@231MasseyFerguson ...I now use concrete reinforcement wire because it’s much taller. Expensive but should last for many years. You can use it for any vegetable that vines. I cut it in 6 ft. lengths and make the cages, use tie wire to attach the ends.
For cucumber use one cage, one T-post and plant several inside the cage. 80 feet of cucumber will produce enough to feed a small town. I find several hills is plenty, same for squash.....Donald
@webcajun Ok, got my seeds today but it's too wet to plant... My plans are to plant cucumber, squash, and eggplants ((all seeds)) all on the same row. It's the only row I have left that's available. Do I have to worry about "cross pollination" between all the vegetables? Or does cross pollination only occur among different Varieties of the Same Vegetable?? Do you understand what I'm asking?
What time of the year are you doing this? I just planted my cucumbers, okra, jalepeno, tomatoes, squash seeds in small pots. Am I too late or early in doing so.
@txgardener6740 ... you're right on time. Never started okra, squash or cucumber in pots but the tomatoes and jalepeno mentioned should be ready to transplant into the garden in about 8 weeks. Wait till all danger of frost has passed before transplanting. The okrs, squash and cucumber can be seeded directly into the garden around that time (April - May).......Donald
We live in Arkansas and I absolutely love your videos!!! I'm 24 and a stay at home mom and when we start our garden we use alot of your ideas and it makes it alot easier for me to take care of our 2 yr old and still tend to the garden while hubbys at work!! We try to have one big enough that we don't have to buy any store bought veggies, it doesn't always turn out that way but we try!
@redneckbarbi1 ... it does take awhile to figure out how much of each vegetable your family uses / needs to grow. I try to plant a little extra just in case........Donald
@redneckbarbi1 I'm a 26 year old male from South Louisiana. Your husband should be proud. He is lucky to have a woman like you... Not trying to offend or upset you, or anybody else, but I just couldn't resist posting this...
6 seeds per cage area, do you go back and thin it out? I planted two seeds and so I've got several cages with two plants right next to each other, very healthy looking plants. Should I thin it out?
@webcajun - My seed pack says 4 feet between seeds; and so I'm curious to know what I can get away with ;) Did you thin it out, or did you leave them all?
@saintveil ... I'd say each cage could support 3-4 plants with no problems. If all 6 seeds come up thin them out. The year I used cages that were bigger than those in this vid and had no problems. Made a ton of cucumbers........Donald
@slacker361 ... It’s all about planting a seed in fertile soil, giving it a little water and plenty sun. Stick to the basics and keep things as simple as they really are…..Donald
Where do you get those wire cages? I live in Alexandria, LA. The tomato cages at the local garden centers are too weak. I'm a city gal who has just discovered she loves having a vegie garden in the back yard. I have 4 8x8 plots overflowing with summer vegies, blueberries, figs, herbs, even melons!
@Ladyandthepug ... I purchased a roll of fencing, cut the wire and made them myself. Try to find 4 or 5 ft. tall wire, that works much better. Try a hardware or feed and seed store...... Donald
Hey Donald, here's a tip for putting down your T posts. If you have the front end loader for your tractor use that to push them into the ground. You can also use it with a short chain to pull the Tposts up latter. Works great!
Nice, simple method that makes good use of space -- I'm going to try it... Thanks for the demo! (And it's nice to see someone on YouTube who answers questions the viewers have!)
You can use concrete reinforcement wire or fencing. Better if the holes are 6x6 so you can get your hand in there and remove the cucumbers........ Donald
Don, what variety you grow? You have any problems with the tips getting pointy and the fruit looking like a pointy golf ball when it gets hot at the end of May or middle of June?
O.k. I wish my dirt was as easily as yours. I am in San Antonio, Tx. Last year's (summer 2009) drought left my soil condition so hard the tiller wouldn't even break up the soil. But when it rains you gain 4 inches in height walking from the door to the back fence, from mud caking up on the bottom of my shoes. Sadly put! (Black clay type). My yard too small for a tractor. What can I do too my dirt so it can be easier too work?
Im in west virginia we're just seed starting now, my question is , is it wise to start any vine plant in pots or should I just wait and put them straight in the ground. Thanks, Just learnin
In my opinion any seed that you can plant directly into the garden do it, unless you just want to mess around and start them in pots to have something to do...... Donald
May I ask how I supposed to kick those ants out of my garden beds? I tried some oil and OTKO spray mixtures but doesn't seems like work. Those ants dug out all the seed overnight.
Sounds like you've got a real ant problem. Go to your garden center and buy some ant poison in the bags. Look on the bag and determine how much area it will control so you'll know you have enough for your garden. Apply it and then ..... water it in if that's what it calls for. I use a commercial spray but you would need an applicators license for that.
Allowing them to vine on something keeps them off the ground (no half white - half green cucumbers) and they will grow straighter because they are hanging.
For pest control I use a mixture of Sevin Dust and Sulfur. I use as little as I can get by with. Cabbage will get a little Sevin Dust until right before the heads start forming, then nothing after that. Snap Beans get no pest control after they start flowing.
They weren't a problem last year. This year may be a whole different story. We'll just have to wait and see. Some of my first beans will be ready to pick in a couple of days, that is if I can get in the garden after this 5.4" rain we just got yesterday.
Wow, I didn't know cucumbers needed support as well. Thanks for sharing this with us. Do the cucumbers and tomatos attach to the support automatically (like a vine growing that self attaches)or do you have to tie them up as they grow?
Cucumbers will attach and grow up just about any support. Last year I used crop netting between support post. I had extra tomato rings this year so I'm using them instead.
Tomatoes don't vine like cucumbers (at least the varieties I plant). The cages are to support the main plant itself thus keeping the tomatoes off the ground. Some people use a wooden stake driving next to each plant and tie the plant to the stake as it grows. To me, cages are a lot less work.
You're right, I've done it that way in the past when I had taller cages. My cages are short, 32 inches, so I really can't afford to lose any height. . I found that once the vines start attaching themselves to the cage and get some size to them, they don't move around anymore. After a few rains they also settle some. I guess it depends on the type of soil you're working with as well.
Cucumbers are vines that will grow up just about any support. It's not uncommon to see them planted along a fence row. Some also use crop netting between post. Cucumbers that are allowed to vine up some type of support usually grow straighter. Give it a try.

Cucumbers will attach and grow up just about any support. Last year I used crop netting between support post. I had extra tomato rings this year so I'm using them instead.

on your wire cages if you cut off the bottom ring leaving the verticle supports in place u can sink it into the ground for better support.
beutifullady 3 years ago
You're right, I've done it that way in the past when I had taller cages. My cages are short, 32 inches, so I really can't afford to lose any height. . Mine always seem to blow over I ussually use hardwood stakes instead of U or T posts. Maybe ill try them this year instead of the hardwood stakes.
beutifullady 3 years ago
A "T" post driven 12-14 inches into tilled ground should work unless you have real loose soil. If so, drive them a little deeper.
webcajun 3 years ago
Cucumbers are vines that will grow up just about any support. It's not uncommon to see them planted along a fence row. Some also use crop netting between post. Cucumbers that are allowed to vine up some type of support usually grow straighter. Give it a try.
