Seriously, Moulin Rouge is not my favorite film, but the end of this scene is probably the most brilliant writing of a movie ever. At the end of the movie the Moulin Rouge is closed, Satine's dead and Christian's penniless. Materially, the Duke won. However, if the duke had left the gun alone, everyone would have considered him the winner morally and materially.

She pretended to be in love with the Duke in order to take a lot of his money, then cried about how now she wasn't free to go sleep with some kid. I would never do that to a guy. But if I did, I would tell him in private and beg his forgiveness, and say I understood if he withdrew the cash, or even if he forced me out of the theater. And I would tell him he was better off without me. I would not instead further humiliate the man by singing about how happy I was onstage. Whata whore.
