I suspect one of the reasons it is slow is that it uses motions used by living things. Maybe if you could run some AI to get it to automatically invent and test ways to move about, it could find better ones. Especially since it has a cable and thus energy efficiency doesn't matter.

to put it simply, the basic way how the thing moves is not the most difficult thing to understand. It's a bunch of rollers connected with movable joints. You could build a non-robotic 1 using lego joints and pieces.
