Oh...come ON! His audition is mediocre...he's just beautiful in it! I think he had a shaky start in GG - the character was a cliche and he played it by numbers...at first. He then, of course, took it to depths the producers could never have envisaged. He basically started out as a bit part, and ended up the leading man. He's just run away with that part! Remember him on the roof arrogantly shouting:"I'm chuck bass!" and then realising the truth, broken..."and nobody cares.." Well, all do now.

I think that once he got to playing the actual character he took it to places nobody else would have. He really deepened the darkness of Chuck's character, even the underlying darkness that doesn't truly come out until later in the series. I don't think anyone else could have done it quite like Ed.
