Scientists do have an answer:

The phrenic nerve wraps around a rather lot of our anatomy. It has its evolutionary origins in amphibians as the nerve that would detect water and quickly shut the larynx, open the gills, and draw in water for processing.

Unfortunately in us mammals, it's prone to misfiring, and as a result: hiccups.

hey cutie, thx for the info.. what "technique" do you use to get rid of your hiccups?^^ i usually just wait and see if it goes away.. if that doesnt work, i drink a glas of water while standing on my head.. not easy but it works.. and fun! xD
