I played banjo, and later guitar, in a folk trio back in the 60's. Peter Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio were a huge influence on us. Mary was queen of the folk singers to us. When she died, the world just wasn't quite the same as it was before. We're still singing their tunes at Hootnannys 40 some years later.
To answer the question about the microphone for Mary, she didn't need one as she had the ability to project her voice, She is probably the most powerful singer I have ever heard, with harmony and range that is extremely uncommon and rare, and could project her voice with absolute clarity and tone. She will be missed, but she is away, she is not gone. She is with God.
Peter and Paul carry on, even though Mary passed. She was so loved by all around her and Peter and Paul and all of us that met her. She has left us to be with God and her trials are all behind her. I am so proud of Peter and Paul for carrying on, even as difficult as it must be. Fortunately I have had the opportunity to speak with Peter, take pictures with him and my 20 year old daughter (who lost her mother to ovarian cancer when she was 7), and we met Noel at his home. Great People!
Thank you Peter,Paul and Mary....I've loved your music almost all my life..starting with Puff, of course. You still thrill me today... Get goose pimples. ;-)
@cschoon1213 usually in most barber shop quartet/(three person) harmony bands like this it was traditional to do in this case use two to make the harmonies seem closer together..four peopl still two mikes with two people each side..etc.
@GothMetalhead999 You are correct. If you watch several songs performed on the same show you will see that Mary will sometimes be in the middle, sometimes on the right, and sometimes on the left. It all depends on the song and whether she will be soloing or harmonizing or both. They knew exactly what was needed to get the sound they were going for and the 2 mikes made it easier. No fancy technology, just 3 people who were very aware of their own voice and listened to each other while singing.
@buriedinvinyl Back in the day the setup here was a fine way to record a nice stereo track without a lot of fancy mixing. It actually produced a very realistic spacial effect.
It is not about who's mike it is - just a couple mikes separated like a couple of ears.
@buriedinvinyl Close your eyes and listen to their balance - it sounds "right". Each piece is where it ought to be for each song. When I set up mics for small ensembles, "less is more" is the first rule I look to for guidance. Her voice is easily the loudest, and because it's higher it naturally travels farther, thus she simply didn't need a mic of her own.
@buriedinvinyl They rotate positions with each song, so at times, each one of them is without their own mic. Besides, the mic'ing method used helped get the sound of the harmonies correct.
@buriedinvinyl In folk music and bluegrass music, it has always been a tradition to use one and at the most two mikes........the singers lean in to control the volume of their voices as part of the mix of three part and sometimes four part harmony...
What a pleasure this group was/is in every way. I met Peter Yarrow when I was a shy young girl in the 8th grade and though there were dozens of people waiting for his autograph he made me feel like the only person in the room. "Hi - welcome! Thank you for coming. What's your name...how old are you, sweetheart?...Well some people are very beautiful at 13 and you are one of them." That's a moment of kindness that will never, ever be forgotten.
Thanks so much for posting this... if I was a drinker I would be crying in my beer! Peter, Paul and Mary were the best ever. I still have a copy of their 25th Anniversay show - it was incredible!! And didn`t Paul Stookey get even better with age?? Wow! So many memories! Thanks again!!

I like PPM, but this song was a terrible match for them. It's about a scoundrel who travels from town to town taking advantage of women, leaving them behind like dirt. It makes no sense to have a woman singing melody on it. You need a rugged male voice to portray the character. Lightfoot's version was a great match. On the other hand, PPM did a great version of Early Morning Rain, also by Lightfoot.
I remember when this song hit the top of the charts when I was a high school junior. I got to see them in concert several times, then Gordon Lightfoot a few years later. Great years, those!
@cschoon1213 yes and even before nixon, was joe mccarthy, who went after pete seger, with abandon. then clinton, called him one of our greatest americans and recognized him with a televised national award gala. a conservetive mind only sees black and white and mostly it's more black then white

@BerkeleyMews7 I agree completely! Can you believe that glorious sound was only three voices and two instruments? True artists; they felt it, they sang it. How I miss this kind of talent!
@ronnogold Totally agree, but one thing most people forget, they also had a bass player. His name escapes me, but he was with them for years and in my opinion was a big part of their sound. You see him at the end off to the right.
This song has Czech words also and it was sung during the communist government. It was like: well, you're christian, but what does your heart really want? To have a nice car and good job or to be true and a good man?
