  • You need to do more animations like this.

  • The animation looks very similar to the animation from the really famous "In with the In Crowd" segment on Sesame Street of all places. Same artist or art style?

  • @synthastia Yes you got it right, I did both pieces.

  • @laughingsal Heh, this always kinda reminded me of "Above it All," but a more surreal, creepy version!

  • Is this the same Hell Gluey and Max almost went to near the end of "Face Like a Frog"? I hope they did make it to Miami Beach or else they would meet Ethel's fate.

  • since Warner Bros. owns the screenplays of the original series (that explains the movie) How about Cartoon Network should make "The Twilight Zone: The Animated Series". It should be about animated retellings of the original episodes or original stories by cartoon directors like Maxwell Atoms, Danny Antonucchi, John R. Dilworth, etc. In fact if you were in charge of doing such a episode, which episode of the original series would you remake in your style?

  • @TechnoHajikelist I'm done with animation. It's probably not a bad idea for a production.

  • @laughingsal

I actually had no idea you retired from animation. Also if Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network managed to make a series based on Mad Magazine" then sooner or later they should make a anthology series and give it a "Twilight Zone" license on it.

  • @TechnoHajikelist Well sometimes there's not much difference between long unemployed and retired!

  • This scared the crap out of me when I was little.

  • i actually liked the "it's a good life" part of the Twilight Zone movie, but this part was a bit disturbing

  • Another fun thing to think about is that Nancy Cartwright got the chance to be at the other end of the stick as Bart Simpson (again, the character she voices) gets to parody the kid in one of The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror stories. :D

  • yeah, this fucked me up when I was little.... now it reminds me a lot of Superjail!!!!!

  • this was so creepy as a child of me watching it..even now..its still creepy

  • Classic Pre-Gremlins Joe Dante. This and his movie The Howling were probably his biggest claims to fame.

  • Animated or illustrated horror has a power all its own.

  • haven't seen that episode since I was a kid.80's twighlight at it's best.right up there with the john lithgow plane episode. His family thought him a freak and were afraid of what he could do and it hurt and angered him.he knew he wasn't loved and thought a monster.they were trying to leave him so he trapped them.a kid with major abandonment issues.very good.twighlight zone, outerlimits amazing stories, errie indiana were the shows to watch when t.v was actually entertaining.

  • Why does a wolf change into some lizard/dinosaur thing? It's so surreal! :P

  • LMAO this was funny!

  • That is...... FUCKING SCARY!!!!!

  • I own one of the animation cels to this sequence. The cel is right after the monster swallows her and before he burps. Beautiful and complex!

  • @ronniereject Those cels were inked by Mary Cain, who started out at Columbia in the 30's. There will never be cels inked so beautifully again. Lost art and obsolete technique.

  • @laughingsal At least you got to work with the greats!

  • Such an amazingly creepy sequence! I once had a nightmare about this scene as a kid. lol

  • god this scene makes me so depressed for some reason. it's just thinking about what it would be like to be her, i would rather kill myself than have that happen to me

  • This scene scared the hell out of me as a kid, but was so deliciously twisted that I kept having to watch it on my old burned out VHS copy! Your work's been a huge influence on mine, Sally. Thanks for the inspiration (and nightmares :-) )

  • @asjmorris I never imagined this sequence had such a weird effect on those who viewed it. Good luck in the future and no nightmares.

  • Bill Mumy would praise this kid for what had just occurred :)

  • Holy shit Sal, you did this? My childhood . . . holy shit, awesome =D

  • I hadnt seen this movie since I was around 16...wow this scene is crazy! The concept is so twisted, but its brilliant. Are their anymore twisted animations similiar to this?

  • @jsberger well some peeps think all my films are twisted.

  • Dont have a cow, Ethel

  • Man, this video is amazing!! This one TZ story has always been my favorite. You rarely see cartoons actually be very scary! I mean this is really freaky stuff! It's so well done! Really amazing job on this! The designs and animation are amazing. Love the scary sad faces on the the fire people in the background. So creepy! I love it! I really wish I could see those painted cels. Those would be fun to see.

  • @JackrabbitMcGee Thanks for your thoughtful comments. These cels are actually the best of any of the work I've done. They were hand inked in color lines by a pro, Mary Cain, who started working in the 1930's!

  • @laughingsal Wow, really cool! Thanks for the info. The cartoon actually feels like it's been done in the 1930s almost, sort of similar to early Fleischers' cartoons. Did those cartoons inspire you to make this? I wonder if Mary Cain has done any ink work for the Fleischers' in the 30s. I sure wouldn't be surprised if she did!

Love your other work by the way!

  • Cool. I wish that was some of the people I hate in that cartoon world.....

  • My brain has now stored these images away for future nightmares. When this movie was released, I'm sure the same thing happened to hundreds of thousands of other unwitting victims.

THANKS SAL. THANKS A LOT! >:O

  • @ZOMG1103 NO REFUNDS!

  • lol

  • Who animated this?

  • @Toonmaster707 I designed and directed it, and Mark Kausler did most of the animation.

  • @laughingsal Wow! It's very good. Reminds me of Face like a Frog.

  • @laughingsal Kausler's quite a good guy to pair up with!

  • WOW you probably scared a lot of kids with this one!!! Looks GREAT

  • 1983*

  • Aye carumba!

  • Does anyone know if there's a name for that style of cartoons, or any sort of information about it?

  • yes, that's right Katana991

    ccipollini1984, that's awful! sorry!

  • Was this part of the movie based on that one episode called "It's A Good Life," where a kid with psychic powers pretty much forces people to do whatever he wants?

  • @Katana991 Yeah.

  • I coulden't watch Looney Toons for like a month after I saw this....

  • Bowser? XD

  • It's true, Nancy Cartwright did go to Cartoon Land here, but came back five years later to become the voice of Bart Simpson on "The Simpsons."

  • Oddly, I think the mad scientisty wolf thingy actually looked alot scarier then the dragony thingy he turns into.

    Must be that bloody axe.

Also not quite sure where that kid ever saw cartoons like that back in the eighties, I'm pretty sure this type of cartoon came around a bit later, at least in the western world.

  • A Tree House Of Horror episode was based off of this scene, wasn't it?

  • @Treyworld Sort of. There was one episode of Treehouse of Horrors where they actually did a parody more of the original Twilight Zone episode, with Bart as the boy with the freaky powers.

  • @Treyworld In another episode, which I think was more of a parody of the movie "Stay Tuned" starring John Ritter, Bart and Lisa use a radioactive carbon rod to power up the TV remote after the batteries die, and they end up in the cartoon world of Itchy and Scratchy. They laugh at Scratchy being hurt by Itchy, and the cat and mouse pair up to go at Bart and Lisa for laughing at Scratchy's pain. Bart laughs, thinking it's not real, until an axe nicks his head, and draws blood.

  • D'oh!!!!

  • lmfao...I love the face that comes out at 0:32

  • @frootloop09

I agree! I like that face, it reminds me of a luchador mask.

I also remember that face actually looking scary (and being a sun, must have been the way it moves) , but it mostly just looks kind of amusing.

Odd that that dragony thingy would have ghost-thingies living in it's mouth... I guess the bored looking clawing fire things make SOME sense on a dragon.

  • I know how ridiculous this scene is but its very unnerving for me. i get this horrible feeling in my stomach because of it (thats not a joke by the way).

  • its kinda strange that Ethel (Nancy Cartwright), who was eaten by a cartoon, would eventually become world famous as the voice of Bart Simpson!

  • ha ha thats just pathetic i'm 11 and i dident get scared at all!!! the whole time i was just thinking WTF? thats not scary at all!

  • yo duz anyone know if that was an actual cartoon? and if so wats the name?... its trippy as fuck hahah

  • Poor Nancy Cartwright. She really IS in cartoon hell (Bart Simpson.)

  • @TalkinXbox funny!

  • whats the name of this part of the movie and where can i see the whole part of this story thanks have a great day

  • @justin19822 It's "Twilight Zone: the Movie" from 1982 and this is from the third segment.

  • this is pretty scary!!!

  • Stupid movie.

  • Looks like a Mortal Kombat Animality

  • Sorry to post what is in all likelyhood a spammy comment, but am I the only one who finds it awesome that the "Cartoon Hell" segment was directed by a guy named Joe DANTE?

  • @TsunogaiDanshaku funny!

  • @TsunogaiDanshaku I was thinking that EXACTLY, even before I saw your comment.

  • @TsunogaiDanshaku - Actually, the cartoon itself was animated by Sally Cruikshank. If you like it, you should check out her cartoon "Don't Go In The Basement". Good stuff with music by Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo.

  • This scared the heck out of me when I was little. Been terrified of cartoon vore ever since. XD

  • OMG I'd so love to have that kind of power

  • I wonder who the animators were on that cartoon sequence?

  • Mark Kausler did most of the animation- I did a little bit of it. I designed and directed all the animation.

  • Really? well you both did an outstanding job on it,

parts of that toon remind me of some of the early 1930s pre Hays Code Max Fleischer and U.B. Werks cartoons, especially

    Max Fleischer's 'Swing You Sinners'.

  • @laughingsal, seriously? That cartoon scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. Seriously remembered that since then.

  • I don't know about you, if there was a hell I wouldn't be fond of going there...unless it's a Cartoon Hell. Like this. Looks freaking awesome to me!

And you, Sally, are awesome too along with the rest of the animators of this. This is such incredible work! Now I feel like seeing this movie...

  • Thanks, Eric. You should rent it. One of the episodes, directed by George Miller, is stunningly scary.

  • that would suck

  • I remember seeing this when I was, like, 8 years old and it scared the HELL out of me!!! It's creepy as hell! Almost makes suicidemouse.avi look like Maple Town...

  • Is this where the terrible movie, Terror Toons got the idea for their premise?

  • AWSOME!!!!

  • Imagine if she had an eraser... haha.

  • ha, good one.

  • @David0Schofield funny!

  • @David0Schofield RofllolmaoxD That made me aha ha =]

  • T-T-T-That's All!

  • This movie was on the other night, and I noticed something I hadn't before when I was watching this. Right before Anthony sends Ethel into the Cartoon Hell, as she's confronting him, the TV in the living room is playing a cartoon as usual. I may have to get the movie on DVD to confirm this, but the cartoon shown right before this looked like the Anita and Quasi cartoon, "Make Me Psychic." From what I could see, it was the scene where Snozz sings his love for Anita, dancing with the lamp.

  • I think you're right, I remember licensing something.

  • and she lives in the same town as me!

  • This scene alone gave me nightmares.

  • at least I wasn't serving salad!

  • Hmmm....reminds me of some of the vacations I had back in the 70's. LOL. Thanks for posting.

  • funny. I was thinking chicken drumstix when I read your screen name.

  • 0:31 -- Ha! It's the past life reading con artist from Quasi at the Quackadero!

  • definitely looks like him!

  • haha funny!

  • What did I tell you kids about watching Liquid Television this late at night? You're gonna get nightmares!

  • @SpamNapkin Good way to put it! They would run that show as early as 7PM I can recall.

  • i love you sally

  • This always scared the crap outta me.

  • What movie is this from? I wanna see it.

  • This is the "It's a Good Life" segment of the compilation movie, "Twilight Zone: the Movie". I think it's 1982.

  • twilight zone the movie!

  • Thanks. Yeah, I should have figured that out from all the comments about Twilight Zone the movie.

  • wtf are the trying to scare kids into not watchin cartoons are what holly carp and at the end when hes like th-thats all creepy

  • That's fucking disturbing.

  • i just saw this film that part just freaked me out

  • Thank you! It's amazing what I can remember as a kid - look it up on Youtube - there it is!

  • Comment removed

  • that cartoon was nothing the kids are watching these days... miss the old cartoon

  • lmao true say.

  • Th-th-that's all Ethel......the girl in the cartoon...is the actress who voices Bart Simpson by the way .....

  • Holy crap,

    brilliant.

  • You were the one who designed this part?

I remember it disturbed the **** outa me when I first saw this as a kid, haha

  • no refunds!

  • this little boy was wayyy too spoiled..had the whole family living in fear

  • Hey laughinsal, as an animator and animation designer myself I've always wondered.. was there a Yellow Submarine influence on this clip? There are details like the monster mouths and such that remind me of that film's detail.

  • Not so much other than it was the first animated film to use wild color. Until vhs and dvds were prevalent, Yellow Submarine wasnt seen after its initial release (which I did see as a teen.)

  • so the guy who posted this...animated it to???

  • not guy... gal...me. I designed and directed it, and still have many gorgeous cels from it, but it was produced at a regular animation house which Sam Cornell ran but I forget the name of the company now, and major talent Mark Kausler did the actual animation.

  • that's pretty bad ass...great job

  • that's like cartoon heaven for me

  • We've been expecting you.

  • that kinda sounded creepy coming from you *shivers*

  • Reminds me of Al Columbia comics. But Al was a kid when this was made!

  • Sal, is there anywhere/way we can purchase books, cels, or prints of your work? Do you have a website? I can't seem to find one.

  • John Muto did the animation for Forbidden Zone.

  • Living in the sixth dimension... moving in the wrong direction....

  • Wow! YOU animated this? I bought a bootleg DVD of Twilight Zone a long time ago before it was officially released, and I remember really liking this segment. You rock!

  • I designed and directed the animation. Mark Kausler was the actual animator. Glad you've enjoyed it.

  • You did an amazing work and i love this movie.. All of you artists who gaved life to this movie are an inspiration. Thanks !!

  • the internet is an amazing way to connect.

  • @laughingsal nice animation i watched this movie when i was 8 years old xD 11 years aggo the rabbit scene and the animation scared the hell out of me :P i study the 3d animation for a year now

  • Wow... now I =KNOW= I need to buy your stuff... did you have =any= input on "Forbidden Zone" or do you and Mr Elfman share some mad twisted engrams? ;)

Jeez - I wanna write a bunch of stuff, but we're so limited here.

Suffice to say, between Gene Dietch (early Sixties) Kim Dietch (mid-Seventies) and you (Showtime or maybe TMC, mid 80s) my childhood & young adulthood were weirdly influenced, in a GOOD way ;)

Thanks for putting your stuff on YouTube, blew me away :)

  • I didn't have anything to do with Forbidden Zone. Thanks for your nice comment.

  • whats the episode called when the little boy has his mouth sewn up and hes watching a cartoon on the tv?

  • That was awsome!

  • I'm amazed how sharp your eyes are, and others like you, who can pick out my style even while going back over childhood memories.

Yellow Subarine was before my time. I remember seeing the animation cels for sale at B. Altman's for $25 each.

  • I was wondering where I had seen the animation style for the Anita the Duck cartoons before, and this was it. Did your crew also have a hand in "Yellow Submarine"? I also recognized the style from the early days of "Sesame Street", way back before it pretty much became "The Elmo Show."

  • I do not want to run into that kid.

  • Funny thing is, I ran into Kathryn, the good woman in the episode, at the racetrack about a week ago. I didn't speak to her though-- the connection seemed too tenuous.

  • omg omg omg i remember this!! wow

  • I'm glad they finally released this movie on DVD. By far one of the better stories in the film.

  • thanks.

  • That was sweet! And thanx for the vid info.

  • Maybe you should move!

  • I always felt sorry for her

  • freeeeaky!

  • Ah okay, I just wondered since she had your last name and she's an animator....

  • Given all the Simpsons connections -animating a Danny Elfman song, creating the monsters who chase Nancy Cartwright- might you happen the be the mother of Madelaine Cruikshanks, who worked on the Simpsons Movie?

  • No, i don't know who that is, narozzz.

  • wow, that is really spooky

  • tha-tha-tha thats all ethall

  • The best point in the entire movie.

  • Too good.

  • one of my favorites

  • this episode used to scare the shyt outa me n the airplane one

  • "You did a real good thing, Sally, a REAL good thing!"

    Sorry, couldn't resist!

  • What does that girl scream while she's being chased? For a split sec while it's showing the family's reaction you can her say something from the TV screen.

  • Aaah, help!

She also may or may not be crying a little.

  • It's not the cartoon world that's destroying her, it's the BOY'S WORLD that's destroying her. He wanted her dead, and he got his wish.

  • I'm gonna buy it if it comes out in the uk!
